Royal Caribbean Cruisers -- How Are Things Where You Are? (was "Routine" 😁 day in lockdown... how was yours?)

Recommended Posts

First Concert=Paul Revere and the Raiders

Last Concert=Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree

Brushes with greatness.

1) Worked as a sound engineer at an outdoor amphitheater where the band Toto came and played two concerts. Met all the guys and helped do sound. Amazing experience.

2) Working at same venue, the band Rolls Royce (song "Car Wash")came to town. We had rented a drum set for the drummer, but he hated the snare and bass drum pedal. I told him I had a good pedal and snare at home that he was welcome to use. He said let's go. I took him home to get my equipment and had a great conversation. Imagine the surprise when I walked in the house and my mom and dad   saw this tall guy and I said to them this is the drummer for Rolls Royce we are here to get some equipment.

3) While going to Berklee of Music my drum teacher Gary Chaffee would have weekend jams at his house. He would invite me over and sometimes let me sit in. I got to play with guitar players Pat Metheny, Mike Stern and vibraphonist Gary Burton.

Tons of other stories but these are just a few.

My first rock festival, Reading Festival 1973 o saw Rod Stewart and the faces

On my once in a lifetime bucket list is to get to Glastonbury for the festival.  I might getting to old to have any expectation that that is going to happen but I still think it is possible.

So, next time, the Mongolian beef and the General Tsao’s Chicken, made with shrimp instead of chicken.... it is killer.

Trust me on this one.

They'll sub the chicken for shrimp?  Who'd have known.  Will definitely try it.

My favorite band of all time, along with Peter Gabriel Genesis, and the Moody Blues. I have seen them about 8 times.... last time, I think was 2014, they were doing the entire Quadrophenia album... saw them in Tulsa at the BOK in about the 8th row.  Great show, Peter no longer has a great voice, his brother was playing, they did a video montage of Keith and John, doing their thing.  Roger still mostly sounded good, but nothing like the old days.  It was a great show.

Did you live in Tulsa ?

That is your opinion.Dylan in the 60’s could sing and wrote great songs.

I was born in 59, I had his greatest hits album, not the original albums in about 73, and in his greatest hits albums, he couldn’t sing a lick.  He is the worst singer to ever make multi bazillions.  I am not saying his songs weren’t great or that he isn’t an all-time great, I am just saying he never recorded any great singing.  Great songs yes, great singing, a definite no... I harken back to you East Coast prejudices.

Just Sayin....  no matter how many times you say he can sing... he clearly couldn’t at least not while recording his singing....

JMHO and YMMV

I am a Notary and for several years I was notarizing music contracts. In lieu of payment I received autographed photos and back stage passes .The singers/groups that I notarized the most for were Motley Crue,Van Halen,Sting and Billy Joel.

I learned that in Memphis on a very busy night, when we showed up and there was an hour wait list, and we went to the bar, and this couple while we were having a drink ordered it that way, and I said, woah, you can order it that way and he said yeah do it all the time and it is excellent.  So when they finished we took their seats and replicated their order, and it was awesome, that was at least a decade ago.  Have done it many times since.

That was the Welsh Terrier rescue mission where we took 7 dogs we rescued from a puppy mill and one of them the vet we took them to before taking them to a saint of human being who rehabilitated these miserable wrecks, told us one they had named sh*tter.  It was a cold miserable January day, and we had a 6 hour drive to Memphis where we were going to meet the saint to give her these poor dogs, We didn’t make it 30 minutes out of town before sh*tter did her thing.... It was raining and sleeting and sh*tter was unfortunately the most buried crate in the back of our MPV van, and we just cracked the window and suffered.

Yikes....  We deserved the shrimp version of General Tsos.

I am not saying he was the best singer but he certainly was not the worst. He sold out some of the largest venues in the world. He is a music icon to most people my age and a lot younger.

Agree. He was a great singer that couldn't sing. Also an average guitar player. A lot of great artist can't sing or play very good. But that doesn't mean what they sang or plyed aren't great songs. That's why I always prefer live concerts over studio (recorded) music.

Yes, he is a superstar.

No, he can not sing a lick.  Never could.

The last 20 years he absolutely doesn’t even try.  I have gone to concerts in that time frame, and if I listen really close, I can figure out what 1960s song he is butchering.  In 1965 he couldn’t sing.... in 2010, it is just noise.

I like some of his stuff very much... even though historically it is completely inaccurate, his song about Hurricane, is wonderful.  One of may all-time favorites, and other of his songs are very poignant and I like them, but he couldn’t sing and after the 1990s he quit trying to sing.

Would you say that about Mark Knoepler ?

Dani, thank you so much and thank your husband for that romantic song.  Portofino is a definite on my bucket list.  Your post is very appropriate as we came home not long ago from dinner out at "North Italia." Wonderful food.    We all dug in before I could take food porn photos.  It was special having our daughter and friends with us.  I will try and send table pics with no food. lol

Did you or anybody see Stanley Tucci special on Italy I think it was 10 episodes on cnn  each one was a different area of Italy featuring all the great food on first episode he went to a pizza place where the margarita pizza was first made in Naples , we went there 20 years ago by far my favorite pizza I ever had . Have only been to Italy twice but would love to return, my last European cruise had 5 stops in Italy but unfortunately Naples was not one. I heard Sophia Lauren speak about 5 years ago and we were able to ask her a question and we asked what her favorite food was and she responded I am from Naples so of course it’s pizza.

I "own" the same "specimen", and I'm not frustrated one tiny bit -- on the contrary, not only saving $$, but being sure about the quality of the work done...😉

I have one of those also. He can do a lot of stuff, but we aren’t getting any younger. I’m still trying to convince him my way is better. Just hire someone. He’s slowly learning. 😁
