Do you think as many Aussies will make trips overseas?

Recommended Posts

I am still bummed about cutting our Japan trip😔. It was our last day in Taiwan when I read about Australia upgrading the Do Not Travel and then of course came Qantas annoucing the cancelling of flights. Our three week exploration of mainland Japan turned into a 6 day mad scramble😱 to get some sights in. When we were first planning our Japan and Taiwan trip we were debating about going in Spring or Autumn and it seems we were lucky to choose Spring as by the looks of thing there won't be an opportunity for international travel till next year so I'm still pretty grateful we got to explore something 😃which is always better than nothing and bonus we managed to use up all the pre paid items so we didn't have to deal with any refund process😜.

We would have just arrived in Rome if it wasn't for this blasted virus. Four nights there, 26 nights on a cruise, and another four nights in the UK. What a bummer!

I feel for you. We would be heading off shortly for our 16 night Norwegian Fjord cruise on the Island Princess .......Oh how I wish we were still doing that.

I can understand your disappointment.  We did a Norwegian Fjord cruise on Hurtigruten at the end of May and it was a beautiful time of year to enjoy the spectacular scenery.

1 million Aussies live permanently abroad.  More than 11 million trips overseas were taken by Aussies in 2019.

ABC News

Thinking about future travel, as always.

  • What do you think about overseas travel, in the future?
  • Do you have a desire to see more of Australia, after the long drought and devastating bushfires and corona virus lockdown?
  • Will finances effect your decision, e.g. poorer investment returns, weak Aussie dollar.
  • If there is no vaccine, by 2021, will that effect your overseas travel decisions, from 2021?
  • Would you travel to NZ as part of NZ/Aus bubble?

Thought I would answer the OP's questions....

- It will never be the same, unless a vaccine is discovered. Flying will be a whole differant ballgame.

- Most definitely. My wife and I have always said we would travel the world whilst we were fit and well enough to do it, then concentrate on local travel as we get older and more "restricted".

- Unfortunately, yes it will effect our decision.

- Yes. No travel for us.

- Yes.

Even before all this happened, I was starting to realise that I was booking trips which were too long and involved and that I was booking them too far ahead. At 73yo, even though I am fit and overall healthy, unusual health conditions  have been starting to come up unexpectedly (lost an eye last year) and this year all of a sudden , my Doctor suspected that I may have colonic cancer ( which proved to be false) - BUT this "scare " happened just when I was due to pay $20,000 final payment to Cunard after already having committed $6000. Decided to take a gamble and commit - and then 3 weeks later this thing called coronavirus came along. Decades ago , overseas travel was enjoyable for me - then over the past decade or so it became less enjoyable because of Worldwide mass tourism - and I am thinking that perhaps it is now going to get even less enjoyable. Can't really imagine an enjoyable cruise now- social distancing in the theatre, bars, restaurants, tender boats, etc ?????

Read the startup plans of one European cruiseline. Amongst many other changes, mouth and nose coverings will also be required in all public areas (not sure how that will work with dining).

Other countries are used to it, but it does make for a less pleasant, relaxation experience to be sure... And I think those photographers will be out of a job.

That is ludicrous. Having to put the mask on/off up/down while eating and drinking renders it completely useless!

That’s what makes me feel there will be an initial rush at very low prices which will fill the ships ,but then the public will start to back off once they realise what they are in for .

But I doubt if we will see FULL ships ..numbers will have to be reduced , inside cabins left empty for example

What difference will leaving the inside cabins empty make other to the  poor people that could be potentially quarantined In them.

Who wants to stay in a windowless box on a floating Petrie Dish ???

Thats what joe public will ask  . leaving inside cabins empty will reduce the number of passengers on a ship thus helping with social distancing

So you are expecting ships will only sail with their balcony passengers, don't think so.

Can't see how it will help with social distancing at all, as we all know only takes one person.

It’s not only passengers who will need social distancing ....it is the crew as well .

The idea I heard was that the public would have every second cabin OV and Balcony and the Insides world be used by the crew . That would mean  that under the new normal ships would be sailing 1/2 full.

I saw one video on YouTube this week where they claimed that RCCL had claimed they only need their ships 1/3 full to break even .

I saw a report where RC said that they will focus on the larger ships as it is viable to sail at 1/3 capacity, whereas the smaller ships would need 50% to be viable.

I doubt that they would allow crew and passengers to be accommodated on the same deck. Might lead to some hanky-panky?

Perhaps , but I think after all they have been through crew members would dare not break the rules . On some ships  the crew are on the same deck as passengers . Eg entertainment ,shop, casino staff etc . It’s more to give them single accom.  QM2 was built so that most crew had their own room .

I would think that David meant the staff he mentioned would be sleeping on the same deck as passengers. Is that a problem?

I thought that would be a good idea, as demand for inside cabins would be low for passengers and it would help protect the staff and some crew from overcrowding.

See post #67.

Hanky panky? Sorry I can't stop smiling at the thought of the more elderly passengers (particularly on Princess) hanky panking with the younger singers and dancers (entertainers) whom David mentioned. 😂
