Komodo Island to close for 1 year.

Recommended Posts

Just read an article that Komodo Island will be closed for a year from January 2020. Lizards being poached is given as the reason.

We are booked on the Pacific Explorer from Singapore and the cruise is scheduled to visit Komodo Island on the 3rd of March 2020. See: Komodo to Close

P&O still has it listed as a Port of Call.

It may take time for them to tell you that Komodo Island Being a port of call is cancelled.

Possibly it won't be cancelled as people on cruise ships don't tend to have the equipment to poach those lizards.

They might just send over a few rangers when the ships come in.

We went for a snorkel at Pink Beach Komodo Island and I am glad none of these dragons joined us as they can swim  They eat you as well

I can imagine having one of these running around your cabin and what the cabin steward would say when she opens the door to clean the cabin 😀

The plan to close is not final yet, it is still under consideration.  So because it has not happen no reason for Princess to report on it. If it is closed it may not not be closed to cruise ships. The whole Island may not be closed, as many business on it.

If the Island is closed the cruise port could be changed to Bali or Lombok. but to early to know what will happen. Easy to say close it hard to give up the money it brings in.

Also found this if it happens:  Tourists will only be banned from visiting Komodo Island, which is home to an estimated population of 1,800 Komodo dragons. They will still be able to see the dragons in other parts of Komodo National Park, including Rinca and Gili Motong islands.

Thanks for the link Expat Cruise. US$2.345 million in 2018 from park visits is a lot of $$$ to forgo.

"Viktor planned late last year to raise the park’s entrance fee to at least US$500".  Not this little cruiser.

Iguanas I can understand but a dragon doesn't fit in your carry on.

They are a bit like crocs and don't mind if the meat is a bit old.

So the dragons would be attracted by the scent of the cruising fraternity then, being mature meat.  HAL ships...stay away !! lol.🤣

Due to the dragons' acute sense of smell, particularly blood, menstruating women were warned not to book tours on the island. This was on a HAL cruise I did a few years ago.

No chance of that on some of the cruise lines.

Cheers, $100 USD is not cheap but for a once in a lifetime experience not expensive either.
