Horizon chaser 1957 Posted October 27, 2020 #29 Share Posted October 27, 2020 Good morning, all! Good group of days, and enjoy the quote. I think I prefer Roy’s meal suggestion today, although the cupboard says otherwise. @TiogaCruiser, my prayers are with you. Hoping the fires pass by far from you and your home.

We are having the cooler days of fall here, but we still have the Santa Ana winds, and they are driving 2 large local fires. DH’s work let them leave at noon yesterday and we are doubting they will open today as the evacuation zone currently ends on the other side of the street. We’re just a quarter mile from an evacuation zone. Most of our town is under orders. For the moment the winds are light, so hopefully they can get air support up. Humidity was 2-5%- yesterday. Not sure what it is today but skin sure is itchy. The 2 fires are in a long corridor of wilderness that goes through multiple counties. It holds much of our prime hiking/ biking trails, wildlife habitats. I am fairly certain the local weather folk would announce “the end of the world”, if my humidity was that low! Stay safe!
Cruising-along Posted October 27, 2020 #31 Share Posted October 27, 2020 Good morning all and Go Navy! Great collection of days, and the wine sounds good too. I'm thinking pizza tonight... I've had only 1 black cat, he found us (all but one of our cats found us) 😉 and lived to be 17, died in 1999. Here's Ebony.
Overhead Fred Posted October 27, 2020 #32 Share Posted October 27, 2020 The swans were out front again this morning. But by the time I could get my camera and walk over to the lake, they decided they preferred the other shore and were out of range. I will keep trying... I did scare up some ducks and discovered a loon in the middle of the lake!

CrabbyPatti Posted October 27, 2020 #35 Share Posted October 27, 2020 Good Morning All, We can relate here to the Black Cat Day! Miss Princess is a long haired shiny black with just a small patch of white on her chest. She showed up in the middle of a snowstorm 3 years ago, as starving thin kitten............she knew a good door to come too, she stayed! We have been looking back at our travel pictures as a year ago we did some road trips and had planned to do a cruise and couple of road trips..............but Covid happened so now we are reminiscing on our past cruises and road trips. Nice fall day here, will be chasing the grands outside after lunch for some exercise (we have 3 acres so plenty of area for the boys to run and roam, with contact with just our family bubble!) Stay safe I hope all are well.

Rare rafinmd Posted October 27, 2020 #37 Share Posted October 27, 2020 When I last posted on my 2003 trip I said that the routine with MircCorp was that each time I boarded a train the guide had my ticket and escorted me to the train. The exception was Helsinki, where a letter was waiting at the front desk of my hotel when I disembarked the Gabriella. Today there are high speed trains that run between Helsinki and St. Petersburg in about 3 hours. In 2003 the trains were conventional, and there was a Russian Train and a Finnish train. I was booked on the Finnish train, the Sibelius Sibelius left Helsinki at 7:42 and arrived in St. Petersburg at 2PM. Sibelius was divided into 4-person compartments, and I don’t remember any of the other people in the compartment speaking English. Along the way we passed an old steam locomotive sitting on a siding. We stopped only briefly at the border. A few minutes an agent entered our compartment. He collected out passports and left. I was quite anxious until he returned 20-30 minutes later and returned our documents with a stamp on my Visa. When we arrived in St. Petersburg Olga was waiting as expected next to the locomotive. One of the first things she did was take a photo of me in front on one of the iconic monuments. We had a short scenic drive around St. Petersburg and made a couple of brief stops. My hotel in St. Petersburg was huge. “Subject: Hello from Russia Date: Thursday, April 10, 2003 11:32 AM I arrived in St. Petersburg yesterday afternoon. My Baltic sea crossing was very smooth, (unlike the North Sea) but there was a lot of ice. There was also a lot of snow on the sidewalks in Helsinki, but not much in St. Petersburg. My guide, Olga, took me to Pushkin to tour Tzarist palaces today, and there was a lot of snow and ice, possibly due to a higher elevation. I heard from my office today that one of my fellow employees was quarantined due to SARS (fortunately it worked out for the best, so it's everywhere, even in North America). St. Petersburg is a city of contrasts, historic and beautiful, with a lot of decay and restoration. I've started to gingerly move around on the Metro. Best wishes, Roy”

highland cruiser Posted October 27, 2020 #43 Share Posted October 27, 2020 Thanks for all the updates. I really like spaghetti squash...my DH not so much. But we do enjoy a good stuffed acorn squash and delicati squash boiled. Praying for those in the path of the California fires. So devastating and scary. Been a beautiful fall day here. Love all the colors. Stay safe, well, and wear your masks! Hugs to you all.

Rare TiogaCruiser Posted October 28, 2020 #46 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Thank you all for your concern about the fires. The winds have calmed here and the red flag warning was due to expire at 6:00p. The news and websites for the agencies working the respective fires are still saying 0 percent containment, but have not extended mandatory evacuations for several hours. Many people remain evacuated. They are setting backfires and clearing a lot of brush, and we’re able to get air support in. So am really surprised to see still no containment. Sadly, 2 members of a hand crew on one of the fires yesterday are in critical condition with burns. There has been a surprisingly large amount of charred leaves and charred wood pieces scattered throughout the neighborhood and local trails. We’re talking about 3 miles from the actual fire. This is a small branch that had healthy green and scorched leaves found locally. ( The black is scorched leaves and not shadow.) Most of the scorched leaves fell off when I picked it up. TIOGACRUISER!! I am sooo sorry to hear this as well as knowing the danger and possible evacuation that was present! I heard over 70k told to evacuate on the OC area! Was on the news tonight. That is why we have had a haze over the ocean. The winds were very strong yesterday and early this am, then the Santa Anna’s subsided this afternoon! Good bless you and stay safe! Thank you for the picture even makes is so surreal. Denise😊 1
