Rare ReneeFLL Posted May 22, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 22, 2018 I'm looking at some cabins on the Radiance class ships. The ones I'm looking at are next to the elevators that face the water. These are the cabin numbers - 7094 7108 8088 8102 9078 9092 It looks like these balconies are larger than most. Is there any noise from the elevators or any other concerns I should be worried about? Thanks
Ashland Posted May 22, 2018 #2 Share Posted May 22, 2018 It's certainly not the elevators that will have any noise associated with the close and convenient midship location...it's the noise that may come from the Centrum in the evenings...doesn't bother some, but may other's. As far as deck choice...I prefer deck #9.

As far as deck choice...I prefer deck #9. On the Serenade they do shut the security doors from the Centrum to the cabin area around 10pm. That cuts down on a lot of noise. molly361 Posted May 22, 2018 #4 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Had 8088 once. NEVER AGAIN. Lots of Centrum noise. We now always make sure and book a cabin on that class at least 7 down from the Centrum. If you are a late night person I guess you would be okay.

Clarea Posted May 22, 2018 #7 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Another issue with staterooms near the centrum is smoke from the casino. Sometimes the centrum acts as a cigarette smoke distributuon system. I agree with Ellen that it's best to stay away from the first few staterooms nearest the centrum.
Rare ReneeFLL Posted May 22, 2018 Author #8 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Bob, what about cabins on the starboard side such as 7592, 7594, and 7608? There looks like there is a partition/wall that might help with the noise and smoke?
Clarea Posted May 22, 2018 #9 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Bob, what about cabins on the starboard side such as 7592, 7594, and 7608? There looks like there is a partition/wall that might help with the noise and smoke? There is a wall there and I think it would help if they kept the hallway doors closed, but they are not always closed. Note that the smoke situation is not bad all the time. I don't know the conditions that make the smoke travel up the centrum, but sometimes I can't smell it at all, and other times it's very noticeable. Pstreet12 Posted May 22, 2018 #11 Share Posted May 22, 2018 They do close the doors; however, they don't stay closed. People going in and out "re prop" them open, and they stay that way. I spent night after night marching down to re-close the door. I complained time after time; of course, it did no good. They can't station a crew member by each door to re-close it after guests re-prop it open. I would never again consider a cabin less than 4 from the door. OfTheSeasCruiser Posted May 22, 2018 #12 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Had a great experience in 8102 on Radiance. Would gladly book again. We never had issues with noise, but we don't go to bed too early.
MiniChunks Posted May 22, 2018 #13 Share Posted May 22, 2018 Just got off Jewel Sunday in cabin 8594. Even with the fire doors closed, i could still hear the music from the centrum in the hall outside the room, but once i was in my room with the door closed it was silent. As you got closer to 8588 it got louder in the hallway, but i was never in that cabin to observe the noise from inside. Bob mentioned smoke from the casino being a problem. The only time I smelled smoke in our hallway was on one of the days where the weather was not great. I'm assuming the casino turned into a smoking lounge and the smell was still quite strong all the way up to deck 12.

Remember, from our experience, with the safety doors closed, Paxs have to get in/out and these doors make noise especially when they close. Rala Posted May 22, 2018 #15 Share Posted May 22, 2018 FWIW, We have sailed several times in Cabin #9576 (larger balcony and very convenient location) and never heard any noise. However, I heard that the sound system for music, etc. from the Centrum was upgraded a few years ago (since we sailed in 9576) and that the noise in that area has also been upgraded, so to speak. Too bad...we loved cabin #9576. Anyone been in a cabin in that area recently? :)

This re-enforces my exact experience last year when I posted a review and a mini-study on Radiance Class centrum noise. I can't find that thread, but I re-posted a portion of it on my current roll call here https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=55703450&highlight=Centrum+noise#post55703450 Centrum noise is the loudest at the cabins on port side closest to the elevators as there's zero blocking any noise. Noise is much less of an issue on the starboard side as you go down the hallway either way away from cabin 9580/8588/7596 Standing at the opening of the port side hallway to cabins 9078/8088/7094 to me was almost equal to being at the edge of the railing with the full booming of the 70's party, etc right there
2Long2NxtCrz Posted May 24, 2018 #17 Share Posted May 24, 2018 We sailed on Brilliance May 2017 for a Med cruise in cabin 9078 and yes, it could be noisy, especially with the door open. After closing the door the noise was not bad to us. We didn't have problems with smoke, either (and my husband is super sensitive to smoke). The thing is, we loved our huge balcony and we were usually up until at least midnight, so didn't actually have trouble with the noise. We generally sleep soundly once we fall asleep (which is a good thing because hubby snores) so it all depends on the cruiser. We loved the room's location and convenience and especially loved that we got to enjoy whatever was going on down stairs with just a few steps outside my door. For us the pros outweighed any cons. And there are always ear plugs. ;p
NEWLKAT Posted May 24, 2018 #18 Share Posted May 24, 2018 I have been in 7598 and 7600 and am going to be in 9584 next month all rooms on Radiance of the Seas in Alaska, what I like about the starboard center humps is even though they are not overly large balconies compared to the ones you are looking at, they in my opinion have the best views ( with the exception of maybe an aft cabin). You can see both ends of the ship forward and aft and you are not over lifeboat covers so you have views strait down to the water. They also have a wall that seems to block some of the noise from the Centrum on my upcoming cruise 9076 is available and I contemplated moving for port side with a bigger balcony, but I was worried about the noise factor and trying to have to look around the hump to see aft of the ship, I really like the views center hump :)

taglovestocruise Posted May 24, 2018 #23 Share Posted May 24, 2018 We have stayed in 9092 on Radiance. Worst cabin ever. Extra cabin length is a steel walled cave that is cold and shady. The cabin door is on the corner next to the foyer and also 4 feet from the stairs. Never heard noise from the centrum or the outside elevator. The cabins on the forward side of the elevators would at least be away from the stairway, and the starboard side would have much more privacy. I have it in my head that there were always people standing around the stairs as I opened the door. Some people could care less but I am so picky that a GTY is no go. JohnGc Posted May 25, 2018 #25 Share Posted May 25, 2018 We were in Cabin 9068 just down the hall, very nice and quiet and fairly close to library & lifts. Port side was good as there is no cabin door opposite. Found the balcony ideal for two people. Would definitely pick this cabin again. John.
