How About a Cruise With No Ports for Safety

The kind of people who do this are the kind that breath.   Simply breathing expels aerosolized saliva into the air.

Depending on conditions (and the study) these droplets can remain airborne for a while ... like up to 10 minutes.

So, the person walking 6+ feet behind you gets to enjoy them.

I agree with you completely ... anyone who is not breathing does not require a mask!

Perhaps you can quote the research that shows how droplets can remain airborne for 10 minutes in an outside, as opposed to laboratory,  environment?

You also have not taken into account the viral load factor.

If your "facts" were true, the R number would be around 20!

I'm not disputing that the use of masks can be useful, but giving out erroneous facts weakens rather than strengthens your case.

Currently the masks, bandanas, cloth coverings, etc  that non-medical folks wear do little to protect

the wearer, and (hopefully) more to protect others.

In my opinion, not wearing a mask is rather disrespectful of others.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion.  Base it on facts, not feelings, though.

From the CDC: "There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza."  Granted, that's for the flu and disposable masks; doubtful that anyone wants to volunteer for a CCP trial.

From the National Institute of Health: "This study is the first RCT of cloth masks, and the results caution against the use of cloth masks. This is an important finding to inform occupational health and safety. Moisture retention, reuse of cloth masks and poor filtration may result in increased risk of infection... Penetration of cloth masks by particles was almost 97% and medical masks 44%... Moisture retention, reuse of cloth masks and poor filtration may result in increased risk of infection."

If you do decide to wear a mask, make sure it's a medical mask and not a cloth one.  Medical masks do provide some measure of protection.  That's not what's being touted, though.  A cloth mask is far worse than no mask.

In my opinion, coughing or sneezing on people is rather disrespectful of others.

I think you meant 'respect to others' on your bottom line ... but point received.  I think the reason nobody got those in the start is so that healthcare workers could have an adequate supply of these N95s.

I think the intent of an exhalation valve is for use in like a factory, where breathing in is important,

while breathing out is not.

Sure ... where do you suggest I buy one?

Not sure what the other person means by a medical mask. If they mean what many call a surgical mask, the disposable type that are not N95, they are available now at pharmacies and Walmart’s. The other person is wrong about cloth masks like they are wrong about most of what they post. Cloth masks are okay. The reason I use the disposable masks is that they have a bendable nose. As I wear glasses if I bend it right my glasses don’t steam up.

Thank you for that information.

When the other poster referred to a medical mask, I assumed they meant an N95, NIOSH rated disposable respirator.

I wish to purchase to protect myself an my family, but have been unable to.

Such a mask would protect ME against others actions.

Pretty much the N95 is still only available around here to medical workers. I would want to wear one of those on a flight. I can get a few but I won’t take them until I have a flight while they are still in short supply. Hopefully by the next time I am getting on a plane the shortage of N95s will be over.

What is your opinion regarding the use of a face shield instead of a mask?

There seems to be split opinion about face shields instead of masks. Perhaps there will be more clarity in the future. Medical workers that use the shields in a medical situation are using the shields with a mask underneath. In my opinion the shields are probably as effective as cloth masks or the disposable non N95 masks for non medical use but in my county the mask mandate specifically does not allow face shields without masks as an indoor face cover. That possibly and probably is not the case in all states/counties/cities. Some may allow the shields as a face covering.

there are surgical masks which are not not that are disposable. the  rectangular flat foldable kind.

there are also n95 masks that are also disposable. Actually most n95 masks in use were intended to be thrown away after each patient, to make sure another patient was not infected. If course this was pre covid. when relatively few were used. That went out the window pretty quickly when medical facilities went through what was normally a weekday or more supply in a single day. so it went from one mask per patient to one per day, to one for multiple days due to shortages. New methods were developed to sanitize the formerly disposable n95 masks.

Check you stats again...I think they have been revised.

I have always called those flat masks surgical masks but most places selling them currently are not calling them surgical masks anymore. Just 3 ply masks or something like that. They come in boxes of 50 or lots of 10 each.

The rationale in our states face covering order is that the shields are an added measure and not to be used instead of masks is that the shields don’t filter air.

“Plastic shields, typically worn only in health care settings, do not take the place of a face covering. They are worn as an added measure to protect one's eyes and don't filter air.”

not sure how the typo "not not" got inserted.

I meant to say which are disposable, the flat rectangular kind.

the fun of typing on cell phone.

Good for you.  What you think may be much different from what others think.  Enjoy yourself.

Thank you, I will.

As to what I think ... I think folks should wear masks when they are unable to distance from others,

or in their own homes, etc.

I'm hardly alone in thinking this.

It's reassuring that you called my comments 'ignorant'.

I knew what you meant. That it was a typo. I make typos on my phone too.

Thinking more about the subject I think on an airplane I might wear a face shield in addition to a mask. Since in my local area people are complying and wearing masks inside and social distancing I would I don’t see the need to wear a shield in addition here. The N95 is still in short supply so a shield in addition to a mask might be a good idea on a plane. Luckily though I have no need to fly anywhere soon.

one infectious disease specialist (studying COVID) caught COVID. He was pretty sure that it was on a flight (prior to the mask on plane requirement). He wore n95, but left his eyes uncovered. That is what he thought was the infection path.

That's exactly what I was thinking about when I started this thread about a cruise without ports. Carnival must have taken my idea and implemented it, don't ya think ??!!!

Not sure where in the Pacific Northwest you are from, hopefully I will not encounter you. If you think a mask is uncomfortable, try a respirator

Currently, in the US, "medical masks", or if you prefer "NIOSH approved N95 disposable respirators", are only available to first responders, and medical folks.

(Giving them to the highest risk folks first makes complete sense)

So, why suggest that people make sure (to paraphrase) "if you wear a mask, wear a medical mask"?

Far, far better for people to simply get vaccinated for the disease.

And, equally impossible at this time.

Please do wear a mask if you're the sort of person to sneeze or cough on others!  I'm not.

So, do you believe that every person who has contracted covid-19 was coughed or sneezed on by another?
