Stunning night sky picture.

Hope your legs and arms are not too sore with the sunburn.

Not sore, just very red even though I was slathered in factor 50.  I have very pale skin that burns easily so I try not to spend much time in the sun.

Beautiful sunset love the colour

Thank you, I had to take a photo because we were just coming back into the house after sitting in the back garden all evening and I don't remember ever having seen such a beautiful sunset.

P and O Sue - thanks for your comment the other day - a nice young man (6' 5") came yesterday, and did all he could but said basically our phone wiring etc. is very out of date, and struggling to cope (a bit like me).  The computer is running off a phone extension, which is not ideal, and I keep getting internet 'dropping off', i.e .loss of connection, remedied by switching off router and then on again.  Annoying and time consuming, but at least I am not trying to work from home on it.  My main fear was that it would stop working altogether, and being pretty housebound we need it to order our grocery deliveries.  Will be phoned on Monday by my BT help man, Hugh, to discuss if anything can be done.  It is all a complete mystery to me; I did say I was computer dopy.

Anyway, enough about me, as they say.  I was sorry to read about the poor little injured dog; hope he can be sorted out soon.  And - no news yet about the anniversary dinner at The Pig, which  I would love to read about.

A lovely day here so far, and the GP qualy to look forward to - as well as my first lunch out in 18 months, next Saturday!  Probably fish and chips  and a glass of Sauv. Blanc.

It is great to read all your doings, even the banal everyday stuff, now that most of us cannot have the little chats with neighbours and fellow shoppers easily.

Hi lincslady ,  I’m sorry I didn’t put any information on about my anniversary dinner night I have been a bit lazy and recovering from a busy two days , but here it goes just for you and thank you for asking.

We arrived 30 before table time so we sat in one of the rooms near the cocktail bar to have a cocktail first, husband was just on alcohol free drinks all evening, I planned well ahead and chose my wine at home because they have a very extensive wine list and I would of got lost and panicked in choosing a wine , we were seated out in the conservatory which was a bit more romantic and over looking the large gardens, tables were layed out nice and all knives and forks were vintage and also the plates all different, to start with I had pea and asparagus risotto which was very nice and husband had some sort of ham ,nuts, rhubarb salad and he loved that to , he chose the 10oz steak and I chose the pork chop with crushed peas and mushrooms and had to order the chips and roasted carrots separately all very lovely and tasty but more pork chop was a little tough which I mentioned to them only because they asked otherwise I would not have said anything, anyway when the bill came my husband paid and gave me the receipt when we got home but he did mention to me it was a lot cheaper than eating at the kitchen restaurant at the chewton Glen last week, so I happened to look at the receipt the following day and low and behold I didn’t get charged for my dinner which was £23 😁 and then I noticed we didn’t get charged for our bottle of wine which was £40 so a whopping £63 off😀 so only ended up paying £80 so a brilliant night , we will return again but you have to booked up 3 months in advance sometimes and to book a room months ahead , anyway here’s some pictures of the cosy rooms as well and dinner.

I think you are being unfair posting food photos at this time of night! I'm going to have to open a tube of Pringles.

As an aside, has anyone ever had a pork chop, that wasn't tough and dry? Just the worst cut of meat in the world,  after belly pork !

I thought that to wowzz I’m hopeless at cooking a pork chop but being that the hotel is called the pig and they get all their food within 25 miles and local farmers and a chef cooking it for me it would be brill and lots of crackle on the edge if you know what I mean but it tasted just like mine so I must do them ok , think I’m off to cook some toast now not really had dinner tonight and I haven’t got any Pringles to join you 😁

Ahhhh-toast . Are you going to do the Nigella version? Butter on when the toast is warm, so it soaks in, then another layer of butter later, with some sea salt? Be still my beating heart!

This is just gastro porn!

And no one can ever cook a pork chop that is appetising.

Good morning, I hope everyone is well  Reading about some of the food got me

thinking is it the warm weather that makes us go for a quick fix with food :classic_unsure:

Just a quick slice of toast or a hand full of Pringles  . Yesterday Mrs Kalos nipped

out to have her hair done ,which meant I was left in charge of her kitchen as she "said

"get something and I will do us something on my return"  Wow , I had my chance to

shine in her kitchen, I could make what I wanted:classic_unsure: Some thing fast , easy, simple. So

having gave it some deep thought the Jamie Oliver within me was released .

That is where I got 2 slice of dry wholemeal bread  and covered them in chopped up

pickled onions topped with a few slice of pickled beetroot to add some colour to my

creation ,to be washed down with a nice glass of apple & blackcurrant  dilute pop.

