Oasis cancelled the rest of their cruise: Norovirus

I just saw on the news that the Oasis of the Seas (Royal) cancelled the remainder of their cruise out of Port Canaveral. They are offering full refunds for all guests, apparently the Norovirus has struck. I am bringing a container of Clorox wipes on my cruise!!

They canceled their last port because 250 passengers and crew out of 8000 are infected. Will spend all day Saturday in port disinfecting.

I wonder if some of the crew act as if they are sick so they won't have to work.

I am an ER nurse, we use Clorox wipes all the time. Actually, the CDC recommends bleach products (Clorox is bleach) for the Norovirus. I always travel with Clorox wipes, Lysol spray, and plenty of hand sanitizer. The best prevention on a cruise is to practice good hand hygiene. So, don't get angry with the happy-happy washy-washy people. Also, do not drink the water in foreign ports, always take a bottle of water from the ship. We were on the Gem in 2016 when the Norovirus broke out. Neither DH or myself contacted virus but we did go through 2 bottles of hand sanitizer, a pack of Clorox wipes and about 1/2 can of Lysol spray. And please, if you are ever on a cruise were there is Norovirus, and you get it, listen tot eh medical team and follow the quarantine! By not doing so, you put many others at risk. There were a few on the Gem that did not initially listen! 

 

Same advice for Influenza! Yes, it's that time of the year!

Thanks I will add Lysol spray and lots of hand sanitizer to my list. We are traveling with a cancer patient, so we can't be too careful

Bleach works against norovirus, but Clorox wipes don't contain any. Regular Clorox wipes from the store do not purport to be effective against norovirus.

 

Clorox also makes a hydrogen peroxide wipe that it says is effective against norovirus. It's expensive.

 

Regular hand sanitizers like Purell are 62% alcohol and not effective against norovirus. Clorox makes a hand sanitizer that is 71% alcohol that it says is effective against norovirus.

 

There are other specialty hand sanitizers that claim to effective against norovirus. Links to them may be found at http://www.stopthestomachflu.com/. Keep in mind, however, that it's nearly impossible to prove that products work against norovirus, because norovirus is very difficult to grow in a laboratory. Researchers usually test products against other viruses that are structurally similar to noro but easier to grow, but using different surrogate viruses tends to produce different results, so it's not clear to me that extrapolating from them to noro is justified.

 

The best single thing is to wash hands thoroughly with soap and hot water immediately before eating and then touch nothing that has not been scrubbed or disinfected. This would mean washing again after serving yourself from the buffet, pulling out a chair, or handling a dining-room menu. Using a tissue or paper towel to handle anything that you must touch, or wearing disposable gloves (and removing them the way that medical workers do, without touching the outside) might be a useful precaution.

Well implying that some crew would fake being sick so they don’t  have to work. I’d hate having someone questioning my integrity if I was one of the crew who caught nirovirus.

If the cancer patient has been through chemo his/her immune system is pretty shot. You can contact the Access Department and request a deep cleaning of the rooms, especially the rugs, drapes, shower curtain, etc.

I purchased the Clorox hydrogen peroxide wipes, which state they are effective against Norovirus (with a three minute dry time) in the large container of 100 for $12 and then found them (am I allowed to say on Amazon) in a kit of 50 individual packets and storage pouch for $30.   The individual ones were very convenient but you could repack the larger ones in a well sealed baggie but be sure not to let them dry out.  I also purchased the six pack of their hand sanitizer that states its effective against noro as most are not.  

 

In addition to the excellent information from kochleffel, don't  focus exclusively on the ship and forget the airplane -the tray table, arm rests, and seat belt latch.   How many people handled that in flight magazine?  The table at the airport restaurant, etc.  Disposable gloves are inexpensive and a great idea - yes I got some odd looks wearing them in the ship casino but having been on the Crown Princess during a norovirus outbreak in Jan 2012 - I'll gladly take the questioning glances.  My DM had just turned  84 and unfortunately caught it on the second to last night of the Princess cruise, most likely from playing a slot machine-- while it is awful for anyone, it is especially dangerous in the elderly, someone with a compromised immune system, young children, etc so I try to be extra vigilant when traveling with her.   

 

Precautions and frequent use of the numerous hand sanitizers and washy washy on NCL are great but thoroughly washing your hands frequently with soap and water and not touching your face is very effective.   Healthcare institutions where proper hand hygiene is a focus have documented lower infection rates.

I buy a few things of the Lysol travel spray to go at target. 1st thing I do after putting bag down in room is go thru and spray main surfaces like the remote, door handles, railing on balcony, closet doors, light switches etc. Because the can is so tiny I put it in my clutch and spray where we sit in the buffet. And I try to never use my finger tips to hit the elevator buttons lol. Don't know if it helps but anything to help keep the germies away!

thanks; my thought as well. Most of us realize how hard the crew works for what they get and how dedicated they are. We should all have their work ethics. 

 

AS for the ship and the noro. We were on the Jewel i think it was about 3 years ago when they had a breakout the sailing before. It was, apparently pretty bad but the cruise was not cancelled. When we got to the port of embarkation we were offered a complete refund if we did not want to sail. I have no idea how many accepted. The breakout did continue to some on our cruise but very few and the precautions that were used were unbelievable. I have mixed feelings about the wipes, but think I may bring lysol this time. I have never done anything like that before. I just make sure we are careful and wash our hands constantly.

We did a cruise out of Barcelona in 2011 that had an outbreak of Noro. I think it was the Jade.  More people were affected than on the Royal ship.  The cruise went on as planned.  Of course, the crew disinfected things like the walls in our cabin.  My wife had a reaction to all the disinfectant and was sick the last few days of the cruise.  We had to ask the stewards to back off with the spray disinfectant.

And while you're at it, always wipe the area down around where you sit on the airplane. Chances are high that patient 0 on the Oasis contracted the virus from the plane or airport. Any high traffic, high density area is where Noro spreads like wildfire. It's just easier to trace an outbreak on a cruise ship because thousands of people are in one place and reporting illness to the same doctor, whereas on a plane/in an airport the same cohort is only together a few hours.
