Thank you for the Saturday report, Rich. I'll celebrate all 3 of the days today and hoping things aren't too stressful today for @kazu as she leaves the Oosterdam.  I'm glad Fairbanks is billed as a destination rather than a port;  it's one of the few places I will miss on my Grand Alaska next year.   Not sure what to think of the quote and I'll pass on the meal.  My alternative is Apple, Pear, and Cucumber Salad, Cracked Pepper Beef Tenderloin (holding the shrimp), and Vanilla ice cream as served last night on MS Eurodam:

@Lady Hudson's post has me a bit stressed out trying to figure what to carry onto the Auto Train so I don't freeze if I step outside while waiting for my car to be delivered.

Still stormy but my foot feels a bit better for some walking on inside corridors today.

Today’s care list:

Medical emergency on Oosterdam
Kazu severe foot injury
Ottahand7 Brother in rehab
Terri’s next door neighbor Joanne with stroke and complications
Jazzyv digestive issues
Cruisin Terri continuing autoimmune flareup
From the rotation:
Luvteaching DH recovering from fall and facing dimentia
Status of St. Louis Sal (7/1) and JAM37 (7/7)
HAL Sailer Sister in Law with aggressive cancer therapy
Cruisin Terri leak damage

Celebrations and Shoutouts:

Alianchief in California
Good riddance Marshhawk boss from hell
Welcome home Norseh2o, Kazu , 0106, jimgev, Heartgrove and ger_77
7 days for Ichiban Nekko and Himself (Nieuw Statendam 11/26 to 12/3)
1 day for Cruise Suzy, Lazey1, and HAL Lover (Rotterdam 11/20 to 11/30)
Bon Vouage StLouisCruisers and Summer Slope (Volendam 11/19 to 12/17)
Bon Voyage Damcruiser (Nieuw Statendam 11/19 to 1/14/23)
RednckBob (Beyond  to 11/20), CrazyForCats (Nieuw Amsterdam to 11/20), and me (Eurodam to 11/20) at sea
Cunnorl (Noordam to 1/2/23),  and  Horizon Chaser1957 (Zaandam 10/1 to 12/20; Zuiderdam 12/22 to 5/12) at sea

My Nav app still says 4 but cruisemapper.com shows the ship at 19. In addition we’ve just arrived at the Volendam and it’s definitely at 19. 😂. The majority here waiting are not wearing masks even though once they step on the ship they will be mandatory for the first 3 days and possibly longer. A handout they gave us says we will all be tested on Nov 22 to determine masking rules further on.

I hope you have an amazing cruise Sandi.

P&O are not enforcing mask wearing on board.

Wine of the Day - Quady North 2015 Cabernet Franc (Applegate Valley)

Quady?  Making a Cabernet Franc?  I know Quady as a dessert wine maker.  Have they branched out?  Where is Applegate Valley.

As usual @cat shepard answered my questions.

Quady North 2015 Cabernet Franc (Applegate Valley)

Another wine I would love to taste. And I would love to meet the winemaker. Several online distributors with prices starting at $35.00.

93 Wine Enthusiast

Distributor Notes

Applegate Valley clearly can grow Cab Franc superbly well. Another undeniably tasty wine featuring notes of coffee, black cherries, and ancho chili, we really like the pure expression of Cab Franc going on here. Consider serving this with an ancho and coffee-dusted skirt steak.

During a recent visit to the store, President for Life Herb Quady and his Quady North wines really won us over. Honest, no-nonsense, humbly priced wineries aren’t as easy to come by as they were a decade ago, and we’re thrilled to add another one to our family of featured producers.

Quady North is one of the few Southern Oregon wineries we’ve featured. That’s a deeper discussion for another time and more space but to be succinct, they poured the most interesting and delicious line-up of Southern Oregon wine we’ve tasted from a single producer, in a decidedly unpretentious manner.

Background: Herb grew up on his family’s winery in Central California with a compulsory love for Muscat, but after an accidental exposure to the world of Rhone varieties at the hand of the infamous Randall Graham, he became obsessed with the idea of making (gasp!) table wines. After earning his winemaking props at Fresno State, he eventually found his way into the great unknown of Southern Oregon.

Herb and his family moved from California in late 2003, convinced that Southern Oregon was a region on the verge of exploding onto the wine scene. The climate, with warm days punctuated by afternoon winds and cool nights, reminded him of Southern France, and he was convinced that Rhone varieties would thrive.

In 2005, the Quady family purchased 100 acres, which contained the remains of an old motocross track and several dozen aging vehicles, and set upon the long task of converting it into an Estate vineyard.  The next year, Herb and Meloney made the first vintage from purchased fruit while Herb worked as a winemaker at Troon Vineyard. Sourcing from distinct sites at disparate corners of the region, the first vintage was of excellent quality, and showed the terroir of each site.

