i have offered no speculation.

 

everything i have stated is available in accredited news outlets.

 

countries have literally quarantined entire cities or population centers.  education is not panic.

 

the state department literally stated to avoid cruising, especially people with underlying health issues.  this is not my opinion or speculation.

Grand Princess has 21 cases...they only tested 45 people out of 3,500 onboard by flying test kits to the ship last week.  The ship will dock today and all guests onboard will go to 14-30 day quarantine at military bases

The difference is if something were to happen at a theme park, you can go home. On a cruise ship, you have a risk of being confined in your stateroom for an undetermined amount of time. Or the ship gets diverted because a port of call closed.

There was a comment about being ok with sailing without people over 60, then someone else commented on that basically saying it was nasty. My comment is that someone saying they don't want to cruise with elderly people is no different then someone saying they don't want to cruise with children.

He's not saying 'adult only' cruise, he's specifying an age group. There are many threads discussing that 60 and over are more susceptible to the virus. As one poster said,  'I got an article in my iphone news feed this morning that the CDC has warned US citizens over 60 not to frequent crowded places and not to fly.' So yes, I think the 'cruising with no one over 60' comment was a bit rude. 

 

People are posting over and over that the virus only affects 'older people' and people with 'underlying disabilities'.  They are marginalizing these groups of people. They're not disposable.

60 is not elderly.  I just turned 60 and am in good health, no underlying health issues.  I recovered from the flu in early Jan in 5 days without tamiflu.   I am currently dealing with a knee issue after I dislocated it and broke my ankle in Aug.  My ankle healed at the same rate as a 40 year olds.  Saying it's no different than saying someone doesn't want to cruise with children is not the same thing at all, but you can have your opinion.

Caribbean Princess was heading to Miami after being at Grand Cayman where they had to medivak two passengers off ship had to turn around and now is on her way back to Grand Cayman for a second medivak according to a tweet from a onboard passenger.

No they aren't marginalizing anyone. It's stated in an attempt to gain perspective. Just like the regular flu the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk. Given that people are panicking and getting into fights over toilet paper I think it's a good idea to point out those that are more at risk.

 

And no where did anyone say those groups of people are disposable. Don't create drama where none exists.

We have a Mediterranean cruise on Rhapsody OTS May 2nd. Not looking good for our 3 ports in Italy, but I'm hanging in there until the last minute.

We're on the May 17 Allure sailing and this recently changed note from RC has me wondering about the 3 Italy ports (last week the note only mentioned northern Italy). Although to be slightly pedantic, their usage of the word "and" instead of "or" would mean you could visit half the mentioned areas and still board, the way I read it.

 

Until further notice, ships in the Royal Caribbean International fleet will adopt the following health screening protocols:

1. Regardless of nationality, we will deny boarding to:

a.  Any guest who has traveled from, to, or through mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iran, South Korea, and Italy in the past 15 days.

b. Any guest who has come in contact with anyone with 15-day prior travel to mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iran, South Korea, and Italy. The CDC characterizes contact with an individual as coming within six feet (2M) of a person.

My first post on this thread I said I was mildly concerned about our upcoming cruise at the end of May from Seattle to Alaska.  I think it's time to move to the moderately concerned stage.  So much has happened since then.  The facts not media hype as I see it are:  Several cruises on multiple lines have been disrupted or cancelled, 14 day passenger quarantines have occurred, cruise ships have been denied port entries, the State department has issued a travel advisory, entire areas of countries have gone on lock down, schools and countless large scale gatherings have been cancelled, some leaders in Washington State (where our next cruise departs from) have suggested locking down parts of the state, and the economy is being impacted in a negative way.  These are actual events that have or are happening now.  I don't think this is fear mongering, I'm just responding to what we see, and of course the media will report on these events in a way to create some hysteria.  But despite the way the media reports, they are still realities.  I'm not on social media I can only imagine how that's going, I read these threads on CC and try and gather information as well but even this site is full of misinformation and hostile responses if the poster doesn't agree with your opinion.

 

Again I'm thankful to have the option of receiving a FCC if we decide at the time to cancel due to the risks that have been debated for the past week.  Those that choose to cruise or don't cruise is a personal choice and what ever decision you make I truly hope it works out for your situation.  There have already been a couple of cases where people who were supposed to be in self quarantine have broken that and went to public events.  How many cruisers will lie about their contact with someone who has the virus, their travel history or how they are feeling and try and board?  I'm hopeful most would be honest but realistically human behavior tells me differently.  It's hard to think about cancelling but that's a response based on the fact that we've been so looking forward to our first Alaska experience, the anticipation the planning etc.  This will pass, just a lot of unknowns so we'll wait and see and make a decision  closer to the sailing.

The last part of your statement is exactly what I have been thinking the most about within the past 24 hours.  Add that to the Muster Drill where you're inches away from each other, is it really worth the risk right now?

 

While the temperature checks and questions are conducted before boarding, it still has huge flaws.

 

My wife and I are heavily leaning towards canceling our March 30 cruise aboard Mariner of the Seas.

 

With other responsibilities that need to be attended to after the cruise, we can't afford to be locked down for 14 or more days away from home !

We are scheduled to sail from Miami on March 21st.  My son and son-in-law live near San Francisco, so they are already practicing safe behavior because of the community spread in their area.  My daughter and I will be flying from Virginia to join up with them on the 20th.  We had a 4-way conference call an hour ago.  After discussing all the pros and cons, we have all agreed to continue with our cruise plans -- unless something catastrophic happens in the next week.

Just got our refund from RC for the key.  We did not make final payment so just waiting for our deposit  of $200 as a next cruise certificate. Amtrak is also refunding our tickets from DC to New Jersey.  I will miss not cruising this summer but had to cancel because of health problems. Although people recover  Corns virus we don’t know the long term effects. People use to think chicken pox was just a childhood quick illness. But now we have to worry about shingles.  Viruses are more difficult to deal with.
