We liked Marseille too. The only drawback was we needed a shuttle as it wasn't a walkable distance from the ship. Lovely harbour with all the cafés and bars to sit and dream about which yacht we wanted😆

Has to be Monte Carlo for us.  We sailed on the Azura and as we were the only cruise ship in we didn't need a tender. The most spectacular place to see how the other half live, so to speak. We were there a week before the grand prix and walking past all the F1 lorries and workshops was absolutely amazing. The shops, The casino and the hotel all amazing, and my proudest moment was that we bought a diet coke from Mcdonalds in Monte Carlo...does it get any better than that?

Funny you should say that. We had to cancel the cruise we had booked for later this year that included Monte Carlo  - but I'd already worked out that the McDonald's overlooking the harbour would be the only place we could afford to eat at!

 

The one on the Champs-Élysées in Paris was a treat too when that first opened.  Coffee on the Champs-Élysées before that was just a pipe dream.

Thanks - no pager was a bit harsh. We like Arecife,  and normally visit every time we go to Lanzarote.  We enjoy the fact that it is a proper working town,  with little concession to the tourist trade. I even get the chance to practice my Spanish.

Fair enough, we are all different, I was quite surprised that so many disagreed with me about Gibraltar on the other thread, but anyway that's a different point.

 

It's probably worth saying that I have had the opportunity to visit the Lanzarote volcanoes on non cruise holidays, and yes more enjoyable an experience was had then.  Also, that my perceptions of the place may be worsened by the fact that on each of my P&O calls at Arrecife, it has been a Sunday.

 

If my next cruise does on the off chance go, then my tour of the Canary Islands does include another opportunity for me to change my mind (or not 🤣)!

 

Of the Canaries, personally I prefer Madeira, La Palma, and Fuerteventura, probably in that order😃

To be fair, Arrecife on a Sunday would be a bit dire. Ideal day to hire a car and drive to Playa Blanca, the best resort on the island.

And here's me thinking the cruise ships didn't  go there for an entirely different reason. Something water related?? Then again geography was never a favourite of mine.😆

We love Monte Carlo as well, and also Villefranche sure mer,  between Monte and Nice. Tiny place, one Street and an old fort, but a lovely spot to spend a few hours.

Also love Cadiz and Madeira, and Ajaccio is very nice.

My wife's favourite is Cadiz (she loves going for lunch at La Marea https://www.lamarea.es/ )

 

My son's favourite is Civitavecchia (he likes pizza at Mastro Titta http://www.mastrotittapizza.com/  then swimming at the lido).

We like Villefranche too but to make more of a day of it, the gardens at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild are beautiful with stunning views over the bay.  It's on Cap Ferrat and we walked there but there is a bus  - useful for the outward journey (it drops you near the gates) as it's uphill but a much easier walk back to Villefranche.

You can get a cheap train. Right to Monte Carlo, left to Nice. Don't forget to validate you ticket or le plod will get you.

A surprisingly beautiful port for us was Santander. 

We knew nothing about it before visiting, so got the hoho bus to explore. 

Our first stop was an absolutely stunning beach that led us through beautiful parkland with a bit of an open air sea life centre which was free to enter where we saw dolphins and penguins, before continuing down to the Palace which was built for Queen Victoria's Granddaughter. 

Beautiful grounds, stunning position on the headland and immaculately kept with clean toilets and nice cafe. 

A great place to spend a few hours if you visit.
