Carnival Cruise Corp stood by Australia during the bush fires: they donated $350,000. After the emergency Carnival gave firies free cruises. Now we kick out a ship owned by Carnival Corp. 😠

I believe the 3 free cruises for the first responders were donated by RC not Carnival. But Carnival's donation would have been greatly

appreciated.

OK. Whoever gave the free cruises, it was a good gesture. Maybe NSW has forgotten that the cruise companies did donate during the bushfire emergency.

As did most of the population, airlines, corporations. businesses, celebrities worldwide donate to the Australian fire appeals. Great gestures by the Carnival and RC corporations for their donation and free cruises for the Australian people.

Let's not get too excited about those free cruises.

This was a ship which was originally scheduled to be cruising in Asia.  Those cruises were cancelled, so they sent the ship to Australia.  They thought that giving a few free cruises would buy them some free publicity, and it would cost them virtually nothing as the ship had no other itineraries planned and was already fully staffed.

It was never anything more than a cynical PR exercise.

Azamara Journey has departed BNE after bunkering & storing & is bound for Benoa 12/4.

Carnival Spirit & Splendor plus Sun Princess - all on way to Gladstone to join Queen Elizabeth.

Pacific Aria has moved to anchor off Adelaide.

QM2 has departed Durban after bunkering & on way to Southampton via C.of Good Hope.

They could have sat idle elsewhere for less cost as well so do not denigrate the free cruises as a cynical PR exercise either.

They were planning on bring it down here, with the idea of bringing out new itineraries - as Princess did with the Sapphire.  The free cruises were a way of buying them some time, while they made all the arrangements (port bookings etc.) required.  Asia was closed to cruising, but Australia/NZ/South Pacific was still open, so they were hoping to make money by sailing Down Under.

Of course it was a PR exercise, first and foremost.  You're kidding yourself if you think there was any other reason behind it.

Who is kidding who, they were not planning on bringing it down here, they had to a full season of cruises throughout Asia.

Agreed, once the Asian itineraries had to be cancelled, they thought they would come down to Australia, offer a few free cruises and then maybe re-coop some money. They are a business after all, but it wasn't just PR. They could have just come down and had paid cruises which would have sold very quickly instead.

4 ? ships berthed in Cairns.

Were these three small ships added to the list of cruise ships now berthed in Australia.

This small Australian company, Coral Expeditions, was able to get all its ships safely back to Australia, and they are now all berthed in Cairns.

There cruises are to Australian destinations (the Kimberley, Tasmania, Great Barrier Reef) and areas not too far afield. It was probably pretty easy to get them into Cairns.

The company is Cairns based, so they came home.

The plan was for paid cruises. However, the freebies were interim ones that there wasn't time to arrange the overhead of sold itineraries.

For the free cruises, it was already a mad scramble for them to pull everything together and they were organising these up to departure day as it was. This was without the overhead of processing sales and billing but just managing the inventory.

They are very small ships and might not have had any overseas guests 😁. Another factor in their favour, they ended their cruises fairly in the pandemic.

This article about Kiwis trapped off the coast of Uruguay makes for interesting reading.

I can only imagine how scary it must be for all the passengers (which also includes a lot of Australians) onboard.

I imagine that even if Uruguay let’s them ashore, it could be a long time before someone can get them home.  It’s not like flights to Uruguay from NZ would be easy at the best of times.  It’s proving hard enough to get stranded kiwis in Peru home.

Neither did the Pacific Explorer. In fact I don't remember reading of any P&O ship with Covid-19 cases. Perhaps to do with their staff serving food and not self-service.

I think this has a lot to do with it.
