Tell me more about the Red Frog Pub

Going on Carnival cruise #7 shortly, and there is one thing that has eluded my cruises each time so far, the Red Frog Pub. I will be on the Valor, which has one. I've heard good things about it, mostly around the paid appetizers and games. What else can you tell me about it? Are there any good exclusive events in there? When is a good time to go?

Most of them have live entertainment most evenings... some also host karaoke... we find them a bit noisy during prime time, so we'll often go outside and sit (for the ships that have outdoor seating in this area) and enjoy the quiet and the scenery!

On the Breeze they held karaoke there. They also had a couple of TV’s behind the bar that they played college football on. This was in October. They put a couple of chafing dishes in the evening out in the front that had chicken fingers and I’m not sure what else in them. They have spiced dried pigeon peas behind the bar for free that go great with beer and the paid wings and coconut shrimp were very good. Enjoy!

On the Miracle, they held 50% off drink specials on most cocktails a couple of days during our cruise.  It turned out it wasn't 50% off the price...it was double the size of the drink for the same price!  We were served our drinks in a pitcher with a big straw for the same price as a glass!

Never have seen "paid appetizers".  OK place though.

Not all ships sell appetizers in the Red Frog Pub.  Only the Breeze, Magic, Vista, Horizon, and maybe Sunshine.  Other ships have only drinks and pigeon peas.  Reason being the sanitation rules regarding transporting of food, since the Red Frog Pub on other ships was added on after the fact, rather than built from the get-go, so the physical space it's in wasn't originally set up as a food venue.

We're on the Sunrise 9/16 and wondering how you know when they are offering this special.  Is it listed on the Activity sheet or is it posted somewhere within the Red From Pub?  Thanks for info.

There was a sign on the lido deck near the buffet/elevator area coming back after our port of call with offers. Some ships have 50% off in Red Frog Pub, others at the Casino bar.

I must admit I haven't spent much time in Red Frog on my Carnival sailings.  No specific reason why we haven't however. Might give it a try next month on our next cruise.

I vaguely remember there being a house been offered there, perhaps on tap?

There are several.  The Thirsty Frog Caribbean Wheat is pretty darn good, but the rest were just, eh, ok.

Their fish bowl thing is a must if you are a drinker.  You can even take the drink and bring back the bowl later.  On one of our port days when it was raining, we ended up in there with a bunch of other Havana guests (it was raining so went there instead of Havana pool) and we all did their port day happy hour. The drinks were great and cheap!

I've been there several times on Valor. They have a beer pong contest that's fun,, and it's cheap enough considering how much beer you get to drink.

They have a foosball table and another tabletop game, the one where you slide the things to the other side (sorry about the description) and also a beam bag game you can get out. They have a stack of board games too.

The atmosphere is pub like, usually the band's rotate through there so each night may or may need t be different.

The only food I know of is the fried plantain slices, which are free.

Try it, if you like it stay. If not, take a right when you leave and head right down to the alchemy or piano bar.

This was the port day happy hour. When we were on the Miracle we would hustle back on the ship from port to grab a pitcher or two. Quite the good deal. We loved the Red Frog on the Miracle.

The food menu is only available at Red Frog Pubs on Magic, Breeze, Vista, and Horizon.  Everything else is the same.

We have found the last few years, that families have taken over the Red Frog Pub during daytime.  Maybe after dinner it becomes a real pub atmosphere.

True that.  On the Legend, they even brought their kids to the Red Frog for karaoke.  And I mean little kids, too, like 8-10.  Not teenagers.  I certainly think there are much better places for kids to be than singing karaoke in a bar...

Its not just on cruises..... for my DH birthday a few weeks ago, we went to a local brew pub for lunch and discovered lunchtime on Saturdays is now "family day" at the beerhouse.  No kidding, families, high chairs, coloring books and toddlers running around inside the bar.  It was not my kind of celebration for DH, ruined it for me when people at next booth had kids climbing in and out of their booth and over to ours the whole time.  It is the way it is nowadays.  I am not an old fuddyduddy, but I don't think kids belong in bars where the main thing is drinking beer.  Atmosphere was wrong...

You're right, it's a total culture shift.  For instance 25 years ago I would hang out in dive bars in Key West with nary a kid in sight.  Nowadays we call Key West "Disney World South" because there are so many kids in the bars during the day.
