I thought the problem with plastics is they never fully degrade. The plastic becomes the size of a molecule and hangs around inside our bodies.

 

In any case, complaining about Carnival not keeping up with Royal, in this instance, is grasping at straws. 🤪

In my experience working at a Diner, waiters and busers absolutely do throw teaspoons away. Never intentionally, but we were replacing teaspoons quite frequently. Servers would be rolling the silverware into napkins and we'd run out of teaspoons and we'd still have a large pile of forks and knives. Something about the weight and size of the spoon, maybe?

Can't tell you how many pieces of silverware that are found in the industrial sized garbage disposals on the ships.  Only good for artwork at that point.

Besides having the first cruise ship over 100 K tons with the Destiny and having the first cruise ships with  a self propelled bike and a roller coaster, can you name anything else that Carnival has been innovative about?   Their competitors always come up with new and innovative things and Carnival just clings to the fact that they are the "Fun Ships" that are family oriented.  It gets old after awhile.  The Excel Class has been a game changer for them, so I will give them that.  But it's very frustrating that the cruise line I have over 50% of my cruises taken on is usually a follower and rarely a leader.

The smoke free Paradise comes to mind. Some of the true innovators are no longer in business.

My sister actually loves the straws. She will actually eat the ones I get also. So there are people out there who like them. I bring a metal straw to use if I need one.

I will admit I am a big straw person.  So, I bought myself the stainless straws with the silicone tips.  I bought ones that were straight and bent (because everyone needs a bendy straw).  I also bought myself silicone milkshake straws.  I make frozen dinks at home and they work great and I can toss them in the dishwasher.  I plan to take all my straws with me.  Not an issue and better for the environment.

Technically still not a fully approved/implemented use, last I looked.  Starlink was only licensed for fixed position usage (attached to a non-moving structure, like a house).  Not even supposed to use them with a (moving) RV, and even an RV parked overnight at a campground required a "portability" extra fee, apparently.  The FCC recently made a ruling that they can start to use them truly mobile, but Starlink hasn't implemented it, AFAIK.  This site has a good recent explanation, IMHO:

yes I said it was being tried out on just one ship.

 

I'm still hoping it gets approved. Fastest better wifi would be awesome for cruise ships.

Carnival was far ahead of the times and the casino was not the only reason. The crew likes to smoke, too. These days, the ship might well succeed. I could be worth another experiment since Fantasy class ships seem to be on the way out.

 

Meanwhile Celebrity has smoke free casinos and does okay. Disney doesn't have any at all.

All the straws on panorama were made of sugar! Edible sugar straws! There were no plastic straws at all. 

 

Carnival has been using biodegradable sugar straws since 2019.

Not all innovations work out. One innovation that Carnival pioneered was their home port strategy - how many other cruise lines have as many home ports as Carnival?  In general though I do agree that Carnival has mostly stuck to their formula and it's earned them wild success.

 

But I can't help but think the industry is changing and they're not keeping up. Time will tell I suppose.

I don't really care enough to look up. But along with home ports are short cruises. Does anyone do more?

 

Carnival has been in business for 50 years. Some of their cruise lines much longer than that. They know who and what butters their bread. They have a variety of cruise lines for those who are looking for more. Nobody is forced to cruise on any of them. Don't blame Carnival if you made a mistake.
