GREASE - Keep your children away

Recommended Posts

Really???

For a long time, studies showed no link between cigarette smoking and breast cancer. But in recent years, more studies have shown that heavy smoking over a long-time is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. In some studies, the risk was highest in certain groups, such as women who started smoking before they had their first child. The 2014 US Surgeon General’s report on smoking concluded that there is “suggestive but not sufficient” evidence that smoking increases the risk of breast cancer.

First off, Grease is not a brand-new-to-the-ship production. There was a movie version of it AND more recently a "live" production of the musical. There is plenty of information out there if you bother to do a little research and not expect everyone else to be the thought police.

While removing the smoking *might* not change anything about the substance of the play, it *would* get them a hefty fine and likely the inability to license any future plays for their ships. When you sign contracts to put on plays such as this, you sign onto the entire play as staged.

In all likelihood they are either using e-cigarettes or clove cigarettes - as pretty much any Broadway (or Off-Broadway, etc.) does in production.

I will say that most Broadway shows that include it have a sign outside the doors to the theatre stating that smoking and/or smoke effects will be used in the play. (Ditto strobe lights, gunshots, etc.) So I'm a bit surprised that RCCL doesn't.

HOWEVER, it is your responsibility as a parent to research the shows you are taking your children to see and decide if you want them to be exposed to whatever is happening in it - it is NOT the responsibility of the production team to dumb down the show for your precious snowflake (who I can guarantee you has seen at least that if not worse unless you homeschool them and they never go anywhere without you hovering 6 inches away).

(Just a hint if any ship decided to put on Spring Awakening or it comes on tour close to you. The song is NOT called "Totally Stuck" as they performed it. And it has VERY adult themes in it. Cannot tell you how many times when seeing it I encountered angry parents who based going on the clips they saw on tv shows (where things were highly cleaned up) and chose to ignore the very present warning about it.)

(Oh yes. And Avenue Q is NOT "just like Sesame Street. You're welcome.)

I am going to have to cancel this cruise now, would not want to expose my daughter to it.

How inconsiderate of RC, they better not make that fleetwide;)

I wish they would offer it.....one of the very few thinks DH liked about PCL was popcorn at the outside pool movies ... Just hoping HOTS would start a new trend of it being offered on RCI ships ;)

I believe non-smoking version will not change anything on the show. You do not be "rebel" only by smoking.

And if you really believe that smoking is the main topic of this show, this means i am right about complaining. Its not suitable for a cruise ship. What will happen next? Creating a show from a porn movie? (Our children will see it anyway from web, night time tv, etc., so its not problem)

Sorry, Diamond but that analogy just does not work...comparing smoking to porn. I am a senior citizen and not a prude by by any means, and I can honestly say that other than a Playboy magazine and maybe a few nude scenes in movies, I have never been exposed to "porn". I think you are totally over-reacting. BTW, we have pretty strict smoking laws/bans here in the USA and they are getting more rigid all the time. Your country is not unique in that. In reference to your comment about many here "supporting smoking". I see that English is not your first language which is fine, but I think maybe your English comprehension needs some work. No one here is supporting smoking.

This was a morning show and there were many kids inside.

This doesn't answer the question asked. One can see an R rated movie first thing in the morning, as easily a something rated G (actually - much easier. Nothing is rated G anymore.)

Parents don't think twice to bringing their little angels to age-inappropriate entertainment. I sat in the front row next to two girls less than 10 years old to see Anthem's "We Will Rock You" - a show specifically stated for adult audiences. I felt sorry for the male dancer thrusting his pelvis in the young girls' faces; I actually felt a little uncomfortable with it, but the parents didn't seem to mind.

I understand that you felt smoking was inappropriate - but, there are many other things that are inappropriate in that show (which others have already mentioned). People likely remember the songs and romantic story (which isn't so romantic when you consider the female character feels like she needs to put out and dress like a tramp to keep her guy). People don't remember the rest of the story - which, as a parent, shouldn't be an excuse.

Oh Lord.....now you are making a few depictions of smoking in a 50's era play to porn?!

I can appreciate you are protecting your children but it may be easier to stick them in a closet. This play is bringing forth a point in time which was done very well!

