Our 50 Night Reflection Odyssey

Hi Arno,

I'm glad that you and Joanne are doing fine. I appreciate the updates on the ship and the happy hour. I'm fine if they give out chits to use in various bars as I can't see how they will fit all of the people in the Sky lounge, and it spreads the flow out around the ship.

I do hope that they will keep the Sky lounge open for all to enjoy and socialize during the same two hours. As much as I like trivia games, I would prefer them not to be in that space between 5-7 so people can enjoy the views and sunsets . I hope that the HD can move them to the conference room or some other venue during that time period.

Looking forward to seeing the two of you again in a few weeks on the TA. I hope the weather is sunny and pleasant for the next leg of your cruising adventure.

Kelcie

We're not Elite yet so I won't post my thoughts on the social hour but I wanted to thank you for the time spent giving us a review of the Reflection. We can't wait to be back on Celebrity and will be joining you for the transatlantic segment in two weeks. Enjoy the rest of your odyssey and I'm hoping we get a chance to meet while westbound.

Hi Arno,

I sincerely hope this is Celebrity's way of preparing people for the introduction of a new level in CC. We shall see.

Anne

How I love the lounge and the opportunities to meet frequent cruisers and hear their stories..

I hate energetic early risers! At 6:15 am this morning, “thumper” was trying to win the marathon on the treadmill. I will be so glad when this cruise is over because I will no longer be subjected to the THUMP-A-THUMP morning wake up call. Since our change of room request on day one of this cruise we have been living with the daily drum roll of those people trying to maintain their health at our expense. As a result of this daily premature awakening for ten days of this cruise I am now in a kranky mood. I am a light sleeper and the loud automatic slamming of doors as the partying crowd return from their revels, as the efficient vacuum toilet systems which were adapted from navy surplus depth charge mechanisms all combine to deprive me from my needed sleep, athletic types really are the last straw.

Our cruise started off with nine miserable days of weather and has continued with ten days of cacophony. The “Inaugural” was a bust for anyone expecting a unique cruising experience based on the premium ticket price. There was absolutely nothing that marked the inaugural as different from any other cruise except for the blue and white balloon arch that welcomed passengers to the terminal. Not a single token of being first was given to passengers prior to disembarkation.

Today is however a jewel of a day. We are docked in Mykonos and the day is perfect! Warm in the sun, cool in the shade, a temperature in the mid 70’s. This is the first time that we have been in Mykonos that a free shuttle has not been provided. After some food overindulgence in the last few days, I talked Joanne into walking downtown because the cost of the one mile shuttle was the equivalent of a bottle of wine at lunch and our caloric imbalance would be corrected. The road to town is risky with no sidewalks and only an occasional safety zone. It is absolutely amazing how often cars happen to come from both directions at the same time as no escape is possible. Taxis seem to delight in frightening hikers to encourage fares and discourage walking to town. Mykonos is a picture takers delight. Everywhere you turn another wonderful vista or charming scene unfolds. I can’t understand why my photobucket will not allow me to upload pictures for use on cruise critic so that I can show off my pics.

Shopping: Kusadasi/Rhodes/Mykonos.

These three ports are absolutely wonderful! Kusadasi has such great choice but pushy merchants make it almost impossible to window shop. I LOVE Rhodes. Whether strolling, absorbing history or eating and drinking as people walk by, there is no more appealing city in the Mediterranean. The prices are great; fantastic deals can be had compared to Mykonos where merchandise seems much more expensive. In Kusadasi you must be prepared to haggle over the price. I forgot my sun glasses at home and I shopped for a new pair. Upon the initial price request, I was told $35, a price at which I could do without until I got home, but as I walked out the $20 deal was very attractive for the genuine fake brand name shades that now make me look so rich. These three days have been spectacular as far as weather is concerned, as perfect as any tourist could want. However the news concerning our journey to Venice seems to be very unpleasant.

Captain’s Club:

While I was lying awake for most of last night wondering how much nicer it would be (sorry but the people in “Sandy’s” destructive path where not foremost in my thoughts) to be on another ship with no treadmills, slamming doors, and quiet non-jet powered flush toilets not contributing to the forward motion of Reflection. Although I have not read all the responses to the change to the voucher system onboard Eclipse, I have posted my own thoughts on the advantages of vouchers compared to my own levels of consumption. When numbers became very large in the lounge over the last two years, the most addicted cruising elites were confined to a smaller lounge while the larger lounge was offered to the less travelled crowd who were required to compete for drinks on the trays of harried waiters and bar staff. A successful marketing program drew all these elites to a perk that was doomed to failure when numbers exceeded the capacity of any lounge on a Celebrity ship. Miami gravely underestimated the drinking capacity of Celebrity elites and RCL diamonds now preferring the X perks. If this system is adopted on other ships, it will not be an improvement of the elite program as promised years ago. As I look back to the initial introduction of Captain club benefits I see nothing but a series of cuts without any improvement for those who are fortunate enough to cruise many times a year. The removal of a dedicated lounge for those who are addicted to cruising Celebrity-style is, in my not so humble opinion, another major downgrade in the Captain’s Club program despite promises of the opposite.

