Equinox Observations -Good to Odd

All the captian's are out and about during the sailing.  They do not spend 100% of their time "driving" the ship.  They have a full staff and ES the captain is the final responsible one for decisions, but all of them are walking about, having dinner, talking to guests, and at times playing games, dancing and living.

I agree that the Captain of the vessel needs to maintain a professional relationship with the passengers. I have always found it strange how people talk about her as if she’s a personal friend. The fact that she is selling her own personal line of jewelry just leaves me almost speechless. How can that be allowed to happen?

hawking her jewelry?   man that's bad

Wow, did not know that. Selling the jewelry on the ship? When we had a chance to talk to her, she does come off as a long time friend. Always with a nice smile. Never is in any hurry. Always professional. Came to every show in the theater. I asked a question on why the ship left port and then did a 360 degree turn. She promptly showed me pictures on her iphone and explained it in detail. Guess she like the question. She is one captain I must say, is completely different from all the others I have ever met. A wonderful outgoing person. I certainly wish her all the very best in her future accomplishments.

Do you think it compromises her ability in terms of safety to her crew or passengers?  If Celebrity believed that this was in any way negatively impacting any voyage, they.wouldn't allow it.

I wasn't even aware that Celebrity had a female captain.  Good for them.  That profession is one lacking in diversity and inclusion  and if she can bring some positive attention to that, good for her and Celebrity as long as it does not impact safety of the ship.

Other cruise lines also have female captains. Took her 19 years before becoming a captain. I can only imagine how tough it probably was with competing with men side by side. I mention this before. I actually saw her using the joy stick when docking. No tugs were needed.

Folks, go back and read post #15.  It's not her own personal line of jewelry.  It's just one that Celebrity carries in their shop called "Captain's Collection".  I have seen many officers, including captains, doing this on other lines with other products.  I for one am greatly disappointed that we won't get to meet this lovely person on our cruise in Aug.

Not so good: Deck 9 concierge cabin- musty smelling pillows, bathroom door sprung, rusted fridge, frayed carpet in passageway...hard to believe things like this were not addressed during refurb. Room Steward brought different pillows, no smell, but they were brutal to sleep with. The bed was good size but really firm, probably needs broken in.

For the price you pay for that room, that would have upset me. Not just the condition of the room (bad), but I have allergies and one is musty areas depending on how bad. Sleeping on a musty pillow one night could set me back a couple of days at least.

But like you, we would have made the best of it. I'm glad you still had a great time.

Found this in Forbes.com.  There is also an interview on Cruise Critic where they refer to Kate as an influencer, especially on social media. Celebrity seems to be using her influence as a brand spokesperson, which is already enhanced by her being a captain.  It makes perfect sense for Celebrity to expand her profile.  Great for her and the company, although there certainly is some backlash on this forum that I have a tough time understanding.   Carnival deployed a similar strategy several years ago with John Heald.

Women Product Designers: Throughout the retail spaces on Edge, women are showcased, from fragrance designer Jo Malone to clothing designer Melissa Odabash to jewelry designer Kallati, who created a selection of Edge-inspired jewelry. "We have digital signage for some of our shops, and one of the digital signs that rotates through is called 'Women with an Edge,' and it's all the women that are part of our retail experience," says Lutoff-Perlo. "We've partnered with a lot of women who, historically, have not been part of our brand because we believe that they are the future, they are very modern luxury, they are brands that are up-and-coming."

Has anyone stayed in cabin 1589 on deck 11? If so, was it renovated as shown on the X website?

Good news. Sounds like they are getting the ones done they couldn't get to while in dry dock.

The cabin we had on the Reflection was same as this one but an OV cabin. We booked the room nest to it on the Equinox. Bed near the window. We liked it a lot better. With a balcony I think I would like the one you are showing better. Much better for a balcony cabin.

One of her up and coming  " female" brands was the  non Spring water in metal btls that tasted awful..Hope that will be gone soon.

