This could be a game changer along with the vaccine. A physician friend of mine said this was coming a couple of weeks ago, and now news outlets are reporting on it.

Why? Perhaps they will carry it onboard cruise ships in the medical bay and give it to people who test positive onboard a ship in the same way they give imodium plus to Noro sufferers? Or perhaps it will be available for purchase over the counter in some places UK for instance?

Because covid treatment is still overshadowed by the positive test. People panic when someone tests positive, but most people don't need treatment for other than OTC stuff.

But this is specific for Covid so perhaps you can forget about the OTC stuff. Lets assume that all cruises are vaccine only at first eventually moving to the stage where it is understood that most people have probably had the vaccine but they are willing to allow people who have not. Either way there might be very small outbreaks onboard. Lets assume it will work on Covid the same way  imodium works on Noro doing what it does in a couple of days. I can see it being used to lessen a person's Covid situation during the cruise.

Because (1) not everyone will be vaccinated; (2) the vaccines (especially the new J&J vaccine) only prevents you from getting moderately or severely sick when you catch the virus. The J&J vaccine is not measurably effective from preventing mild illness and only 66% effective in preventing moderate illness. And, while studies from Spain and Israel look good, there is still no evidence that when you catch the virus, you won't spread it while your body is fighting off the virus with the antibodies from Pfizer or Monderna vaccines. Dr. Fauci predicts that COVID will be an endemic for a while.

I've been saying this since this whole thing started. 

 

Just like the flu, there will be some new strain every year.  Just like the flu, there will be a new annual shot you can get every year - probably will be packaged right along with the annual flu shot.  Just like the flu, you can either get your shot or take your chances and get sick.  Just like the flu, if you're older, you probably want to get the shot, but if you're younger, you'll be fine either way.

There are several oral candidates being tested, and currently none of them are any further along than their phase one studies . It is a long way from phase one to final approval, and with the number of vaccines currently having EUA, the clinical trial process will most likely revert to the old slow slog model that the FDA and EMA are used to. So, I would not hold out any hope that a pill based vaccine will be on the market any time soon.

I've been listening. Great news, very few side effects, and seems to work. 

 

Buy merck stock lol is also my takeaway. Well joking, already have a little, but it sure cant hurt merck when it comes out in the fall. Starting last trial. Only issue is if this is as good as they say more people might not get vaccinated.

The NEW anti-viral will be full steam ahead with no limit to research hours or expense.

 

If it is a success it will be one of, if not the fastest approval for any drug in a long time...

 

With the number of fully vaccinated individuals growing by the tens of millions each week and a new EFFECTIVE and  SAFE 5 day therapy available the CDC will have to amend its Covid regulations and requirements in ALL aspects of society and business.

 

What reasons would keep cruising be on the naughty list of the C.D.C. or the various Port Cities if crew and passengers were vaccinated and the ship's doctor had a supply of the Anti-Viral drug ?

What reasons would keep the now vaccinated teachers at home. If you have the answer, you know why the cdc would keep cruises sidelined as long as they can. It's about power  not our safety.

Fair assessment if (and it is a big IF) it actually works. This candidate drug has only been tested on <200 symptomatic subjects, with no control group (often called an "open label" study). Until the candidate goes through the very rigorous and lengthy double-blind, placebo-controlled phase two and phase three clinical trials (presuming that Merck can actually round up the 20,000-30,000 volunteer participants that a P2/P3 clinical trial requires) and meets all of the necessary FDA-mandated end points, it remains to be seen whether it is either safe or unsafe, and whether it is either effective or ineffective.

I'm sure it would factor into their thinking but having an effective treatment in addition to effective vaccines is the best way to get us back to normal. If someone can take a pill for 5 days it would be more cost effective than a hospital stay in the ICU and the outlook would be greatly improved.

Dr. Fauci has changed his tune too many times throughout this whole ordeal. I no longer consider him to be a reliable source for information.
