Anthem- testing 12 Chinese nationals who are onboard

I would agree 10000%. The pressure on RC must be tremendous. If they had quarantined the Anthem, there would have been thousands of cancellations. But by giving the air of normalcy, and letting passengers off, they avoided that.....

......and that is a short term gamble that, for our sake, I hope pays off.

Because if their reckless actions unleash the virus here and a bunch of people die, they are done. The lawsuits alone will kill them not to mention popular opinion.

This is very bad.

Not a cheerleader but I don't think they were being reckless.

OMG. They are letting the other passengers off the ship.

Wow. What a gamble they are taking with the NY/NJ area. So if those Chinese nationals are sick, they likely spread it. Plus crew is likely to be infected.

Highly irresponsible.

What would you suggest they do? How many travelers are coming and going via the largest airports in the US? How many are traveling in Manhattan? You can’t shut down NYC.

Look. I realize it sounds extreme, but I would have suggested keeping the passengers on the boat until they could confirm whether or not the virus is in the ship.

Putting it another way.....

Why are we quarantining people arriving from China? Because they have been in close quarters near the virus. These passengers, by virtue of circumstance of the past two weeks, are no different now.

what is the definition of chinese nationals? im assuming this means you cannot be born in the USA to chinese parents or something nor live here? i see chinese people all the time in the USA and im betting pretty many of them are US citizens. not here traveling.  so makes no sense to single out just chinese people unless you have proof of travel from the bad area of course. then again. i think all people traveling thru the area should be tested.

are non chinese people tested on such a scale as well?

A Chinese national would be a person with a Chinese passport.

They could have waited until test results came back at least.

if this spreads in NY it will be shut down!

NBCnewyork  has picked up the story. Confirmed that it is anthem of the seas where there is concern.

This news story says over 2 dozen Chinese people fleW From China to board anthem for the Jan 27 departure. Still within the 14 days they could be contagious but not showing signs.

News is saying a bunch of people are sick on the ship...   how are they going to let anyone off or on.....     what a nightmare...   STOP EATING BATS

they should keep everyone on board pending results...this is how it all started at Princess.

I’m sorry but that is beyond irresponsible. Until the 12 are diagnosed or not diagnosed you should not be allowed off.

this would NEVER happen in other ports.  RCL seems to want to act like nothing happening....if they are actually disembarking all passengers and taking on new ones another 'money grab" $$$ vs safety.

It is disturbing if passengers allowed off ship before others diagnosed, IF that is the case. Virus can be spread by those with no symptoms. The patient from Diamond Princess had not been on mainland China, but his wife had...she had no symptoms. That ship now has 61 cases. We are cruising in a few weeks. I had not been concerned, but now wonder...

I think right now the absolute worst place to be is on a ship.

My wife works for NYU hospital. She is in administration and her office is in Bellevue Hospital. The first case to hit NY was at Bellevue. My wife went to work as usual. It took 2 to 3 days before they found out it was negative. Where are you going to keep all of these travelers coming from air and sea for 3 days?

Keep them in the ship? 😞

Look, I don't claim to have a good answer. Truly. I worry it's all over NY already. A friend's cousin came from China last week, and took ill. Went to the doctor and was told there was no means with which to test him and advised him to self quarantine. Our friend's cousin said he was pretty sure no one was alerted etc. He is still sick.

I am curious--does your wife know if there is any uptick in cold/flu patients coming in?

Oceania has contacted passengers on upcoming cruises.  If they have visited China in past 30 days they do not want them on their ships and will give them a full refund.  I am not sure how they determine that unless they see a passport, but it sounds like one step in the right direction.

On the ship until they knew what they were dealing with.

An airplane is no safer either.

It is about the duration of the exposure which increases changes of contracting the virus...airplanes not good either but I will take a fixed number of hours on a plane to  continuous exposure on a ship for days at a time.

That's a good argument for not quarantining people on a cruise ship.

so much of this is self reporting....but that is a good step...have to wonder what instructions these people getting off in NJ right now were given...I think there is a large number of people especially in US that are clueless on what is happening....at minimum they should have been given a pamphlet outlining symptoms and stating they "could" have been exposed pending tests. What to do if symptoms present etc. Given the 14 day incubation period if those suspected are confirmed there are more on that ship now being dispersed all over the US and world.
