Good for you. Mystic was the favorite right?

The favorite was Fierceness, who finished 15th.  To be honest, I didn't even look at the entire list of horses, I just saw one named Dan and I didn't even know what the odds were.  🤪  If I hadn't seen one with my son's name, I would not have bet.

The adventure begins.

Sarah and I are sitting at the airport waiting for our flight to Vancouver where we will board the Explora Journey tomorrow for a 6 day cruise to Los Angeles.  This will be our first time sailing a cruise line other than Royal and this will be the complete opposite of what we are used to.

The Explora Journey is 64,000 Tonnes. 900 passengers and 700 crew, all suites, everything included.  This is MSC's new high end line that for an easy comparison would be like Silversea is to Royal.

We only have two stops, Astoria and San Francisco.  Astoria we will just wander around and have lunch in town at a local fish and chip shop.  In San Francisco we are docked from 9am to 11pm so I have Go Cars booked for 8 hours for us to see some sights and then an evening behind the scenes tour of Alcatraz.

I'll post pictures and updates along the way.

The only concern right now is that yesterday, Westjet issued a 72 hour lockout notice to the mechanics union so that could impact our flight home.

The other thing I was not prepared for was the dress code on board.  Resort casual for the day and resort elegant for the evening.  A quick shopping trip and visit to the dry cleaners was required this week.  So much for travelling with a carry on only.

Tonight's hotel in Vancouver is done on the cheap with us staying at the Days inn by the Airport however an unexpected bonus is Vancouvers summer food festival is open and across the street so that will be dinner tonight.

Buon Viaggio! Looking forward to your posts!

If I had known how to place a bet I might have since I go the Mystic CT often.

Strike one against Westjet.  They just made an announcement that the in flight entertainment system would be unavailable for our 5 hour flight.

Happened on my JetBlue flight to FLL. All that mattered to me was that they got me to FLL.... and 20 minutes early at that.

Alcatraz was a very interesting and informative tour. Glad we did it during one of our S.F. trips.

If you get a chance, try to stop at The Buena Vista Cafe for their famous Irish Coffee. It's located at the corner of Hyde & Beach Street. The food selections was not bad either.

Enjoy your cruise.

Anyone in South Florida on the weekend of the 17th? It’s the weekend of the Redland International Orchid Festival. I go often and usually go on Friday and Sunday. Friday there are often bigger plants that the vendors bring in where they might only have a few of and Sundays for some bargains. This year I’ll only be going on Friday. I usually shop for about 4 - 6 hours each day so this year 1 day will be enough. It’s outside and it can get hot walking for most of the time. I hate it when it rains, hoping it doesn’t this year.

Strike 2, no charging ports.

That is why we always have entertainment downloaded to our iPad and phones, as well as fully charged portable chargers.  That happened to us once, and we were glad we were prepared.

Yep, I don't fly enough to realize that.  Strike 3, no internet on board either.

We booked a Westjet flight and they are using one of their discount sisters planes (Swoop).  Not overly impressed.

My Kentucky Derby selection - I pick Sierra Leone to win (I like the name).   I would love to see the longshot West Saratoga to win.

I picked the horse that came in 15th.

I need to teach everyone to knit.  Perfect for down time with no internet needed. Lol. I am disappointed that no one else showed up for the stitchers meet up this morning.  Sigh

We plan to watch the Kentucky Derby race, not all the pre race coverage.

We looked over the horses slated to run.

DH picked Fierceness as Velazquez is the jockey and he usually roots for him. I picked Track Phantom.

We’ll see!

Seems the favorite is Sierra Leone. We don’t bet on much, but we have placed bets on the KD at a local OTB in the past. Are there any OTB places anymore?

A number of years ago, we attended a family wedding near Louisville KY.

Since it was a late afternoon wedding, we used the morning time to take a tour of Churchill Downs. It is a beautiful place.
We have also gone to Belmont Park for both the big race and other times for regular races. My DH’s grandfather was a member of the Track and Field club there and he would lend us his pass to have lunch at the club and watch the races.

Belmont has been changed to a casino and entertainment venue, although the race track remains.

Wishing you all a winning day!

MJ🙋🏻‍♀️

The President of a company that I worked for once had a son who was a Harness Racing Driver primarily at Roosevelt Raceway and Yonkers Raceway.Occasionally he would ask me to place a bet for him at the nearby OTB.He often mentioned that I might want to bet on a horse that his son was driving that night.

I thought everybody from NJ, as well as the rest of the northeast, was moving south.  Everybody moving here seems to be from the northeast or Ohio.  We've said we are full, way too much building going on, pretty soon there won't be a tree left, it is sad.  We have passively looked around but to get away from it we would need to move farther away from the beach than we want to.

Three of my friends moved from NYC to SC.

LOL!  We did move South😁 An hour away from our very crowded Staten Island with so much traffic, we did get away from it for a couple of years, and our grandchildren have made some awesome friendships here, not to mention the opportunities discovering the talents the four of them all have shown to have been blessed with!  With that said, it is becoming quite full here..just saying..🤨

One of my daughters got together recently with friends who moved south,to NJ.They met at a Diner in Staten Island.
