I think that should read ‘vet practice’ Jane.  My niece has been qualified about 6 years now but still repaying her monster-sized student loan.  So many practices now are part of groups owned by venture capitalists and the like.  The capital costs of setting up a practice with all the state of the art equipment is astronomical.

Anyway, good that Teddy is on the mend.  What an accident that must have been!  You make me nervous for my pup’s next clip.  We met a cockapoo on our walk this morning (3/4 poo, 1/4 c0ck) whose mum clips him herself.  Hmmm?  I’ll need to think about that

The day remains unremarkable but enjoyable.  Easy lunch, which is the second half of that Raymond Blanc chicken/mustard dish I made a few weeks ago, from the freezer, and green figs and crème frâiche for dessert (sounds almost cruise worthy)

I must get around to completing the necessary form to prevent my health history potentially being up for sale.  Not sure why there’s not more general info about the plan.  When similar was proposed in 2014 every household was leafleted.  Has your practice been impacted Jane?  As if you don’t have enough to do.  I shall enclose an apology when I hand mine in

I'm sorry Eddie - I stand corrected.  I didn't think about the capital set-up costs for a veterinary practice. We, in the NHS, have lots of income streams which cover most of premises costs so I'm well out of the loop with regard to anything commercial.

I think I'll just let Teddy's fur grow out for a while before I even think about a cut again. I definitely wouldn't attempt it myself. Having said that, this incident was a pure accident which I know could happen to even the most experienced of groomers.

I totally agree about the lack of publicity regarding the medical-notes-for sale issue.  Given that total confidentiality is one of the things the NHS prides itself on, it totally goes against the grain. We have posted an in- depth explanation on our website, we have posters and forms in the waiting rooms for those to want to know more and I'm sure momentum will grow. It's just another hurdle to jump in the life of general practice.

Enjoy that lunch Eddie. Best wishes. Jane.x

Oh Jane - what a trauma for you and Teddy. The vet bills are steep, but would have been much worse if out of hours or on a Sunday.
Can you claim it back on your insurance or on the carer’s/groomer’s insurance? However I agree worth every penny as they so precious to us.

Gill x

You're so right Gill. It could have been at least double the price I paid. I'm going to call Ted's insurers tomorrow to see what the situation is but even if they aren't interested, the groomer has already said she'll pay all costs. Poor woman is still distraught.

Gill, has Freddy ever needed a cone (lampshade) collar? Ted just can't get on with it. He can't see properly, is falling up the stairs and is just generally very unhappy with it. I'm persevering because I mustn't let him lick the wound.  Jane.x

I will, for sure.  Thanks

More cuddles for Teddy.  Is he confined to the Cone of Shame?  That’s even worse

Yes! He hates it Eddie. I just posted Gill about the cone. He is so unhappy with it, he's falling asleep standing up too. Jane.x

My daughter is a Vet nurse. She went to Uni and got a 2.1 degree, went to work for Waterstones but hated it. Retrained and qualified 15 years ago. She has just changed jobs and is now earning 10% more than minimum wage for the first time.  I have always had a cat but after a huge vet bill for my last one and the insurance company arguing over paying most of it, I decided not to take up insurance for my new cat. I opened a Post Office savings account for her, have a standing order for £50 a month and it has now nearly £2k in and I don’t have to worry about her bills.

I think the “vet fund” is a great idea

My pup is on Pet Plan just now - in case it turned out that we had, literally, ‘bought a pup’ and had a house-mate who would need lifelong medical support.  Hopefully, once her spay is done & dusted next month we’ll be in the position to declare her fully fit and cancel the insurance and take the risk ourselves.  The premium is £24pm

You can get all-in-one suits to cover wounds, or an inflatable collar, which can prevent licking

Trouble is, that area is one where a dog’s tongue naturally tends, even in 100% health.  If there’s *something* there, requiring canine investigation, so much more

Good luck!

Freddie hated the cone of shame and just sat and hung his head. It was pitiful. I used to take the cone off him and just watch him like a hawk during the day and yell “no” if he even thought about getting his tongue out. You also have to watch they don’t get the cone caught on anything as Freddie nearly hung himself.

I have found putting a t-shirt on that covers the wound area a good alternative (The company Equafleece do a summer t shirt that works a treat). I have heard that a child’s pair of nappy pants can also work well. I got Freddie one of those Buster collars which is material but it didn’t stop him licking.

Good luck cos it upsetting when they look so forlorn.

It’s the worst thing, isn’t it?

Hattie is having keyhole surgery (there’s posh!)for her spay, so I’m hoping a bodysuit will cover the 3 little ‘keyholes’ sufficiently and the cone will not be required

That's what I'm doing today Gill. I've shouted "no" at him so many times he's barely speaking to me. It is the peripheral vision imbalance that makes those cones so unbearable isn't it? Eddie very kindly sent me a link to a soft collar, which I've ordered, and now I'm going to look at bodysuits. Thanks for the advice Gill. Jane.x

I think you are being unfair posting food photos at this time of night! I'm going to have to open a tube of Pringles.

As an aside, has anyone ever had a pork chop, that wasn't tough and dry? Just the worst cut of meat in the world,  after belly pork !

Belly pork, Wowzz? You’ve not been to the right places. Slowly cooked and properly prepared it’s one of the most flavoursome and tender meats to be had. Takes time, but well worth it.

Never a poor vet or poor dentist! At least I can understand why people choose to be vets but dentists!!! ?A friends daughter who is a vet probably saved her husbands life earlier this week when he had an accident with an angle grinder. It involved an air ambulance, emergency operation but has probably saved his arm and her vet training meant she knew what to do before the paramedics arrived.

Did she put a plastic cone on his head to stop him licking it.

My grandma used to go to the tripe shop in Rawson Market in Bradford. They used to eat it with salt & vinegar. They also used to eat dripping bread with salt & pepper. Just yuk!!

I agree.

I was a picky eater and quite thin until I started work.

2× £1 lottery lucky dips was my only gambling.

When the price went up and the numbers increased I stopped.

The pork chops in Italy are cut thin.We fry them in papyrus papers with various flavours. With the thicker ones a slowcooker works wonders, even my old work boots would be tender after 6 hrs.

We have been to church then got some McDonald's fish o filets and coffee and drove to our favourite beach parking spot.

We then called at Dalton Park Retail then went home and washed my car.

We are now sitting in the sun and it is 20°C.

Hope everyone has had a nice day.

Graham.

Hope Teddy gets better soon. They certainly know how to charge we had a £658 bill recently with our spaniel for a growth removing in between her pads on her paws. Less than 4 weeks and it’s grown back and she has had it removed again - for free

Michelle

I should think so too Michelle. I'd be wanting a complimentary after the first one failed. I remember your posts about the growth. It's grown back very quickly hasn't it? I hope this second operation is successful.  Jane.x

She did Brian but it's proving very difficult all round. He can't see properly, he's bashing into everything, and if he lowers his head he can scratch the wound with the edge of the cone anyway! I've ordered a soft collar and a bodysuit today so we'll see if either, or both, of them work. Jane.x

Thanks Jane. We will have to see now if it grows back again. If it does she might have to have part of one of her pads removed to get to the root of it