The original planting was named "Mae's Vineyard" after elder daughter Margaux Mae.  Mae's is planted to Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Tannat, Malbec and Orange Muscat. In 2011, a second planting was named for younger daughter Serafina Eevee and was planted to Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Cabernet Franc, Grenache Noir and Malvasia Bianca.  Both are "LIVE" (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) certified sustainable.

As the Estate Vineyards came into bearing, the Quady's continued to purchase fruit from the original sites, eventually forming a business that would manage these sites and more. These vineyard sites: Serenade (near Ashland), Steelhead Run (near the Applegate River), Sam's Valley (in the upper Rogue) and the Frank's Vineyard (now called Serra) would form a critical part of the winery's portfolio, and are the source of many great wines.

Over time, the portfolio has expanded to become Pan-Rhon-ish, with a distinct Loire-ish influence. Recently, Grenache has played a larger part, becoming the basis of Dry Rose, a GSM blend, as well as the early-release "Bomba.”

The winery is not "Quady."  It's "Quady North."  Applegate Valley is in Southern Oregon.  It looks like it is adjacent to Rogue Valley,  Herb Quady, the "President for Life,"  (Hmm.  I probably shouldn't spread that around because some people might think it is a real title which they deserve.),  is the scion of the family that owned the winery in Madera California with which I was familiar.

Thank you, @cat shepard.  You resolved all my questions.  This is one of the reasons that I visit "The Daily" daily.

There were a couple things in the "Distributor Notes" that caught my eye.

I am fanatical about spelling and grammar. Herb Quady's "accidental exposure to the world of Rhone varieties" was at the hand of Randall Grahm (not Graham).  This faux pas is not the fault of @cat shepard.  I went to the Quady North website and found the same mistake.

Randall Grahm is a singularly important California winemaking figure.  He was one of (if not the) original Rhone Rangers--a group of winemakers who espoused the use of grape varieties used in France's Rhone Valley.  There are over 60 varieties used in the various Rhone districts, but the most well-known of these are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre.  The efforts of the Rhone Rangers turned out to be particularly well-received in the Paso Robles region although I can point to impressive Rhone variety wines produced from almost every region of California.

Grahm has evolved (as most of us do) from an enfant terrible in his early days to become a respected elder (albeit, not surrendering his quirkiness) of California winemakers.

The other thing that intrigued me is that Herb Quady's daughter is named Margaux.  Margaux is, of course, the the highly regarded wine appellation in Bordeaux region.  Arguably, the most famous maker in that region is Chateau Margaux.  It seems strange to me that she was named after a Bordeaux appellation rather than one from Rhone or Loire.  Of course, who's kidding who?  Margaux is a much more melodious name than, say, Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Crozes-Hermitage although Chinon (speaking of Cabernet Franc) would not be bad.  😆

Greetings all.  Nice day here, 74 and sunny.  Just helped put up our Christmas lights at our condo.  It is early, but next Saturday many of us will be busy.

Speaking of busy, it is a very busy Saturday in Ft Lauderdale and Miami.  Oosterdam went to Miami as there was no room in FTL.  Volendam and Nieuw Statendam are there along with five other cruise ships.

@StLouisCruisersHave a wonderful cruise!  Was hoping to meet you on the GSA. Maybe another time.

A couple of questions for you. Can you let me know if magnets work for the Volendam walls. Several of us would like to know, and we are getting conflicting reports.  Is there a liquid soap dispenser beside the sink?   Thanks.

Glad I saw this question. No I tried magnets and they don’t work on any door or wall in an oceanview room. Disappointing. And there is a soap as well as a lotion dispenser next to the sink.

it would have been nice to meet you too!  🥲

Good Saturday Afternoon!  I got up early to print my paperwork for my new campaign, watched qualifying for the F1 race, and attended my training session for my new campaign.  While my new boss is not snowed in, (he lives in Rochester) I think he is lonely, cause that meeting lasted 2.5 hours!  Then after the meeting, I made a sandwich and got on line for Houston calls as I had call backs.  None of the call backs showed up, but I did get a donation.🙂

My new campaign is Friends of Lincoln Center.  Fund rasing.  So two fund raising gigs at the same time.  I am not very good at fund raising.  I'm supposed to be asking for 1000, and heck, I'm happy if they donate 10 bucks.  I must learn to be more assertive.  My "hire" boss says I'm afraid of rejection and that there is no harm in asking for a thousand.  People have money.  My problem is, I don't know people with "MONEY" anymore, so I am happy with a donation which gives them a  warm fuzzy hug feeling, and I want to spread the warm fuzzy love feeling along for the rest of the day.

