The”show” is spilling out of Eden

Lots of places to go on Edge. It is a huge ship with many public places like for example The Club.   Eden is beautiful and does not run the show at all hours so just don't go there during show hours if you dislike it.  Yes The Club is no Sky Lounge direct equivalent as it has no forward view.   But Edge was built that way from the beginning so it is not really a takeaway, just a difference.  You must have known about that before booking your cruise on Edge since you frequent these boards and post often.

The Club for our cruise was deserted and no wine service until they started entertainment in there late at night.  You would not go there during the day as it is dark and uninviting.  In the evenings you are looking for entertainment venues and things to do.  You are a captive audience.  Too bad they took all of the good areas of the ship out.  They built the Edge to maximize shareholder profits, not maximize the cruise experience.  Pack more cabins in and get rid of the Sky Lounge.  I don't gamble so the casino bar is also not on my list.

If I had known now what I know about the Edge I would not have booked.  I joined the board after my cruise.  If I had looked at the average Cruise Critic rating for the Edge I would not have booked.  My mistake.  The Cruise Critic community rates the S class ships higher and I would agree.  S class ships have a quiet and more relaxed experience.

My DH and I look forward to someday going on the Edge, when maybe the prices come down. It looks beautiful and different and intriguing. We LOVE live theater, and at least for me, if it's quirky and unusual, I usually love it (big Fringe Festival fan).

Cruise lines, like all businesses, need to change with the times to stay profitable and attract new clientele.

Does the Eden show still use the incense “smoke”?  I haven’t heard any comments about that lately and it used to be a common complaint.

Also, in Eden when the “show” is not performing, do they have live music (guitar player or classical duo) ?  It sounds like it would be a wonderful place to hang out for a quieter evening than the Grand Plaza.

When the Eden show is not performing in the evening there are other shows.  We had a Johnny Cash singer in there.  It is definitely NOT a quiet spot in the evenings.  We never did find the quiet place to hang out on the Edge.  S class has many quiet places to hang out and have conversations with other guests.

I really do not fancy the whole Eden (in the evening) concept at all and the thoughts of having actors coming over to us while we are eating is just such a major put off. At least we thought we could avoid Eden in the evening ....

If these performers them went on to another part of the ship while we were trying to relax and I would be really impressed (not).

In a nutshell, I hope that what is planned for Eden stays there and leaves the rest of us alone.......

You probably should avoid Disney Cruises too.

I hear there is a big mouse, a goofy dog, a princess, a pair of chipmunks' holding hands , an angry duck to name just a few who mingle with the passengers.

Seriously - I get you... I have not been on the Edge because the pools do not have walk in access along with some other reasons.  It is good to still have the older ships to sail on.

My wife and I have been on S, M, and Edge Class. We enjoy them all for different reasons, but Edge wins out for the amazing buffet, and the infinite verandas. Surprised by all the mean spirited negativity on this somewhat ancient thread. We’ve all seen so many mediocre, similar production shows on all the cruise lines, why not just enjoy the fact that a) it’s different, and b) it’s fun!  Ok, it’s not Shakespeare. So what. And it’s an extra bonus show, not a production show anyway.

Also, considering the omnipresent surveys, it wouldn’t still be there if people weren’t enjoying it.

And isn’t it a little ridiculous to have one’s opinion of the show poison your entire opinion of the cruise line?

Had an amazing time on Edge in August - the best ship we have ever been on. Thankfully, the Edenists stayed in Eden ! Didn't get the whole Eden thing to be honest and it wasn't our favourite area at any time of the day. LOVED the Magic Carpet !

Re Disney - now I LIKE Disney and to bump in to Eeyore, the Chipmunks, Tigger etc etc on a walk around the deck would make my cruise ;-)

Thank you!! And thank you for your positivity and good review of Edge. I’m super excited to be sailing on her in February and really try not to let the Negative Nellies get to me, but a loud and shouty poster or two who always have to “yuck others’ yums” can make it challenging sometimes.

You could block “loud and shouty” as he or she has nothing positive to say about Edge.

