Banning smoking in casinos anytime soon seems unlikely

Did you read the article?  It also stated this:

Banning smoking, which the company has tested, produces lower revenue in the casino.

That may be the case, but I wonder how long and hard did they market that the casino was non-smoking? Maybe it wasn’t enough to let all the people who would gamble if smoking wasn’t allowed.

Smokers are more valuable in the casino.   They need the smokers in there.  They drink more and gamble more and  stay longer  than the tea-totaller non smokers do.     😁

They are getting free drinks.  Not a source of revenue for Royal Caribbean.

Like smoking, RC invests booze into luring gamblers.

You meant RCCL(these people) right?

Can you smoke in Atlantic City casinos 2022?  working on banning it in casino's now.

April 12, 2022, at 12:50 p.m. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — On the 16th anniversary of a New Jersey law that banned indoor smoking in most public places — except in casinos — hundreds of Atlantic City casino workers called on state lawmakers Tuesday to ban smoking in the gambling halls.Apr 12, 2022

ACY has banned smoking before. That lasted about a week. Then the ash trays all came back out. All comes down to revenue. The once casino that kept it non-smoking, went bankrupt.

The $3 in alcohol that the casino invests makes hundreds while the server goes to get it and brings it back. And the more $3 drinks they give out, the [much] more money they bring in at the tables.

Agreed, but Celebrity had been marketing 'All included' pricing in recent months which , at first glance, be much higher than RCCL's basic cruise prices.

I did an in-depth evaluation for Transatlantic cruises next Spring and found that, like for like, RCCL, Celebrity, Princess Nd NCL all came quite close on the daily rate, for a mid range balcony room .

Celebrity now also has a Cruise only option without drinks, WiFi and tips (except for Aqua Class and Suites) on all cruises.

It's a totally different issue for passengers and the world is full of potential employees to replace any who are worried about long term health issues.

The casino is a lucrative opportunity for these people.

I don’t know, the world seems to be getting short on workers all around, even on cruise ships as this summer surge in travel is making it hard for the cruise lines to accommodate. Don’t know if that’s also true in the casino.

Cruised on the Carnival Mardi Gras recently.  They designed the casino with an even split between smoking and non smoking.  One is on the port side, the other on starboard.  In between are mostly walls and glass doors.  Interestingly, the casino host and bar are on the non smoking side.  I never set foot on the smoking side.

I’m surprised more cruise lines don’t take advantage of this “best of both worlds” option and put a wall in like this. The ships all dry dock every few years, it wouldn’t take long to accommodate.

I do think the idea of smoking and non smoking casinos should be looked into.   Granted the non smoking one should be smaller.    Seems like they could carve out space somewhere in these monster ships for a non smoking option.

Try Wonder.

No problem for me....keeps me out of there...and from spending the nest egg in there.  😄

We are in the casino just long enough to play/lose our C&A $6.00 free slot plays. Even if the casinos were smoke free we wouldn't spend anymore time in the casino. Not gamblers.,

Me too.  Just a few minutes on sea day, early in the morning that has less smokers in at that time.  Recently found out you can....whoo...hoo...get 8.00 in free play if you play on day one or two.  😉

We forgot about that on our last cruise.   Though Bucky scored 48.00 on his 6.00 free play.   Bucky big bucks. 😄

Have you seen the lines wrapped around buildings at Royals most recent job fairs? A supply of willing labor is not a problem.

No, I’m 54 and haven’t been to a job fair in decades. However, I have read accounts of the travel industry including cruise lines being overwhelmed and unable to meet demands.  And I was pretty equivocal in my comment, it was a suggestion.

Try Wonder.

The Wonder was 100% opposite of what it needs. The Golden Room is a tiny space for nonsmokers. Not very useful.

Consider NCL's newest ships (Joy, Bliss, Encore) which all have larger, enclosed smoking areas with the main casino (which is open to halls) as non-smoking space.

Do they hold job fairs for jobs like room stewards, waiters, etc.?  Where are those held?

My post was in answer to another poster who suggested two separate casinos on one of the larger Oasis classes, who was apparently unaware the Golden Room exists on Wonder.

But thanks anyway.

I really wonder if the test cruises were handled in a way to give eralistic results?  Were all passengers clearly informed that the casino would be non msoking, both in advance of the cruise and again onboard?

Celebrity, cruses in Australia, etc non smokers know in advance that the casino will be a smoke free venue and they do not need to avoid it...and I think that is one reason there are still plenty of people in it.    If these test cruises only told people at the caison, or in caisno themed marketing to staterooms or emails (which I toss without reading on RCI because I assume the caison will be too msokey to bother) the word probably never got out to most smoking adverse perspective gamblers.

The one they had in Trinidad & Tobago had long lines thanks to an agreement between RC and the T&T government. I haven't heard of any other example.

Again its down to culture or where you live. In the uk there is no smoking inside. This has been so much better esp in nightclubs and pubs. Casinos have been fine as well as people are now used to it. Even smokers i know say its better inside yes annoying they have to go outside but its not a big issue for them anymore.

RCL cruise from a lot of ports usa, europe where smoking is allowed inside so people on those cruises expect to be able to smoke inside. Its not pleasent for us non-smokers but at end of the day if its allowed then it is what it is. I just dont go in the casinos.

This is one I most recently read about, there have been a couple others with similar turn out. Plenty of folks out there wanting the work, US immigration and Visas seem to be the larger obstacle.

I am a non-smoking gambler who has sailed RCCL enough to make D+.

In the last 7 years we have changed mostly to Celebrity because of the non smoking casino.  Inb that seven years we have 11 cruises on X including the all the longer ones and only 4 on RCL which were all shorter drive to cruises from Galveston and NOLA.  I am not big into shore excursions, shopping or the Spa so I need some place to "launder" my non refundable on credit into at least some cash. On recent X cruises that has been an average of $800 OBC which means a little more casino time than the $8 free play we were discussing earlier.  I don't win but I do come away with partial value on the OBC.  I don't know what you do with the OBC when you can't  stand the air in the casinos long enough to gamble.  I don't even enter the casinos on RCL ships long enough to do CC slot pulls.

Go first thing in the morning when the smoker/drinkers (apparently they're the same people) are sleeping off the night before 🙂
