Biggest mistake on the Royal Class

I like the Royal class ships but as much as the Horizon Terrace is a great space I miss the wake pools. I agree Princess Live isn’t great . Last thing is the Vista Lounge, tables are way to small . Not sure why they got rid of the bar that is normally in there .....

A significant omission to me on the Royal/Regal is the lack of anywhere, inside or outside, to get a forward view unless you purchase the Sanctuary. Exacerbating the problem is a general lack of good outside viewing locations for the number of passengers on board. While probably not a problem for some cruises, these ships would not be a good choice for a sightseeing cruises such as Alaska or Chilean fjords.

Wayne, no need to view the ocean, you should be down in the casino or various stores to buy watches.

I have to agree about the covered pool...what's a pool when it's inside

Separate dining....Hmmm Titanic class levels come to mind

Larger balconies...how much wider could they expand the ship to accommodate 50 sq ft balconies to make everyone happy. I guess to accommodate the hammocks, laundry lines, grills, pools and whatever else can be brought

Full promenade deck...make the runners and joggers happy, not on the top deck, but on Deck 7...add to the same width of the upper balconies. Then make a new deck for people who want to sit and enjoy the views, without the sound of "coming through, slap, slap, slap of the running shoes, and the risk of being knocked over when walking.

I'm a walker and the most annoying thing on the Promenade deck are people who congregate in the middle of the walkway chatting. Then there's a certain group who walk arm-in-arm going 3 and sometimes 4 across taking up the whole deck. There's certainly some lack of common sense used on the ship, especially those walking in front of you and they come to a dead stop and I almost plow into them.

So is the Promenade Deck not like this on other Princess ships? I will be on the Island Princess, our first time on Princess, and I was just wondering. I have always liked walking on the Promenade deck on other cruise lines, but the area for walking was just part of the whole width of the deck. People would stand at the railing and people would sit in chairs, and people would walk, all in the same area. I liked it for the shade and being closer to the water. Hardly any of them let me walk around the ship at the bow, but I could at the stern. I always liked to see the wake of the ship closer up.

On Royal Caribbean's Oasis class, there is a walking/jogging track on the lifeboat deck that is two lanes, one for joggers and one for walkers. On the Harmony and I guess on their other new big ships, they added a decent size area with lounge chairs to sit and watch the ocean, off the jogging/walking track.

IMHO, Princess destroyed the Island when they got rid of the Vista Lounge and converted that whole section into cabins. You can no longer walk clear around the ship, you have to go through the doors, walk across and go out the other side. Very annoying. Princess was going to do the same with the Coral and they got a lot of flack from cruisers about it - including me. We're on the Coral in November. I enjoy walking clear around the ship - I walk for about 1 hour - 12 laps.

FYI----On the Royal class ships there is a nice circular track. It is divided into a lane for walkers and a lane for runners and has room beside it for people who want to stop and get out of the way of those walking and running. If you want a place to walk or run that is protected from the weather there are a lot of treadmills in the gym. Either of these options, if used, will result in no hard feelings between walkers/runners and the majority of passengers who enjoy the promenade deck for other uses.

We will admit to liking a covered pool (or at least one with a movable roof like on the Grand) as an option. Why? Because we enjoy long sea days sitting in a lounger near a pool and quietly reading our books and socializing. The lack of a covered pool becomes a real negative in bad or cold weather.

There hasn’t been a covered pool built on any Princess ship in over a decade. Probably longer. There hasn’t been a true walk-around Promenade deck since then either. Maybe new ships will have a separate dining room for Club Class but that’s not something Princess should retrofit on all ships.

Majestic Princess has a covered pool. They covered the forward Retreat Pool and renamed it the Hollywood Pool Club.

So, there should be no promenading on the Promenade Deck...

We have been on both the Royal and Regal Princess. There are many excellent features into this class and I would certainly recommend them.

But like any class, there is room for improvement.

A) Lack of a true walk around Promenade Deck.

B) Separate dining room for Club Class.

C) Bigger balconies.

But the greatest deficiency is the lack of a covered swimming pool.

The Majestic Princess has a covered pool called the "Hollywood Beach Club".....we like the Royal class ships the way they are and the Promenade Deck issue is probably a Dead Horse.....:)

When I booked the Sky inaugural cruise for Oct 2019 there is an option to book Oceanview staterooms. :)

There are six forward facing OV cabins on Deck 17 in front of the Retreat Pool. Plus two Window Suites. For that they get a whole booking category to itself.

And then there's shipboard etiquette.

IMHO, the only real problem with the Royal class ships is the lack of oceanview cabins. For many, this narrows their cabin type choice to inside or balcony. Big price difference with nothing in-between.

The price difference can fluctuate wildly for different sailings of the same itinerary, or even from week-to-week for the same cruise. I have seen the difference between the lowest priced inside cabin and a balcony guarantee be as little as $6 or $7/pp/pd. Usually an obstructed balcony but sometimes even an unobstructed. This is the case right now for the Regal November repo from NY to FL which I am watching with the (unfortunately decreasing) small hope I can shake the time free.

Of course I have also seen Royal/Regal cruises where the first category sold out was the obstructed balconies which confirms the thought that there are plenty of us more than satisfied with the most basic cabin that allows some natural light in.