Hmmm.... so there are NO solo music acts around the ship like acoustic guitar or a small classical duo?

Of course there are,.. solo, duos..saw both on EDGE,,,very high quality.  Pool afternoons, Rooftop, Eden as per schedule, the Club..

The  various acts rotate through the venues,.. some are quiet, some lively, some loud!

Getting to know EDGE takes a bit of checking schedules, performers  and venues... 7 days is not enough!

I suppose that you could block all 499 Cruise Critic reviewers that gave the Edge a lower rating than the S Class.

Or you could listen to the reviewers and see if they aligned with your cruising style.

The Edge is a different ship.  Some give it 5 stars others 2 for an average of 3.5.  I would see which group you are in.  If you like Disney the Edge could be your ship.  If you like a lot of people around in order to be fulfilled the Edge could be your ship.

I have not seen a ship that is such a negative or positive for Cruise Critic reviews.  I figure that it is a younger vs seasoned cruiser rating.  An RCL vs Celebrity rating.  See which bin you belong to and see if it will work for you.  I like more smaller intimate venues and not the fewer venues crammed into one.  That is the reason I abondonded RCL.  That is the reason that I will not sail Edge or Apex again.

If I am annoying you with my truthful experience then I hope that you will join Cruise 5 Star (another happy to glad board) sponsored by Celebrity.

Any ship review less than a 4.0 is a joke on Celebrity.  But the Edge manages to get lower reviews.  Don't shoot the messenger.  Process the data.

Yes there are some intimate venues on the Edge during the day.  We did not find a single one on our European sailing during the evenings.  Seriously.  In the evenings you skip the pool deck as the wife has spent time on the hair,  That leaves you with Eden, Grand Foyer, and the Club.  The Club does not open until later in the evening.  So it is pretty easy to go back and forth between Eden and the Grand Foyer on the Edge.  Do you need a schedule?  No.  You just walk back and forth and see what is going on.  Of course you stop by the Club to see if anything is going on.

For our cruising style we like to go to the spa and relax.  It was more packed on sea days than S class.

I fully applaud the critic part of this board so that I can adjust my cruise and/or select a different ship.   I am fully annoyed by the happy to glad cruisers where nothing can go wrong no matter how bad it is.

If the Edge is sailing a 7 day itinerary in the Carib this is not the best itinerary either.  Geez sail down to the ABCs for 12 days or better.

While I do recognize that sailing the Carrribean could be different than the Greek Isles,  I don't think that you can get past them taking out half of the entertainment venues  and consolidating them into large LOUD and SHOUTY venues.

While I did not see the Edenists spilling into other venues I thought that the shows were silly at best.  The entertainers were highlighly skilled but the show was less than so.

For the gentleman that said that I have never said anything positive about the Edge.  LOL!  I have said that the Edge's decor is shiney and new.  It is a plus.  I have also said that the Edge boarding is a plus as well as the disembark.  I have also said that the Magic Carpet is a plus for getting off of the ship for tendinging.  Of course most of these positives can be added to the S class for minimal expense except for the Magic Carpet.  My views fully align with the reviews and polls on this board.

It is not my cup of tea and I will always prefer smaller cruise ships and better experiences.

So block me if you will.  That will work out for both of us.

The difference is the other “499” are not on here constantly harping on the same thing over and over. We all get it. You hated the Edge. (And as more people are posting positive things on here that must be annoying that they do not share your view.) People can have vastly different experiences of the exact same event - doesn’t make one wrong and the other right.

Some of us choose to be positive and find the positive side of things. Others harp on the negative and only see that. I choose positivity - that does not mean I cannot be critical, but there are positive ways to be critical and there are negative ways. Again, I choose positivity.

Hopefully you can find a nice quiet library to sail on in the future.

And there are others trying to figure out which cruise to book.  The positive and happy to glad reviews are not fair for them.  I rever the critics and not the ones that give everything 5 stars.

