What happens to in flight cruisers if trump bans cruise travel

Curious, as I have a cruise booked that leaves in 10 day... especially after tonights announcement of suspended travel to Europe... What would happen to the thousands of people who are on a ship if/when Trump suspends all cruise travel? Would all those people be denied re-entry?

I would think they'd be allowed entry then quarentined.

First of all it is suspended travel from Europe, not to Europe.  (Although which countries are affected, other than to exclude Great Britain, have not been defined).

As to cruise suspensions, I guess we will have to wait and see what the terms and conditions are regarding that if / when it is suspended. Pointless to even speculate about something that has not yet - and may not - be defined.

But I would guess that any such ban would have an effective commencement date and period of affect that would more than likely allow for those at sea, if a US departure, to return to the port of departure first. I'm sure the concerns you express will be well thought out with any such hypothetical decision.

But again, pointless to speculate.

Agreed, pointless to speculate. HOWEVER, in April of 2010 we were locked down for 5/days in Terminal M at the Schipol Airport in Amsterdam after the Iceland Volcano event. 5,000 of us. With no luggage. Let out outside to exercise for a few minutes each day. Dutch Red Cross fed us. Just sayin'.....

Goodness. Why did they keep you there at the airport?

What I heard was 30 day suspension of all travel from Europe, with exceptions for some countries and with exemptions of US citizens subject to screening. The specific rules are just being released.  Also sounds like the ban rules will be adjusted as needed as the situation develops.

This is going to certainly be a a hassle for some and a big disappointment for some.  Let's just try to remember why it is being done.  If we all pitch in perhaps we can put this thing behind us that much sooner.

I'd question boarding a plane to Europe unless you have a solid plan for how to handle it if you can't get back for a few weeks. Although apparently England is exempt so maybe you could fly in from there.

Agree with not boarding a plane to Europe right now.   I hope folks will think about why the travel ban is in place and what needs to be accomplished.  Right now pursuing leisure travel into high risk areas seems to be kind of unwise.

Because Air Travel was banned, ie  Quarantined account airborne Ash particles would seize Jet engines. So.. those of us 'In Transit' thru Schipol were all housed in Terminal M with no luggage for 5/days account Main Airport CLOSED. Some had no Passport, money, etc. etc. Dutch Red Cross found us thousands of cots and lotsa cheese sandwiches and Coffee. T'was surreal indeed. Changed MY idea of how to travel forevermore,  Passport, US Dollars, paper Air tickets, Credit & Debit cards, soap, tooth brush, Meds and a good jacket always on my person now. This looks like a repeat, IMHO.

Good on the Dutch red cross. That was good of them to sort as much as they could.

What were they thinking packing passports in checked bag, though? When I travel my passport, license, money, and cards are on me either in my little wallet or a travel belt pretty much at all times. Especially on an airplane. If I have to do a rushed evacuation and make it off the plane I'm making sure I have options to get where I am going. Or maybe I'm the only one who's watched all the air crash investigation TV shows? They taught me don't be that idiot trying to grab a carry on out of the overhead when an evacuation is going down.

I knew about the volcano eruption and flight disruption, but was questioning why you had to stay in the airport versus going to a nearby hotel for the duration. I wasn't aware you didn't have a passport.  How does one get to Schiphol (assuming you are from US based on your location) without a passport?

I have been through a lot of travel disruptions in my traveling years, starting with the Air Traffic Controllers strike in 1981 (slept in chairs at JFK airport overnight with my parents)!

You are 'Spot On'. Here is what happened. It was quite a week. Schipol Airport is a huge 'In-transit' Airport. We came in from ROME, Italy April 15, 2010 to change planes to LaGuardia. While re-fueling/change planes etc. many thousands of travelers are separated from their luggage of course. HOWEVER, when 'In-Transit' many people leave their overhead luggage on board or on their seat and Interpol prisoners etc are segregated to the side etc etc.and new Flight Crews start arriving to replace the original ones.  Then the 'No-fly' Quarantine hit. Our checked luggage and original airplane vanished to God-knows where. I had our Passports, money-belt $Cash$, phone and Credit cards, documents, onward tickets and a ditty bag on my waist...many did not. Terminal M was cordoned off and we 5000 were ushered in, slept on the floor Nite 1. On day 2 cots and food and Embassy people were brought in. Theoretically, you could have left the Airport, but the Gate would then be closed behind you and some would legally have been persons without a country. Armed guards enforced order, and escorted us 100 at a time for exercise out near a Warehouse. The deceased and critically ill were somehow attended to. (Remember the TOM HANKS movie..'The Terminal'?? That was our predicament, all 5000 of us. Since that we NEVER let our documents etc. off our actual body when travelling; even in Hotels.  This Corona Virus thing has all the makings for a somewhat similar fiasco. Hmm.

You were flying from AMS to LGA?

Weird, I don't recall any carriers flying to LGA from AMS.  JFK, but not LGA.

There are connecting flights to just about everywhere!

Made me think of the old printed flight schedule booklets.  Technology has brought us a long way!

Pretty scary, with the Princess situation and what is happening in Italy I can't imagine and Country/port accepting a ship with 2-3 thousand people w/o 14 day quarantine, and we all saw how the 14 days went on the Diamond.

With outbreaks in almost every country and that is people who got sick and got tested the number of asymptomatic transmitters is likely 100-1000x those that have it right now, who then get symptoms.  Hard to believe a few of them aren't on every ship that set sail in the last week and half,  lots of walking wounded that dont' know it yet.  Lots of reasons most countries will deny docking.

Assume you dock and then wait 14 days and are clean, likely your home country situation could be worse and be banned to even return home.

Really like a bad science fiction movie, any one remember World War Z or Contagion, OMG

+1.  I won't need to rummage around looking for my passport, wallet, phone if an emergency evacuation is required because they are on my person or in a small Pacsafe cross body bag in the seat pocket.  Grab and go,

In a foreign country I carry my passport, more than enough cash to get to the nearest airport and room on my credit cards to fly anywhere in the world in any class.  If the planes aren't flying I'll find the nearest hotel with a vacancy and buy what I need to wait out the delay.

I read an online article that people in Europe can't get to French Polynesia because their flight route would mean going through LAX. I am sure there are other flight routes that would be similarly affected so it will be interesting to see how airlines negotiate this new restriction.

Well my guess is that for the next 30 days they will cancel those flights or find a way to re-route them in a manner that does not have them connecting in the US.  Inconvenient and unfortunate (as are all other global travel restrictions and cancellations) but, given the current situation, for the time being necessary.

I'm seeing some reports Mexico is thinking of banning US citizens flying into the country for thirty days.

This reminds me. Anyone know what ended up happening with the lawyer and his wife who refused to evacuate that Princess ship off Japan when the government took the rest of the US citizens? Last I saw he got off with the rest of the passengers when the quarantine on the ship ended. Wondering did they let him back into the US?
