Royal Caribbean Cruisers -- How Are Things Where You Are? (was "Routine" 😁 day in lockdown... how was yours?)

Went with an i7-10700, an RTX-2070, 32GB of DDR4 3200 RAM, a couple of 1TB MVNe SSDs, and a couple of 5TB spinning disks for photo/video archive.

This looks about what I am considering.  About the only difference is I am going to try out an AMD cpu this time.  I still have room on my synology nas that I got a few years back.  I have it connected to the home network. It has two 2TB spin disks set up in raid format in case a drive fails.  Works great for my photo archive and I have set up sections for my wife and I to clean off our phone photos.

We’ll that was an experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Started OK with the driver skillfully backing the truck down the street without damaging any trees, mailboxes, or lawns. Would not have been a good way to meet the neighbors. The first 2 table and chair that they brought in were damaged…gouged wood and torn leather. Disappointing but they weren’t anything special and can be replaced. They then brought in a series of boxes that were crushed. We had to quickly open all boxes to see what f anything inside was damaged. We have 90 days to report damage but I wanted to get as much damage as possible noted on the driver’s paperwork

We brought most of our important/valuable stuff with us in the car. Micheline however had 3 “heirloom” pieces of furniture handed down for her grandfather that were on the truck. There were a matching Birdseye maple dresser and nightstand that we had just had professionally refinished, and a solid walnut drop leaf table that Micheline herself refinished (it was perfect). They brought the Birdseye maple nightstand in and the top had been gouged. Tears started flowing at that point. Fortunately, the matching dresser was OK. After more crushed, scratched, bent, and chipped stuff kept coming, we were numb. That was good because the walnut table came last and the pedestal leg was completely broken off. I don’t think it can be salvaged. Will be interesting to see how much money they give us for that.

When the movers left, we locked the door and decided to get some fish tacos and cold drinks while staring at the ocean. We’ll deal with the mess in the house later.

How disappointing.  Shame on the moving company for doing such a p*** poor job, with so much damage & breakage.  As for the heirloom piece that you think might not be repairable, maybe find a custom woodworker who can build a replacement if he can’t repair.

That's the problem I have. When you have the Adobe Creative Suite, you almost need to buy a new computer for every upgrade.

@bobmacliberty I hate that for you.  We just had the roof replaced.  They damaged some landscaping in the front that could of been avoided.  It upset the wife and therefore upset me.  It took a lot for me to somewhat control my anger when discussing the situation.  Have I was talking with the guy in charge they dumped more stuff down on it. Thankful it is all done now.

I understand how stuff like this can hurt especially when it hurts the wife.

We really miss having an outdoor grill, so we also decided to take the temporary route...a cheap camping grill from Lowes, until we can get the real thing built.

We don't even have anything to put it on until the moving truck gets here.  🤣🤣

I thought the little Lowes grill was cute!  🙂

OMG that's terrible!!  I can see one or two things having minor damage...but what you are describing is a complete lack of any kind of care or responsibility.   That "moving" company is the pits!!  So sorry you are having to go through that, moving is hard enough to deal with...then that happens.  Not right at all. 😞

Yes I get frustrated at work since we have company policy that we must upgrade. The problem is Adobe runs with all of our other software in the newsroom. A lot of times the upgrades will cause problems in our other programs and then they have to have the bugs updated. Very frustrating.

On the home front. I got a new Go Pro Hero 9 but I can't even edit the footage smoothly on my Mac's as they are 2011 and 2013. I might as well forget about shooting anything in 2.7K or 4K.

I am so sorry you had this experience.  We had similar (but not as extensive) damage when we had our stuff moved.  It went from our old house to storage and then to the new house so loading and unloading twice.  Lots of pieces of furniture with broken legs or finials.  One end table was just a million pieces they put in a box!!  I couldn’t even imagine how it could have been broken into so many pieces!!  Did they throw it off a skyscraper and then back over it with the truck?!

I’ve been considering upgrading my iPad Pro and trying out the Affinity software.  My main use is Photoshop for photo editing.  This program looks worth trying.  With the newest iPad Pro using an M1 chip, it might be nice for this.  I didn’t care for Adobe going to a subscription base.  I used to only upgrade Photoshop about every 3 years.  With subscription it seems like they push out upgrades without testing them much.

Day started out gloomy, fog, cold, drizzle again...but sun came out a couple of hours ago for our long walk.  So many nice place to walk here, starting with our 1/2 mile long wooded driveway.

Until the sun came back out...it was time for a "belly warmer' type meal for lunch again.  This time it was my homemade chicken veggie noodle soup.  Put my Farmer's market veggies and the left over chicken to work for me.  🙂   Leftovers a plenty for next chilly, foggy day!

I totally agree with this. I am a professional user but I would prefer to own my own products. I may after I retire switch to Final Cut so that I don't have to pay subscription fees. Right now at home I am using my son's college adobe account but will go away as he just graduated.

I am in the same boat.  My last build was about 10 years ago so it doesn’t handle much editing anymore.

I did figure out how to get rid of frustration at work. Yes, retired.  But see that brought on the desire to upgrade so I can enjoy photo editing again.  It also brought about a much larger garden to deal with.  Lol

So sorry it happened to you. Heartbreaking to be sure.

Having gone through a relocation to and from Brussels (a big container on a ship), with absolutely nothing to complain, this company seems to me utterly unprofessional.😢

That is a terrible moving experience for sure............Most moving companies only give you a value of 60 cents per pound for damages inless you buy the more expensive insurance to cover things.

Important thing when packing is to wrap everything really good with paper, bubble wrap etc., and most importantly make sure all the boxes are completely full.

My wife did most our our packing when we moved and had everything wrapped really good, she packed boxes for months before we finally moved.

If the truck is not packed tight or items tied down things will shift on the drive and break.

Was my job to take all the boxes into the basement, to make the upstairs show better with less clutter when we put our house up for sale.

It worked to , we got multiple offers.

Then when moving time came myself and few friends help packed the ABF trailers.

All we had break were a couple of coffee cups that I had packed myself........Everything else was in great shape, all the heavy furniture was wrapped in moving blankets by the movers and all arrived fine.

The tighter you pack the trucks the better off you are, ours was about a 500 mile move. NJ to Virginia.

Thanks everyone for your kind words.  While still disappointed, we now realize that the only thing that can't easily be repaired or replaced was the walnut table (it IS amazing what tacos can do).  We can probably find someone who can turn a new pedestal leg for the walnut table and stain everything to match, but that will almost certainly cost more than the table is worth.  It was the sentimental value.  Nothing else had any sentimental value or was worth a significant amount of money.  If we're compensated, we can make most of this go away.  Micheline can buy something special to at least partially replace the walnut table.

The ball is now in Allied Van Lines court to make this right.  We'll see how they respond.  I've already let them know that there was significant damage and that we have pictures of everything (hint, hint).