If your values means smoking as negative your children will pick it up but your naive hypersensitivity is verging on the ridiculous. It's a fun play for goodness sake.

And yes we all know that smoking is a carcinogenic fact.....lighten up!

OP, you ordered a drink? Why would you subject yourself and your children to drunkenness and liver damage? Even if you ordered a soda, don't you know how bad that is to your body?

To the popcorn people........I asked our CD, Abe why Royal does not have popcorn? His reply..........."We don't want to ruin our beautiful carpeting/floors"

OP, you should take the kids to see Book of Mormon. That show is much more milder than Grease.

It also has a very catchy score. The song "Hasa Diga Eebowai", is one that stands out to me.

Lol. Could you imagine the outrage if they ever put that show on a ship? I know, it would never happen.

I am now on the maiden voyage of Harmony Of The Seas and just seen the show Grease.

I am very much suprised that Royalcaribben sold this show to tobacco companies and created it like a smoking advertisement for teenagers. Several times (i counted more than 6) players are smoking real cigarette on the stage and showing this as a nature of being adult.

Here in Europe, its mostly forbidden to advertise tobacco material. But i see that big tobacco companies found their way of advertesing in Europe by entering to cruise ship shows where all age groups are able to see it. In my opinion, these scenes are easily can be adapted to a non-smoking version, but its very clear that company did not want it, or did not care about it.

So, the managers and workers of RCCL is free to tell their children that its a normal habit to smoke, but i strongly advice everybody to keep their children away of this show if you do not want them to be a smoker in future and live long.

And just another question of this situation, is it allowed to smoke on Royal Theater?

I am one of the biggest smoking critics in the world. I chastise and admonish people for it all the time. I had some legendary screaming matches with my mother on her selfishness and refusal to consider that there are other people in the house.

That being said...

This might be the most ridiculous post I've ever seen on CC.

I believe its also our job to protect NOT-well-parented kids. I am a young person, hope i have many more years to live, i want a better world for me and my children (even if i do not have yet).

Why don't you have some kids yourself before you go judging whether other people are raising "well-parented kids" or not. There are many themes in GREASE and smoking would not be among the top three that I would bring up as a topic of conversation with my child.

Somehow I missed the part where they said they didn't even have kids. That's makes the op even more ridiculous. I laugh at people without children telling parents what they should and shouldn't do.

Also, don't take your kid to Johnny Rockets. They'll get fat and die of heart disease.

Skip Starbucks and Cups and Scoops too.

So many bad habits can start on a cruise ship.

To OP

I think you would be amazed at a childs observation of any event in life, like what you mentioned the smoking in the play.

But, they will see it and then find something else to focus on ---tight clothes, hair styles.

Kids will be kids and I can only hope mine do not pick up bad habits.

But, we need to expose them to the real world, not a sheltered bubble.

Be safe.

You do not need to scream to me. I was not the one judging whether other people are raising "well-parented kids" or not.

Please have an idea about discussion before judging me.

OP - It is nice that you are concerned about your impressionable children, but I suspect your concerns are over blown.

I hope you enjoyed the other aspects of the show ( singing, dancing, costuming) and enjoyed the cruise. By the way, if you are on a ship that is performing Chicago, I recommend that you skip it.

Effect of Turkey's Smoking laws:

The sales of outdoor heaters have increased because entertainment venues provide heated outdoor seating for smokers.

In July 2009 a customer shot and killed the owner of a restaurant in the southwestern town of Saruhanli because he was angry that his cigarettes had been confiscated.

A member of the state media watchdog commented on the television blurring in 2010: "Hülya Alphas said the blurring effect being employed so frequently works against the ban because it increases attention attracted to smoking by disrupting the concentration of viewers.

So OP do you stay inside all day so you don't witness smoking?

I am not screaming at anyone, the words I bolded were yours, not mine. You are the one who feels it is "our job to protect NOT well parented kids". I do not parent other people's kids, I take care of my own.

Feel free to warn as many people as you want about the dangers of smoking but I will keep an open mind and understand that my kid has been raised to understand what is good and bad in the world and can make his own judgement.
