How to remember Port & Starboard

Which side of the ship is PORT & STARBOARD?

 

Referencing the bow or the front of the ship.

 

The PORT side of the SHIP is the LEFT side of the SHIP.

 

PORT has 4 letters just like the word LEFT. Easy to remember.

 

STARBOARD is simply the right side of the SHIP and just the opposite of PORT.

My learning port and starboard was easy, from the time I was a kid I used to play and watch  a lot of baseball. The announcers used to call left hand pitchers with different terms invoking the word port.

I remember hearing announcers refer to left handed pitchers as "south paws".

That too, I grew up in the 50s in Northern NJ and listened to the very colorful announcers for the Yankees, Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants.

And Port side has a red light, because Port (wine) is red.

On boats (fishing) the steering wheel is on the right side (sometimes in the center) because of the rotation of the propeller. So if you think of the captain/person driving the boat as the star, the starboard side is on the right.

The terms are usually stated "port and starboard". I rarely hear "starboard and port". Since we read left to right just associate the terms the way they are read, left-port and right-starboard.

My father felt there were three important things to teach me. 

One was port and starboard, one was forward and aft, and one I didn’t learn till I was 15. 

Let out the clutch in a car meant put your foot down on it. 

I got the nautical terms easily as a small child. 

I really struggled with understanding the clutch as a teenager.

If you are referring to reading left to right while facing the bow ow the ship, that might make sense.  But reading lift to right as you face the stern of the ship (which sometimes happens) starboard would come before port.  

 

So, in addition to readers of Arabic and Hebrew, you should add people who sometimes walk aft on a ship.

I figured common sense would dictate that this, like the original post, was using the front of the ship as a reference point. 

Apparently I needed to clarify that for some folks. 😄  Sorry about that.
 

 

This is assuming the front of the ship was the standard reference point.

You must have missed my first thread and then I did a second one on this simple bit of information. I go nailed left and right. No pun intended. It got so bad I had Cruise critic remove one and then the other. Now I just did the Port and Starboard and sill stupid information. Why can't people just leave dumb remarks to them selves?

I think many posts are just intended as good natured comments, not to be taken personally at all.  Nature of forums is you will always have unnecessarily snarky/critical comments.  

 

I've previously heard of the rule of thumb you shared and it is a pretty good one.

And to remember "bow" (rhymes with cow) -- We bow to the captain, who most often is at the front of the ship.

(Of course we don't actually bow to him/her, but this is how I remember it.)

And if we are naughty, we might be taken to the back of the ship for a "stern" lecture.

(Stern is more often called "aft" now, but aft is fairly intuitive -- "after").
