Has anyone here heard IF Carnival will jump on the 'Ban the plastic straw' bandwagon

I was on the Paradise in July and got plastic straws with every drink ordered - mostly margaritas (on the rocks, not frozen). I had heard before sailing that they wouldn't be giving straws unless requested, but I never asked and received one with every order.

Try drinking a McDonald's shake with a paper straw. Or for that matter, any frozen drink. Paper straws collapse.

Maybe it’s time to give up the milkshakes then. Seriously, how many plastic straws do you think get thrown in the garbage every-single-day. We need to start taking this seriously, just like plastic bags.

You must be joking or have not studied enough and just believe in what certain people tell you. Look at science facts. now since you seem so sensitive about the environment you should not be cruising as this article will tell you. I got a good laugh out of it but I'm sure you will never cruise again.

Kind of like the hollywood stars flying all over the place with jet fuel everywhere and then preaching to us about the environment. Plenty of hypocrites in hollywood and throw left handed if you know what I mean. By the way to the other poster Mcdonalds does not have a limit on straws you can take so not stealing.

as a restaurant owner, it is absolutely stealing. You are offered a straw for your drink. So you think it's ok to "steal" creamers, jellies, or sugar packets? They are offered for free on your table. Why not take the salt and pepper shakers, which people do. No, you are stealing, creamer is for coffee, not for your kid to drink shooters out of. The jelly is for your toast, and the sugar is for your coffee. None of it is to take home.

Plastic straws need to be banned the world over. I can’t imagine paper straws cost anymore to make.

Actually ive read that the paper staws cost 3 X more to make, maybe they just arent set up to make them, idk.

also most of the plastic in our oceans is washed in from Asia, not from the USA.

I am completely baffled why people concentrate so much on straws when Im buying carbonate flavored water which uses so much more plastic than a straw.

But actually yes the paper straws do cost more to make.

Id like to cut down on plastic myself, though i send it to be recycled here. It just seems to me that we use so much plastic a straw is the least of the pastic to worry about. I need a way to buy my water in bottles i can recycle and no im not buying my own soda stream to make at home myself ...their flavors stink.

The plastic bags came from hysteria in the 80’s of how baaaad paper bags were, so every supermarket switched to plastic bags...so stupid considering trees for bags and packaging are sustainable. The real problem is plastic water bottles, but no one will give those up unless it’s financially viable, but let’s continue working from small to large, so sad.

"

Wish it was only 3X the price. I pay $10 for 3000 plastic straws, it's about $12 for 200 paper straws.

I saw your post above that only 2 companies make these paper straws and were gouging the people buying them

sorry, if i misquoted and they cost even more than 3 X more... ive just seen them discussed and that the paper straws cost so much more and that the pastic in the ocean is rolling in from Asia. Most communities recycle plastic. Make something else with what i put in my recycling bin.

Anyway, my pt was its not straws clogging up the ocean, its waste from china etc, And plastic bottles is such a bigger issue, that all this making a big deal about straws is nuts.

Lets make everyone use paper cartons for water and juice and stuff lol.

But i believe you, if you say you own a restaurant and the cost for paper straws that hardly work are more than what i heared reported.

tbh i found my cruising purse and it still has one or two straws left over in it i can use this next cruise. omg. i must have stolen them my last cruise, Carnival used to set them out on the bar and you could take one, and id take one because i like using them. sometimes i wasnt around a bar, so i usually put 1 or 2 extra in my cruise purse so id have one if i wanted it. I will be sure not to throw them away, hahahaha. so i can use them in Nov.

Just go buy a reuseable straw for your wife as a cruise present. Goggle it and there are tons of options. Straws are bad and people let them blow away right into the ocean.

I have been scuba diving, boating and picking up trash in the oceans the vast majority of my life and not once, have I found a straw in the ocean. Or lakes. Or ponds. Or rivers. Tons of cigarette butts, plastic bags, soda and beer cans, tires, and even a few cars, but not one single straw. If you want to save the oceans, tell all the stores around the world to stop tossing everything you buy into a small plastic bag. Those wreck far more havoc on our oceans than straws ever will.

For the record, they are not alone. Areas of Florida do not give them with drinks anymore, my guess is they sis not use you as an authority in making the decision.

Thanks for posting it for the silly "we're helping by not using straws" bunch. If every little bit matters to you, you would not be cruising at all. There is also more than that article says. The amount of food waste is astronomic. The garbage contribution is also huge. People will choose bottled water because of some convenience factor, and those go straight in the trash.

They left out all the Dihydrogen Monoxide dumped into the water.

On Dream a couple weeks ago it seemed to depend on the bar/bartender. It seemed like the lido bars and comedy club always gave them out. Alchemy almost never but they were behind the bar. Casino and atrium almost never but they were behind the bar.

It’s really silly unless carnival is dumping them into the ocean. But if they can sell people on it, they can save a lot of money on straws.

Do not think they have to sell anything. It is their ballgame.

Straws make up such a miniscule portion of the plastics worldwide, all you accomplish by banning them is make yourself feel better.

That said, straws were paper when I was young and they seemed to work fine, so using a renewable resource like paper isn't a bad idea.

If they do, I will be bringing my own straws. I’m totally for saving the environment, but you’ll never take straws away from me. There are straws that are 100% compostable that look and feel just like the regular plastic straws (they are not made from paper). Legal Seafoods is one place that has already switched to them. I don’t understand why more places don’t do the same.

I personally don’t use straws at home, except when I make my own frozen smoothies (hard to drink that type of beverage without). But when I’m at a restaurant or other public venue, it just personally makes me feel better to use a straw. I know, I’m using a fork, so what’s the difference, but there you go.

If they can get people to buy in and not use straws or reuse straws they’re going to save money. Just like the fast food places that make you ask for ketchup with your fries instead of automatically giving it to you. If they get some people to buy in they’ll save money...even if I take a straw every time...and I will.

Well I guess you will show them. It is your vacation after all. My point was that they have made nothing mandatory. You simply ask and you get a straw. No harm no fowl. Maybe, just maybe they are taking the high road. Money they will save in insubstantial and meaningless.

Carnival Cruise Line:The line has stopped placing plastic straws in glasses when drinks are ordered.

"We will no longer automatically serve any soda or cocktail (except frozen) with a plastic straw," Carnival's brand ambassador John Heald said on hisFacebook pagein April. "They will be provided by request. If you want one, please ask. Please support our efforts to limit the amount of plastic that can be found in the seas today

My questions is this: Does Carnival, or any other cruise line, throw garbage of any kind in the seas? How do the straws end up there if the cruise lines are not throwing them overboard?

I can bring my own straw, and usually bring either a Yeti cup or a Tervis tumbler, so I have my own straw. But I am really curious with this statement.