I started this post while suffering from sleep deprivation caused by this ship’s known flaws. The ports of call on this cruise are fantastic, the weather in the hands of mother nature, the crew as friendly as ever but there is nothing so far that would cause me to book another cruise on Reflection. The additional passenger load is noticeable. We were amazed at how rushed our Blu experience is compared to last week. The noise level approaches that of the MDR, the lineups are longer and service is harried. Waiters do not have seconds let alone minutes to spare to describe menus or choice menus. Although we have liked the menu items, the place is being killed by its success. I dislike the dance floor in the grand foyer, smaller than ever, (a known fault), I dislike all the music trivia that has replaced general trivias because I can’t remember a tune nor a band (CRS problem on my part). That’s it for now. Perhaps with some extra sleep my new sun glasses will take on a rose-colored hue tomorrow.

Hi Arno,

OK, now take a deep breath. :) You and Joanne are together in a beautiful part of the world, you have many more cruise days ahead, and things are going to get better. You really have my sympathy regarding "thumper". It is difficult to enjoy anything when sleep deprived. Hoping the next part of your trip is much improved.

Hi Arno,

After many years of interrupted sleep from a loudly snoring husband I finally gave in and got some earplugs. They don't drown out things completely but it's enough to be able to sleep.:D My buddy Phil has also been using an app on his ipad that produces white noise and really seems to help. It's called Sleep Pillow.

Thanks for sharing your Odyssey! Enjoy!

Yes... but I believe that the coupons will be adopted fleetwide as elite numbers are in excess of the capacity of the lounge. Success has killed the best benefit. I will be talking to the HD tomorrow to get details of the upcoming TA cruise. It is not disastrous in my opinion but perhaps a deal changer for heavy consumers of free stuff. As long as people have a chance to share a drink or TWO (not one) in the lounge of their choosing, I believe most people will be satisfied. I still hope that another tier will be introduced for those who are truly addicted to cruising Celebrity-style.

I guess you are right in relation to the difficulties of finding a suitable venue for so many elites. However I cruise sometimes alone. I do not go to a bar to get a drink on my own. I went to the Michaels Club where I met Joanne and yourself and other interesting people because I had the feeling that most people who attend the social hour event, want to socialize. I did not hesitate to talk to other people or to sit with them at the elites event because of that reason. If I were just to receive coupons for free drinks, I am afraid, I will have no use for them. They will be comparible to me to the coupons for the casino, which I do not use because I do not like to gamble.

In your post you use the word "share". I guess what I would like is to continue to have the possibility of sharing toughts and drinks with fellow cruisers before dinner. That possibility was given to me by the elites event. Maybe other people feel the same way as I do.

Hi Arno and Joanne,

I am glad you had beautiful weather the last days. We have arrived in Venice and it is cloudy, cool and raining. Apparently it will remain like this in the next days.

After a very long flight and not being able to sleep for a couple of nights because of pre flight ansiety (is this right in English?), I understand how you feel. Will you guys be able to change cabin for next cruise?

Arno:

the notes you've put up about your experiences on reflection's first two itineraries are pretty interesting. two items are some disturbing: the line-ups and rushed crowds in the BLU and the potential or real change to the elite get-togethers each day.

there seemed to be just enough tables and chairs and staff at the BLU on the summit a few months ago. if due to popular demand celebrity has begun selling more aqua staterooms than the restaurant can handle they need to revisit the issue. the meals at the BLU were excellent because they were prepared for each diner, and the rest of the dining experience was enjoyable because we never felt rushed. we did notice that on a busy night the staff could be a little hurried, but their attention to diners and detail was always excellent. that's why i booked an aqua cabin on the reflection's east bound ta in 2013. i hope i haven't made a mistake.

the cocktail hours we spent in the solstice sisters lounges were wonderful; not for the drinks but for the opportunity to meet people who had the same passion for cruising, the same passion for the celebrity line as we have. if elite tokens for free drinks just drop us off randomly at a variety of other (crowded) bars what's the sense, where's the special, how are the seasoned and passionate cruisers going to find their fellows?

i have been enjoying Arno's post for his honesty. i have learned i prefer a ship under 1000 people. But i am trying out reflection as my almost daughter and son are coming along. i would never book this size ship if not for them..

I could care less about elite happy hour.. been there. .watered down drinks..good company but not for thst who cares. .only really used it for meeting Arno and Joanne and their friends..

i always booked port size on this size ship.. in march i will be starboard.. but i am not below the gym- thank god!

Arno- what is up with the next cruise-you never said..

What a delightful read, in spite of it now making me less than enthusiastic about our upcoming crossing on the Reflection.

