Bruinboy Posted June 11, 2021 #4 Share Posted June 11, 2021 Sounds like Celebrity handled the situation well. If I read the article correctly, they were asymptotic and were tested at the end of the cruise. Also, everyone fully vaccinated on the cruise except for children.
mcrcruiser Posted June 11, 2021 Author #5 Share Posted June 11, 2021 imo the implication will have a resounding impact on the current court battle between Gov DeSantis & the CDC . Time will tell all

The poster is very impressed with how it was all handled. Listening to medical professionals this morning on this and they heaved a huge sigh of relief that everyone was vaccinated. It prevented the spread and the 2 that had positive results were not sick at all. All in all, a good reason for the ship to be vaccinated IMO.

My fear though, is the cruiselines' fear of losing revenue from the anti-vax crowd and caving to the almighty allure of the dollar. Greed trumps public health as we've all seen over the past year. 6

Rare VMax1700 Posted June 11, 2021 #11 Share Posted June 11, 2021 A few random thoughts....... this was a 7 night cruise. it takes 10/14 days for the virus to develop. They may have contracted the virus before travelling. They may have contracted the virus at their place of work or at a restaurant or shopping while still at home. They may have contracted the virus on a flight or at the airport. the two pax are asymptomatic. False positives are more than possible. Media will of course blame the cruise lines as they are an easy target.
syesmar Posted June 11, 2021 #12 Share Posted June 11, 2021 (edited) Here’s the Threads over at the Celebrity Board discussing this: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2783664-process-details-for-the-celebrity-millennium-sint-maarten-sailings/page/12/ (passenger on board live blogging) + https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2784744-two-test-positive-on-millenium/ I pasted this over at the “Will you go if everyone is not Vaccinated” Thread, but here’s an eyewitness account: https://thepointsguy.com/news/celebrity-millennium-cruise-ship-covid/ To answer initial questions: A second test confirmed the positive result for both 8 kids are on board, so the sailing is not “fully vaccinated” as media and RCG’s press release claimed (apparently they’re able to say this even if they’re following the “95% vaccinated” guidance, though this has led to erroneous headlines) Shore Ex contacts were tested, all came back negative (according to GMA) Initial reports are that the 2 passengers are Dutch nationals From the eyewitness article, “I asked what will happen to the ill passengers when we reach St. Maarten in two days — we have a sea day tomorrow — and I was told that they will have to disembark, go straight to a hotel and stay there until they return negative test results.” Best wishes to all passengers! Very possible. They have said all along that it was possible for those vaccinated to still contract the virus. They have also said the symptoms would be much less serious. It appears they are correct in this instance.

There is nothing new in the above. 2 people in the same cabin tested positive That is not a false positive. There is Covid (of course) on the ship. We will see how it works out....
Horizon chaser 1957 Posted June 11, 2021 #19 Share Posted June 11, 2021 (edited) The biggest take away is a glimpse of the future normal. Read the blog post. Yes, two people tested positive. Neither one got sick. None of their close contacts tested positive or got sick. Celebrity had protocols and followed them. The two positives were confined to their cabin. They were retested to eliminate the possibility of a false positive. Close contacts of the two were confined to their cabins until their negative test results came back, at which point they were free to go. The rest of the passengers carried on carrying on. All in all, it was no big deal, and certainly not a Diamond Princess! This is likely to be a normal occurrence moving forward in real life. Covid is not going away, we’re just learning how to safely assimilate it into our world. Edited June 11, 2021 by Horizon chaser 1957 18

Yes, my heart sank when I read the headline. But it's actually good news. This was not spread all over the ship. It was two people in the same cabin. Regardless of when they were infected or where (it didn't happen on the ship obviously), they didn't spread it all over the place. Furthermore, they were vaxxed and hence they aren't overtly sick. So all is well. Celebrity responded beautifully.
atexsix Posted June 11, 2021 #21 Share Posted June 11, 2021 (edited) Not surprised. There's no way you can bring that many people together and not have cases of Covid or anything else for that matter. It's inevitable and naïve to think otherwise. To not want people vaccinated is completely nuts! Glad it happened now, the sooner we can put the "what ifs" behind us the better, the anti-ship crowd is just waiting to say I told ya so. I agree that this will be a normal occurrence on a vaccinated ship, but one wonders what it would be like if there were a significant number of unvaccinated cruisers (other than a very few children) aboard.

Laminator Posted June 11, 2021 #25 Share Posted June 11, 2021 I think we need to wait a little while here to get more information. First and foremost they need to verify that those 2 pax were indeed vaccinated. Plus we need to wait 10 to 14 days to see if other pax/crew do become infected. We will have a much better picture at that time. 5