The Celebrity S class is my cup of tea.  Not loud and shouty.  Plus plenty of places to relax.  I also prefer the smaller ships.  BTW S class does have plenty of places to relax or read.  A definite plus in my world.

I do agree with the average Edge rating of 3.5.  Every Celebrity ship has the opportunity for negative ratings.  The Edge just have more.  I call it as I see it.

It IS possible that those rating everything 5 stars had a 5 star experience. Just because you hated it doesn’t mean those who loved it are wrong.

I read the forums more than the reviews - all too often people on the reviews fuss about weather and/or weather related changes and other things the cruiseline has no control over. Or other stuff that is personal preference that bothers some but doesn’t bother me (when I am on a balcony or at a window on a ship, I look OUT, not down...so I don’t get the whining about the lifeboats. But that is a major issue for a lot of people. Doesn’t make either me or them wrong - it is personal preference. Hence why I avoid flat-out reviews and prefer the forums.

Clearly we have different expectations and approaches to life in general and travel in specific and no matter what will not see eye to eye on this.

So why would the Edge by doomed by weather?  I suppose that it is otherwise.  There are other ships sailing the same itinerary that get higher reviews.  I suppose that the 499 reviewing Cruise Critic experts would even out.  There probably are a bunch of seasoned cruisers in that bunch.

I just don't buy into the hype and I have sailed on the ship.

I just don't get those that have not sailed the Edge that are offended by my truthful comments.

You can get a different experience depending upon your cruising style.

If you want to put the Edge on a pedestal you probably will be disappointed.

I think that they should have a post at the top of this forum that lists the truthful pluses and minuses of the Edge/Apex so that the Cruise Critic members could decide if this ship is for them.  If I was a member and knew this information when I booked Edge I would have continunued on S class and skipped Edge.  There are many others like me.

Just leave us all alone.  You are still bitter about our excursions and simply you don’t tell the truth about entertainment on Edge.  How many of us have to tell you we don’t want to hear our “loud and shouty” anymore and why are you so hell bent on ruining cruises for those who are so looking forward to their upcoming Edge cruises.  Please just go away or at least reassess what you are doing.

For S&Gs I just perused the titles and most of the ones I saw with lower ratings were something along the lines of “not for me” or “not my style”. BIG difference between that and inherent issues.

Not putting it on a pedestal. Just being open to a new experience and not going in close-minded or with pre-conceived notions. Huge difference.

And we have beaten this poor horse to death. You are never going to admit that others can have different experiences and opinions and I am never going to be close-minded based on one person’s harping over and over.

Oh I think that others can have different experiences.

The Edge just does not match my relaxed cruising style.

I do agree that the Edge is not for me and quite a few others.

I do believe that the Edge was not for the OP either.

Why would you be surprised that I agree with others that had similiar experiences on the Edge?  AKA the OP.

Why are you guys harping against the OP?  She had many relevant points.

Seasoned Celebrity cruisers are not looking for the Disney experience.  Correct me if I am wrong.  I suspect that Disney does Disney better than Celebrity.  I would not cruise Disney unless we were taking a grandkid.

I suspect that the Edge was created more for the younger and RCL type of cruisers.  Not my style, but perhaps yours.

Your excursion was messed up in Europe and now you are trying to ruin people’s upcoming cruises on Edge.  Please stop.  No complaints other than your excursions in your review including you would have rated the ship 1 or 2 stars higher withour the canceled excursion.

I might just do that. I know an apostate with a chip on their shoulder when I see one.

Well if you have sailed Edge, please tell us about the show.  I am still waiting for the plot line.  If you have not what do you base your opinions on?  The Celebrity advertising?  LOL!

Duh I lost my stick.  Duh I lost my stick.  Perhaps my expectations were a bit higher?  Sometimes you just laugh at the muff ups.

Through out all of my posts no one has been able to suggest a quiet place indoors to have a glass of wine in the evenings on Edge.  S class has 4 or more such places.  There IS a difference.  Sometimes there is a better choice of ships.  It is not a chip but a strong preference for a better experience.  Filet mignon vs hamburger.  Crystal vs Celebrity.