And I guess it would help if my leads had given a thousand before, but I'm calling 10-100 buck donors.

So this week I ended up with 950 in donations, and one sale for mr wacky for 150.00.  Thank you all for the support today.

To all of you who are sailing this week-

@grapau27Thank you for the food porn!  What a spread!

I made a pot roast in the crock pot yesterday, with veggies, and it was wonderful!  Irving cat got a piece, DH and I had two slices, and we had sandwiches today made with the left overs, but we dont have enough left to make it a dinner tonight, so it's take DH out for BBQ tonight as soon as he gets off work.  His boss is pretty much giving them the week off next week.  They work Monday and Tuesday and then they are off.  I work short shifts on Monday,  Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with two shifts on Tuesday. But his boss is letting them work tomorrow....which means I get yard work!  Yippee! or nap.  hmmm...

@Quartzsite Cruiser I hope they can solve the mystery of what's going on with your DH's blood pressure.  Hope this little guy can help-

Munster cheese.  Or as my mom called it Monster cheese.  My dad was very fond of it, but mom believed the smell to over power every thing in the fridge, so Dad was allowed to buy it in the late fall, and early spring, and leave it on the porch.  He would get home from work, walk in the house, and head to his cheese.  I love the crispy mushrooms.  Fried mushrooms, are a food from the fry gods.

I have no idea what i will do with all the free time on my hands not working 8 hour days....I am currently doing a Death in Paradise marathon on Britbox, I could learn to nap, and try actual cooking.  Oh the wonders of life!

I meant to mention something about apple cider yesterday.  Apple Cider does not mean that there is alcohol in it, while in my drinking days I did enjoy that.  It has something to do with the pressing of the apple...

I however like cider hot or cold...

The main difference between apple cider vs apple juice comes down to pasteurization. Apple cider tends to be unpasteurized and unfiltered, while apple juice is nearly always pasteurized and filtered. Apple cider may contain pulp, while apple juice won’t. These factors affect flavor, expiration, and composition. Funnily enough, while this means apple juice can exist without refrigeration and apple cider must be refrigerated, apple juice is often consumed cold while apple cider is consumed hot.

I think I would like the mushroom and muenster sliders, but I could only eat a little, because of both of the major ingredients. I would definitely like a rye Old Fashioned, and would have ordered one Thursday evening if any of my dinner companions had been willing to have a drink. I haven't been to Fairbanks. Roy's alternative would be OK with me but I would order something other than ice cream.

Remember all the baking for Thursday evening? The in-person attendance was lower than expected, maybe because of an unfavorable, but wrong, weather forecast although Zoom was higher, and everyone baked more than needed, so we have dozens of cookies left over, now frozen for other occasions. Breakfast Friday morning, however, had all but one who were expected (knee injury, couldn't drive). This morning I skipped the synagogue because of needing sleep, but got there in time for a class at noon.

I'm taken aback by the amount of snow in the Buffalo area. Buffalo is only little more than 100 miles from here, as the crow files, but much farther by road, and the heaviest snow fell in the southern suburbs, which are in our Congressional district. No snow at all here.

Dinner tonight is strips of red bell pepper, scrambled, eggs, and roasted Brussels sprouts and carrots. For Thanksgiving I plan to make chicken schnitzel from a Michael Solomonov recipe that adds hawaij spices to the eggs, and have a Grüner Veltliner with it. I was told about this by one of the best cooks whom I know, whose recipes always require some hard-to-find ingredient, although hawaij is a blend of common-enough spices. By that time I might have roasted some squash, and more Brussels sprouts (roasting is the only way I like them).

We are having our first snow storm of the season  that has caused things to close early and warnings from the police regarding driving if it isn't needed.  My husband and I have a beautiful fire in the fireplace with apple and pear wood burning at the same time. (We have a friend who owns an orchard.) It isn't anywhere as bad as Buffalo, but it looked like a snow globe out there earlier.

@marshhawk I was also going to comment on cider yesterday and totally forgot.  To me cider means regular apple cider without alcohol.  Hard cider has alcohol.   (Somersby's comes to mind.)  Because we live in the fruit belt of Ontario, I do see a lot of apple cider available at fruit stands.

Bringing up cider again brings up memories of the British Navy China Fleet Club in Hong Kong in 1959 and 60.  I learned to drink Bulmer's Woodpecker Cider there.  We sometimes drank so much that we fell off of our bar stool, but we never had a headache the next day.  Perhaps Graham knows if it is still sold in Great Britain.

Thanks so much for the quick response.  I will get Command hooks.

Enjoy the cruise.
