Royal Caribbean’s “Tracelet” being used for cruises

It does but Celebrity will be paying a large fine to the state of Florida. I think $5000 per passenger to sail 100% vaccinated.

I suspect the average customer pays less that $5000 for a week long cruise. How does X think this is going to work out?

This just baffles my mind. There must be some kind of loophole that we don't know about. I never paid more than $3000 for a Celebrity cruise and that was Concierge class with a drink package, $300 on board spend and paid gratuities. I realize that prices have gone up but they haven't gone up that much.

I don't see this as an issue, in fact I think it will be the standard way to "get around" the ban. Cruise lines will accept that they are allowed to require vaccines but will be fined accordingly. In the beginning they will say this fine is $5000 per person to make a story out of it (the law says "up to" $5,000), but what will eventually happen is the lines will refuse to pay it, the state will sue them, it will go into mediation. That per person fine will get negotiated down to a reasonable (if non-existent) rate. Especially if by the time this goes to trial, it may be in the beginning of a presidential election year and the FL Governor might find himself running for the white house. He wont be trying to bankrupt a cruise lien in his own state in the middle of that. This will get settled out of court, very quietly.

Perhaps they think they can appeal the fines in court and win that appeal. Or else celeb will be bankrupt. They can't sustain that for long and they can't pass that fine on to the customer? Surely not.

It depends on what the argument is.  Will Celebrities argument be that what the state is doing is unconstitutional?  If that is the case there can be no mediation.  It either is or it is not.  Which I suspect will be the argument since its very plainly laid out.  My thought is they will just not charge them.  Then there is no challenge to the law.

The fine is "up to" $5000. The state of FL has no intention of trying to bankrupt a cruise line. That won't play well in the press.

You'll likely either see the fine reduced ($1 per instance), or the state won't even bother to charge it. If they do, the cruise lines could then decide to sue, or just not pay and invite the state to sue.

Either way, this won't end up with a "bankrupt the cruise" level of fine.

I'll admit that I haven't read the entire thread.....

I wouldn't book a cruise with contact tracing until I knew the rules for determining "contact".  What is the time and distance formula?  What kind of assumptions are made about masked vs. unmasked?  Does a single person on a bus tour getting the virus result in everyone on the bus being quarantined?

I suspect they aren’t going to spell out the rules for anybody ahead of time. Doesn’t matter if there are tracking brackets or not. Have you ever read a cruise contract? It basically gives the cruise lines the rights to do whatever they want. If you don’t like it when they alter the deal, all you can do is pray they don’t alter it further.

I find your lack of faith that masks will be worn forever on cruise ships quite disturbing.

Well to be honest you really have no rights on a cruise ship other than what the contract states and where the ship is flagged.   I think its been that way forever and if a cruise line intentionally mandated a mask what can anyone do.  Other than not sign the contract or get thrown off at the next port if you break the rules.  At the end of the day the mask thing will end.  Going on forever is not reality.  Will it be a year or two who knows.  But it will end eventually.

This "masks forever / masks for life" !@#$%$ talk has been going on for quite sometime...like a forever broken record.  Now that the CDC has updated its mask guidance, you'd think it would stop, but no, it has taken a life of its own.

What if 1 person onboard Harmony lets say has a variant that can evade vaccines? Answer maybe half the ship gets infected and possibly spreads around the country upon leaving. In no other circumstances but a cruise ship are thousands of people together for a week at a time.

Not sure why they would need to know where I was on the ship other than that I'm aboard.

I am sure their marketing department would love to know where everyone was all the time. Just think about how much they could save in marketing to their 'guests' if they knew how much time everyone spends looking at art or is in the casino (playing or not), laying by the pool, window shopping and in which shops, etc.

It would also seem reasonable for that information to likely be up loaded to big RCCL in case it would be needed at a later date if someone is found to be COVID positive shortly after debarking.

This ^^

Add:  how many of you have cruised Princess?

Their Medallion technology is a tracker with some additional billing, cabin door access, etc. features, and is very well received by passengers. What in the world are you doing that you are so paranoid about being "tracked".

Yes, there also are a few conspiracy theorists over on the Princess board,  but they are quickly voted down.

I know we are all bored with no, or limited cruises to plan, but there has to be something better to complain about.

I have, and my last cruise with them was Nov 13, 2017 on the Regal Princess out of Port Everglades for 2 nights, it was their first “Medallion Class” introductory sailing and everyone that was the least bit important in Carnival Corporation was on the ship. I was under the impression ‘everyone’ on the ship would using Medallions, up until about 3 weeks before sailing when most us received an email from Princess telling us different, I put Princess on my do not sail list following that cruise and it is still there. I do not like being “misled”, to be nice, about the capability of the ‘Medallions” to track people among other things.

And no, I am not one of those ‘afraid of technology’ types, or ‘conspiracy theorists’; I have an IT background.

To the user who posted about not wanting to wear an "Orwellian" device you have one in your pocket/purse that tracks your every move and that is your cell phone. Also every time you use your debit/credit card and/or your local merchant reward card you are being tracked and that purchase is being recorded.  There is very little you can do to get away from being tracked in your everyday life. I recently worked in a data mining company and it is scary the amount of data being collected on each of us.

I concur. However it is impossible to track me if I leave my phone at home like I usually do. Or if I pay cash and don't use a loyalty card.

It is scary what data is collected which is what probably upsets most.

If a contact tracing device is used ONLY for contact tracing of COVID, I could get on board with that.  On a cruise ship, I don't have as much of a concern it would be used for anything more than that.  But outside of that, there is this assumption that when I buy a phone that it gives every marketing company the right to trace my every move, purchase, places visited.......and then either flood me with suggestions or tell the world about where I've been.

I've turned most of that off on my phone but so many apps require it be on to even function.

I would hope this device is only used for what it is intended.  If not, give me some booze and I won't care.

Agreed.  People who think this is a great idea will feel differently if they are imprisoned in their room because they may have been somewhere near someone who had a positive covid test.

Exactly!

It seems a life time ago that I posted about not wanting to wear a"tracelet"Many jumped to the conclusion that I feared being watched. Not so,I just hated the whole manditory bracelet idea.Well,we voted with our feet and cancelled our Sept.cruise and are sailing on Oceania in2022.No more RCCL for us  until the Covid problem is in everyones" rear mirrors"I mean when we can sail freely without worries.Happy and safe sailing to all !!!
