Celebrity trivia games

On our last cruise with Celebrity (on the Eclipse, July 2-9, 2023) no prizes were awarded for trivia games winners.  Your award was merely a lackluster round of applause.  Has anyone else experienced this?   😮

Thanks so much

It must be an X thing.  Last year in Alaska on the Solstice, same thing.

We did have one trivia game on that cruise with a prize, but it was in Michael's Club and 1st and 2nd place won bottles of wine.  Surprizingly, we won.  😁  🍷

On our recent Edge cruise in the Med the entertainment staff stated from the outset that there would be no prizes. This was stated to be a company policy, and they implied it was now an industry norm. They were upbeat about it and suggested there was no longer any point cheating!

Celebrity has switched to a ticket prize system - for every trivia, contest, game that you win, you are given a prize ticket which you collect and save until the last full day of the cruise when you turn in your tickets for prizes - the more tickets you collect, the more significant the prize you can pick.  Not to get too excited, as in general, the 'big' prizes are t-shirts.  The 8pm game show is an exception to this - you receive an actual prize for that game, usually a hat or a deck of cards or some such branded piece of merchandise.  Team Trivia is a big exception to this.  We sailed on Eclipse this spring from March 26 through May 21.  There were two very long cruises during that span, sailing from Sydney to Hawaii and then from Hawaii to Vancouver - lots of sea days, so Team Trivia was a big deal.  You form your team on the first sea day and you stay with that same team throughout that cruise, accumulating points for each time you meet - for these cruises, it was always 10am every sea day in the Sky Lounge.  The winning team is announced on the final sea day after the final game.  The prizes for this were pretty significant.  Since there is a Corning Glass still on the Eclipse, every member of the winning team received a beautiful hand blown Corning Glass item as well as a beautiful EFFY leather banded bracelet with a silver "X" charm - very nice!  And of course, a few lesser Celebrity branded items to round out the lovely gift bag which every member of the winning team was presented.  Husband was on the winning team for both of these long cruises - he worked, I reaped the rewards.  😄

I had seen some instances of trivia getting out of hand with the competitiveness of teams.  In one case shouting , finger pointing and threats during a game.  Another time members of 2 teams got into a shoving match over who was cheating the day before this was on the pool deck. Yes this was on Celebrity.  Probably a good thing to drop the prizes.

Does anybody play these trivia games because of the prizes awarded?  Probably not.

Sorry, redwings.........I like to get the 'chinzy' prizes.  😀  🤪

Yeah, what @Robb said.  I haven't had a chance to play trivia on Celebrity (except once on one of their charters), mostly because I haven't seen categories that are of interest to me, but if the changes discussed in this thread are truly being implemented fleetwide, I'll shuffle it down the priority list on future cruises.

On past cruises on other cruise lines, I was given real prizes for winning.  The one of the bottom was in lieu of champagne:

Ex-airbalancer............want you to know.....I have filed suit, my lawyer is Rudy Giuliani.  Rudy explained that I would be afforded the same treatment as one of his more famous clients.  🤪  😎  🥸

Seriously, we will continue to play trivia when it is offered, prize or no prize.  It was just a surprize to us.  Playing trivia helps you learn, whether you win or not.  Same reason I work 2-3 crossword puzzles a day and read at least two books a week.  We do pretty good at answering Jeopardy questions.  You are never too old to leaarn.

Some people go to the casino a lot, sit in a bar all day and night drinking or baking themselves in the sun.  Do what you like.

And remember 'pride' goeth before the fall.  No need to stir the pot.

We just got off the Equinox and there were many trivia games. All were no prizes. It is better this way. No more petty competitiveness. People were problems for the crew and it finally was ended. There were still many people playing for fun.

Feb 2022 on Reflection if you won a trivia game you were given little papers that had "points" on them, and at the end of the cruise, you presented the # you had and got little things like cards, glasses case, hat; don't recall what else, according to the # of points you had accumulated. Oh, wait, I won a lanyard at a name that tune--anyone who was first to name the artist of the song got one.   But that was 2022.

FFWD to February 2023 on Beyond.   Nothing.   "Applause" and the game host thought that was funny.

It is fun to win little logo items, and really is free advertising for the line.  Not sure what lines are still giving prizes at this point.

On our Summit cruise a couple of months ago, there were not only no prizes, but some of the staff joked about how people could win a free cruise brochure.  It was humor, but ...

They had some stick on phone holder things at one of the games, but it was not a trivia.

I don't really need more keychains, but I do miss the dumb prizes kind of...

On my Edge cruise last month, I was given a pop socket with the X logo on it when my team won. I'm certain there were little prizes like these every night. I thought it was quite nice as I wasn't expecting anything.

Since they don’t change the questions cruise to cruise, the smart B2B’ers we’re winning all the prizes, so they toned down the prizes.  That’s what I heard, anyway.

We had a similar experience to lexmiller on our 9/22 HNL/SYD 18 day cruise. There was one trivia cumulative concert with set teams for the entire cruise. Our team included cruisers from 3 continents who met on board. We did win lovely pieces of blown glass.Very nice and a great souvenir of a super cruise.

One understands from this thread that Celebrity has withdrawn trivia prizes such as  'deck of cards' and 'lanyard' and replaced said prizes with mediocre applause.

Done to reduce competiveness and rowdiness amongst its passengers . Most interesting.

I can agree that the prizes really are trivial. On our cruise last year we won vouchers which we exchanged small but useful gifts. This year it was just a round of applause. That’s ok - we still enjoyed the trivia.
What concerns me more is that it’s just another example of constant chipping away at the whole cruise experience. When it gets to the stage of removing the ‘tat’ it really shows the desperation of the cruise companies.