Oh well, if nothing else, we will hopefully have the chance to meet you and your wife in a little more than 2 weeks onboard. In the meantime, see if you can get all these kinks worked out for us please. ;)

Earn Double Tier Credit Promotion:

We received an insert last night that Captain’s Club will offer double tier credits for 2013 European cruises booked by November 7. Can you imagine a program that offers nearly instant promotion form rookie cruiser to elite, not just three points for a 12 day cruise in CC above but 6 points for one cruise, 12 points for a back to back!? If one were to speculate on the explosion of members achieving elite status together with the Eclipse introduction of vouchers it is difficult to imagine a ship with nothing but elites except for a few first time cruisers.

Imagine a shipfull of elites all getting special breakfast, coffees, smoothies, preferential table assignments, tendering and boarding?

Elite Member Benefits

Our aim is to ensure that each and every cruise experience offers you all the recognition and rewards you so richly deserve.

That means unprecedented levels of service, access and perks.

For those interested in a quiet haven of their own, Celebrity is pleased to offer the Captain's Club Lounge, exclusively for Elite members and their stateroom/suite companions each morning and early evening. This lounge offers a casual coffeehouse-style experience in the morning, with complimentary espressos, teas and other menu items, along with a variety of reading materials. Captain's Club Elite members and their stateroom/suite companions can return to the Lounge in the evening to enjoy socializing with fellow members, participate in a wine tasting event, or simply relax and enjoy a quiet, complimentary drink before dinner.

So come aboard, and see how much your loyalty means to us.”

The rewording of this description must be imminent.

When everyone is elite, no one is.... as that famous line goes. “We are all unique, just like everyone else.”

We are now at sea for two days heading for Koper Slovenia. The weather is warm, windy, overcast and humid and the ship has lots of motion. For the first time since boarding we had a full breakfast in Blu so that we could skip lunch and not have to fight the full passenger load in the Seaside cafe or MDR. At 11:00 am there was a raffle for a free 19.95 dollar watch set and seemingly all 10,000 people on board crowded into the conference center. Anyone not standing in the front row could not even look at the watches on display. I saw one lady who, within seconds, had at least 20 boxed sets in her arms, sight unseen fighting her way out to the cashier. Since we were 9,999th in line, I could not even see what potential deal I missed.

Trivia question of the day: Lesotho is to South Africa as San Marino is to a) Spain b) Italy c) Luxembourg. Answer: Luxembourg but since no one picked that choice, everyone was wrong. During the Trivia at 10:00 Captain Pagonis made his daily long announcement followed by translations into three more languages. I finally saw the value of having questions on a screen to be read out by the staff so that the overhead speaker interruption could be (almost) ignored. Dancing with the Officers will be held tonight in the Grand Foyer at 11:30 pm. I wonder if any of the hump cabins are subjected to loud music at that time.

There is still no information available about any potential voucher program on Reflection but a passenger with connections on Millennium stated that the program would soon be introduced there. Note the wording in the quote above: “simply relax and enjoy a quiet, complimentary drink before dinner” I wonder if there is any significance to the “quiet” drink. Does that mean no clinking of ice in our glass? No talking? No music? Or no demands for a refill?

This ship was full so that the standard response of moving us is just wasted phone time.

As others have stated, this is a known problem beneath the tread mills and a warning should be issued. GTY choice is that... they can't sell em so they fill them with special offers.

We will move down one deck to CC class next cruise and we will move into the MDR

There has been no comment at all about the Eclipse voucher system and when or if it will reach Reflection.

The ship is beautiful but I have a long history of not liking this design as much as M-class. I picked this "hair shirt" so I have to live with the pain and anguish... ;) but it's nice having the ability to cruise in the lapse of luxury even though not being 100% satisfied just like my quote.

Sorry to hear of your frustrations. Hope you and Joanne are well. Certainly looks to me as if they are moving toward a new tier and this might be another indication. Might want to give people an opportunity to "move up". Of course I'm just guessing. We are finally leaving for Florida today and off to Rome in two weeks to meet Silhouette.

BLU is a concern of mine as well. Our sailing over New Year's on the Reflection will be our first time in a AQ cabin. Typically we dine in a specialty restaurant each evening, but after reading many reports from people pleased with BLU on other ships (virtually zero wait times at all hours as well as enjoyable meals), we decided to just go that route for this sailing. Time will tell!!!

Or Europe '13 isn't selling?

Xellent, sorry you a disappointed with the Reflection, hope things improve on your upcoming voyages.

Just one question, what time are you eating dinner in Blu? We have in the past tried to avoid the "late seating" rush by arriving between 7:45 and 8:15. Thanks

Hi Arno, you mentioned having breakfast in Tuscan Grill earlier? Was this where they had the Elite breakfast set up or do they have it in the Captain's Club? I am worried about the added AQ cabins and experience in Blu being rushed and it seems that is the case when the ship is full :(

bingo !! :D There have been an abnormal amount of heavy promotions for 2013 Europe sailings over the past 4-5- weeks....and we're still some ways away.

Clearly, the adavance bookings for europe 2013 are disappointing for the bean counters and marketing folks in Miami.

Cheers

Also, their internet is crazy expensive, just like guests... I've never understood that...!

Until RCCL change their fleet Satellite communications provider to one with better and stronger coverage (more expensive) the internet and tv outages will continue forever.:(
