Why are cruise ships considered to be more of a risk than theme Parks?

I am upset and disappointed that cruising is being made to be the culprit in the spread of Coronavirus, but theme parks appear to be unscathed.  Why is there no mention of Disney and the other parks?  I believe there is exposure to many more people on a typical day at Disney than on a ship.

Because you are in an enclosed environment and despite "washie washie," anyone that coughs or sneezes will infect you! I get sick almost every cruise but have a stash of antibiotics. I wash my hands more than anyone. Outdoors is easily avoidable. That is why you do not hear of people getting sick from theme parks. 

Norovirus is another one you hear about. You do not hear about people getting regular respiratory illness because it is not news.

Maybe they will quit the smoking in casinos because that is where people get sick mid-cruise and pass it around. But I doubt it!

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo with 2 1/2 million visitors over three week period was halted and closed  down today , in the middle of the largest Festival on the North American Continent . The City of Houston and Harris County were behind the measure . It is probably the largest social event every year  in the City of Houston .

I don’t believe that it is possible to not be affected (or infected) by someone coughing or sneezing while waiting in a crowded line at a theme park.  And many of those lines are in an enclosed environment.  Plus the chains/ropes/dividers that direct the lines are touched by many people, particularly children.  How many people are crowded together during the Disney parades?  How could you possibly avoid the person next to you suddenly coughing or sneezing?

My concern is that cruise ships are constantly the focus of news reporting, yet there is no mention of theme parks.  Why the marked difference?

I would expect that to change to cancelled in the next few days based on the NBA

exactly. The parks literally have no hand sanitizer anywhere. 60,000 plus capacity at Magic Kingdom alone. Hand rails, ride guards, standing inches away from others in line. 
 

You can guarantee people get sick there, but are long gone before they come down with it. No one will admit it, where as on a cruise ship they can point their finger and say “see it’s a cruise ship”.

If the reports are accurate, and they certainly seem to be since they are acknowledged by the cruise lines, how is this unfair? Don't you want to know the risks? Risks of this type are always elevated in enclosed environments. Seems to be a pandemic in our country to consider truth unfair. Would you rather the information is hidden from us, as some are trying to do?

Disney isn’t the majority owner in those parks so I doubt they had any say in them shutting down.
 

They 100% control the US parks and no doubt will keep them open as long as they are able.

I’m in much closer contact with people at Disney then I ever am on a cruise. Standing in lines for hours over the course of a day, touching all the rides that aren’t wiped down. 
 

Ive no doubt there are many more people in the US that have the virus but haven’t been tested. Wouldn’t shock me at all if some of those people have been to the theme parks.

The reason is you're typically there for a day or three and then gone.  Same with restaurants, air travel, hotels, etc. Oh and don't even think about grocery cart handles! Once you get sick, you're not quite sure where you got it. 

 

When you're on a cruise, you have 3000 people in close quarters and say 200 get sick, it's a big story.  However, it's no difference than a seniors home where 200 live and 30 get sick, same with schools.  It's known that a virus is going thru the school, home, hospital, etc. but the hysteria just isn't the same. 

 

There's something about cruises, either you love them or you don't.  If you don't, it's the scourge of the earth, a petri dish and you'll get sick or fall overboard! 

 

Knock wood, I've yet to get sick on any cruise, but, generally don't get the flu as I get my shot every year, though the last one I had was 5 years ago and it was a doozy!

Getting coverage the same reason a plane crash does more than car accidents because it’s a lot of people in one place. And they can count them, the cases that is. A few years ago there was a measles outbreak tied to Disneyland and there was certainly plenty of talk about Disneyland then. So far there hasn’t been another place where so many cases happened in the same location is on a cruise ship. Also I booked one last week for April so I’m putting it in perspective!

In order for a Disney story to happen, you would have become ill at the park, go to a doctor there, and be quarantined there or keel over and die there.

 

On a cruise ship, once a percentage gets sick they have to report to the CDC. Right now if noro happened to the point of having to report the ship would be quarantined with a Covid-19 assumption.

 

Disney isn't safer, no crowded place is safe, you can't control your distance. Though hand washing is important, Covid-19 is airbourne so  safe breathing zone around yourself also becomes important.

I think it’s the quarantine that freaks everyone out and gets the media attention. If 1 person on a cruise tests positive the whole ship is quarantined in their tiny room. If 1 person at Disney tests positive, it’s later in a hospital. They don’t pull all 60k people into “It’s a small world” to quarantine them [emoji23]

I agree that Disney is not safer. Neither is Costco, Home Depot, etc. The media is just playing on peoples fear of being cooped up in a 140sf space for a couple weeks.

Because they can't track people that visit theme parks. The measles outbreak in CA last year was traced to Disneyland, but although they tracked them from the plane and to the park...they could only put out general announcements that people might have been exposed in Disneyland. And those people went on to infect others.

We went to Disney 61 times last year, and 45 times the year before,  

 

I started to get sick from someone in line at Disney one time,  went home ( yes I am a local) went to bed and was fine the next morning. 
 

been on 25 plus cruises and we clean the walls, ceiling, drapes, bathroom with Clorox wipes and lysol the room multiple times the first day and we always end up getting a sore throat or cold on a ship.  
 

we clean our hands like crazy, don’t do the buffet, and don’t touch hand rails, but we still end up getting sick. 
 

I personally think Disney especially with the new precautions and cleaning methods put in place is a much better alternative then a cruise. 
 

we love to cruise - but, we need to face it, this will change that industry for years to come. 
 

This is crisis management, and I keep asking how are they going to react, like BP or Tylenol.
