Aug 8 2010 Summit sailing, 7 Night Bermuda

According to the book, "The Chandris Liners and Celebrity Cruises",  Bermuda is responsible for the birth of Celebrity.  When Chandris was bidding on a contract for Bermuda sailings, the Bermuda government was only willing to award the contract to a premium cruise line.  The existing Chandris Fantasy Cruise line was targeted for the lower end market, and so Celebrity Cruises was formed (and Horizon and Zenith built) in a successful bid to win the contract which started in 1990 and continues to this day.

We did our first and only Bermuda cruise in Aug 2010.  By then Horizon and Zenith were long gone (but not forgotten) and the the classic two port itinerary was reduced to a single stop at King's Wharf because of Summit's size.

This cruise was very enjoyable although it was rivaled by the magnificent pre-cruise time we had at New York City. During our time at Bermuda, we made the obligatory pilgrimage to Horseshoe Bay Beach.  The weather, water, and sand were awesome on that day!  Even now, I can close my eyes and imagine myself back there......

Yep, it's a picture of a picture.

This was our first cruise 20 years ago on the Mercury. What a wonderful time! This was back when the dining room was fantastic. The next year we went on the Millennium and thought, "hey if the MD food is so good we should try a specialty restaurant." I can't remember the name of it, but it was very good. Then we started thinking about it, we both felt that the MD was also very good. So never again did we pay more.

@Mike981, it was named the Olympic Restaurant which was decorated with fittings from RMS Olympic, Titanic's sister ship.

That was it! I remember that two or three musicians dressed in period clothing.

Thank you Mahdnc!

March 25 2005 Horizon sailing, 10 Night Ultimate Caribbean out of Tampa

Exactly 15 years ago today we were sailing on Horizon.  It was our first extended cruise.  It was also the only Spring Break (Easter) cruise that our family has done.

Besides seeing the Easter Bunny on board the ship, it was an eventful trip as well.  Horizon was fogged in at Tampa which meant we overnighted on board at the dock and it resulted in the removal of our first stop, Grand Cayman to make up for the late start.  Then after we set sail, a passenger had to be medevaced off the ship.

And then we had our own medical crisis.  During our stop at Puerto Limon my wife suffered a bad laceration on her shin and muscle when she crashed into a tree platform edge-wise while ziplining.  By the time I arrived at the platform, there was blood everywhere.  It resembled a crime scene on TV.  We were deep into the Costa Rican forest when it happened with several zip lines still to go.  It looked like there was a good chance that we were not going to make it back to the ship on time (the tour was not set up thru Celebrity).  As precious time was being spent by the tour guides to apply first aid to stop the bleeding, I remember taking inventory of what we had and thinking about how we would make it to the next port on our own, all while a toucan was staring at me from an adjacent tree.

Well we ended up doing a few more zip lines to get to a tree ladder in the middle of the forest that allowed us to abort the trip and hike back out to the parking lot.  Our taxi driver performed a mad dash back to the port--fighting through rush hour traffic (like a scene out of the French Connection), and we made it just a few minutes before the gangway was removed from the ship.

Fortunately, my wife was in a perfect environment to recuperate—the doctor was a short elevator ride away which made the successive follow up visits a breeze and we were being well taken care of by the ship’s crew.

Horizon is known for being the first newly built ship in Celebrity’s fleet.  By the time we sailed on her, her glory days were behind her as all 3 Century class ships and all 4 Millennium class ships were now the darlings of Celebrity’s fleet.   What she lacked in size and modern design, she made up for with an excellent crew and the best ship board service we had ever experienced.  The small ship meant that, like the famous bar on Cheers, everyone knew our names.  Even the casino was kind to us.  The picture I am posting is of her docked at Roatan, Honduras.

I am adding a couple of more photos.  The first one, at first glance, looks like something you would see at a specialty restaurant.  It wasn’t as Horizon didn’t have one.  It was taken from the main dining room.  Those were the days.

The second photo is of our son and his kids club group with the ship’s master, Captain Apostolos Bouzakis, during a Fun Factory bridge tour. He may not look like it in the photo, but the Captain was a warm gentleman.   As some of you know, he has the distinction of being Equinox’s first master in 2009.  Sadly, he is no longer with us as he passed away in Aug 2017.

Oh mahdnc!!!!  Thank you for the blast from the past and the wonderful memories! Hands down, Horizon is still at the top of my favorite ships and most memorable voyages list! She may have been tiny and a little dated without bells and whistles, but she was a dignified, stately, and commanding dame in her time. Best service and crew, too!

Mahdnc, your post reminded me of a favorite funny cruise memory from that trip, too!

Colon excursion for us was a ferry boat partial canal transit. I was traveling with my best friend who had been my student teacher years before; she was hired by my district and worked with me for several years. She'd eventually moved  to administration in another part of the state and was an assistant principal at an elementary school, but we maintained a friendship and when school breaks coincided, we would cruise. When people met us on cruises, it always appeared at first that I was  outgoing and she was was quiet ...... but she was, in reality, a wild child baptist minister's daughter who could drink you under the table ;). Anyway, we were sitting on the back of the ferry that day just taking in the sights, when all of a sudden, somebody yelled, "Miss G_____!  Miss G_____!" My friend's head whipped around so fast it was not even funny..... and then she quickly grabbed my coke and pushed her beer into the spot where my coke had been! Turns out, the name caller was a student from her school! What were the odds on that happening??? !! We STILL laugh about it!

Gina,

It certainly has been a long time--15 years to be exact.  I don't know if you are doing well, but I can see you are doing a lot of cruises!

I like both of your photos--the colorful buildings in the first shot and the nice use of the curved wall which takes your eyes from the foreground to Horizon in the second.

Your story is too funny.  I never realized this until now (or I have forgotten), but we also took the same ferry through the canal.  However my family and I were seated near the front.

I also remember that we never got to meet at the CC Party because you had changed cabins and so you never got your invitation.....

I would like to think that our cruising paths will cross some day (not on different ships though because that is called a collision).

David