LLP should focus on  traditional gift items on EDGE...like a   tee shirt for less than $95 , and dump the whole aisle of Malala stuff.  We could not get a postcard of EDGE or our ports,  or any gift of any kind  for our grandson !

We did buy one of the EDGE jewelry pieces...the prism.  I love it but  bought it in a shop onboard not  froma ship's officer. I admit I  had fun showing it off to some of the women Officers....one of whom shared my same  b day..and had the other style EDGE necklace but that' s all.

Pains me greatly when I see  a  ship's Master involved with jewelry or handbag shop reveals,  or  worse picking  the tickets out of a hat!   But I guess  many passengers think its cool.

You did not mention the milk-type  cartons of water being served to passengers. It was interesting to try to get the square bottoms into the round holes in the arms at the Theater.  I wonder what happened to the water cartons.

Have they completely done away with water bottles even for the premium beverage package?

There are plastic water bottles available for both the Classic and Premium packages.  Our cruise received the cartons for the Classic package but apparently did not last long.

I think they are trying to move to less plastic, hence the water cartons instead of bottles. We had the premium package and had Evian bottles provided to us.

I was on the 6/29 sailing as well - it was awesome!! Probably one of my favorite cruises even though it had my least favorite ports.  The crew were all so friendly and engaging.  I have never seen such visible senior officers - and they kept asking if we were enjoying our trip/experience and seemed to really want feedback. Loved the cruise director, Marten.  He seemed to be everywhere.  I have never been one to really care who the officers/cruise directors were on a ship... after this experience I can see why people ask.  This is the first time my husband and I have had so much interaction/connection with them and it really made an impact with us.

Our Cruise Connections meet and greet was fun - we enjoyed meeting and speaking with other CC people 🙂  And the Captain stressed how importantly they view this board and our input/thoughts.

This was hands down my favorite Celebrity Cruise.

Disappointed hear that musty pillows are still in cabins and threadbare carpets...thought that those issue would have been addressed in drydock (carpet) and the musty "new" pillows would be gone this many weeks into "post dry dock" sailing

The jewelry thing re Captn Kate is unprofessional and sexist.

Are the men selling watches? cufflinks?

She is a Captn of a vessel and the oddness of the fan pages on Fb, pics of the ugly furless cat and the jewelry hawking is tacky

Agree on the staff and overall experience. We did an 11 night Southern Caribbean last November and had such a great time we are doing the exact cruise itinerary this coming October.

History will indicate first and last night are typically not sold out, hence the discount to persuade guests. I will say there were empty chairs each time I attended.  However, there is no guarantee.

There were only 13 of us in the first seating while in port, second seating, I was told by waiter they expected 50.

If she comes out with a mens line of fragrance and or some nice watches I'm game....

Keep it classy. No need to attack a harmless (and adorable) animal. I'm sailing on August 3rd and am now quite interested in seeing the jewelry that has a few of you so riled up.

Let's get back to these free drinks in the casino.  So Bud Light is included.  What else?  Any mixed drinks?  This is great news as we are cruising on a resident rate so no free perks for us.  Wow.  Cruise ship casinos finally catching up to land based ones.  'Bout time. 😎

Sorry Bud Light is NOT included....only regular Budweiser. I believe it will be the same as what is offered at the Elite lounge drink menu.  Just the basics.

The pillow thing was really weird. It seems they are definitely new but must have been stored in some kind of a stinky container. You cant really smell it until you compress the pillow and the waft of weird smell fills your nostrils. The pillows I received as replacements were not new.

I don't see anyone riled up in this thread....as for me...like I said it was "odd". Almost 100 cruises completed and I have NEVER seen a Captain selling anything period. As for the actual jewelry...bring your wallet....the cheapest piece was five (5) thousand dollars.  The Captain has a great sense of humor...she left our cruise the day prior and before she left she introduced in the officer party her replacement. While she was in the middle of stating who it was, the cruise director stepped forward and she said that was't going to happen and as a matter of fact he was so low on the list that "the cat" was in line ahead of him. lol......