What a creation and I did not mess the kitchen up either.  Do you lot have anything

like that to eat ? It is a throw back to my childhood years when we would eat things

like brown sauce sarnies , that was our fast food, no McDonalds in our day .

Thinking about it though  you can get foods that are different even on the cruise ships,

a slice of toast might seem normal in the ships buffet until you try to eat it .:classic_ohmy:

To me it does a good impression of a roof tile , it is solid, dry as a bone and resistant to

all spreads and butters you may try to spread upon it and turns into shrapnel should

you attempt to cut it with a knife . Moving onto meat I'm with Wowzz on the belly pork.

I see it as a cheap cut of meat that my Mam would buy if we couldn't afford to buy

some pork chops . These days it's fashionable to eat it again but not with Bisto gravy .

It has to be cooked in wine ,covered in jelly and sprayed in things like cider just to

make sure it doesn't taste like belly pork anymore, we wouldn't want flashbacks to our

childhood tea time would we . Years later when things got better and my Dad had a few

bob in his pocket he took my Mam out for a romantic-ish meal in Cleethorpes. After the

meal whilst taking the plates away the waiter asked my Mam "How was your steak ?"

She told him "it was lovely ,thank you"  Pleased with her response he then turned to my

Dad  .." and how did you find your belly pork sir ? "  To which he just smiled and said ..

" It was about 38 years ago , she was stood waiting for bus to Rotherham .":classic_wacko:

I hope you all have a nice day , take care :classic_love:

Oh that made laugh Kalos. And you are so right about the toast in the buffet. It has taken years for them to perfect the art of getting it that chippy. It also has the knack of when being shown a knife, it flies off onto to the plate of the passengers seated at the next table.....

I also wonder how many people have lost crowns by biting into their toast. I have found the white bread to be marginally better tho.

Food from childhood would keep this thread going for years. My Mum’s favourite snack was soft roes (not in a tin but from fishmonger) on toast. Yuk!

I have 'brains' in the back of my mind!!!!    (did I really just say that.... clever...🤓😄)

No.. she couldn't have.   Hopefully it was in a dream and mum didn't really put that on the table., or did she.   a distant memory is there lurking in my head somewhere.

Now that's really put me off my breakfast.

We used to have Brawn sarnies sometimes as kids, It was made from the flesh from a cow or pigs head, not sure whether the brains got into it though. Having been born and bred on a farm offal was always available, now they seem to use it for pet food, I am sure one of these telly chefs could knock out a plate of tripe with a raspberry jus or horseradish mash and make it look appetising, we got salt and vinegar on it.

14°C and partly cloudy this morning.

My late dad would eat tripe and Lard dripping bread.

My late mam was a cook supervisor on the school meals so we had school lunches twice a day.

No nigella version, think I’m turning into my mother version, letting the toast go cold and thickly putting the butter on so it doesn’t melt and it’s lovely

Perfect toast. I'm just eating a slice now spread with thick cut, dark seville marmalade. Yum.

Brilliant again Kalos, on the food thought of when we were kids and I was hungry it was bread and butter sandwiches with sugar sprinkled on them 😋 with my mum seeing other wise I would of got a clout around the head but apart from that sometimes if we were luck we had a tin of peaches and bread and butter for tea so I used to dip my bread into the peach juice 😋😋, my mum brought 7 of us up on her own so was tough at times .

There is no dress code in the North Staffs area other than for safety reasons shoes should cover toes so no sandles but I am constantly amazed at how many people ignore that rule, I definitely wouldn't want to have a wood weighing over 2 lbs dropped on my toes.

Dripping.... Uurgh...

I remember going to my Mums while she had popped to the shops and thought it would be a good idea to giver her oven and eye level grill a good clean...

When she returned, she went berserk, because I had cleaned all the bacon fat and debris from her grill pan???

She proclaimed 'THAT WAS MY BREAKFAST!!!' 😊

I have enjoyed reading the food memories  from everyone's  childhood and I can remember quite a few of the dishes such as tripe, toast with dripping, brawn and brains being eaten by my parents and grandparents but personally of the list I only ate the toast and dripping.  During the winter months mum used to give us bovril with toast and dripping when we got home from school.  I can't  imagine eating that sort of food now but I don't think that it did us any harm.

@Purdey16 your meal looks delicious.

We were a little more "Down market " and it was OXO for us. It made a nice winters day

drink served in a mug with a dash of white pepper (was there any other back then :classic_unsure:)

If you were hungry then rip up a slice of Mothers Pride into tiny bits , drop into your

Oxo drink ,grab a spoon and you were sorted :classic_love:
