What will it take for you to cruise in the 1st 4 months after NCL starts sailing again?

If they should cruise from Stockholm I shouldn't mind to cruise rather soon. I can drive to the port and if there should be an outbreak on the ship I'm pretty sure that they should let me disembark in Stockholm.

 

I have a sister who lives in Italy and a brother who lives in New York state so the situation here in Sweden doesn't scare me at all, yet!

That's an easy question for me. All it takes is the cruise I have already booked for my Alaska cruise in July.

But, in order to cover my bases, I have put the minimum deposit on the same cruise for next year, just in case.

The only way I can lose is if NCL goes bankrupt. But, I for one, am willing to take the chance.

Life is too short to spend too much time worrying about it.

We were on the last sailing of the Gem in March.  It was announced while we were onboard that they were stopping further cruises.  In speaking with crew members, they were saying that one of the problems on cruise ships is that the entire ship uses the same air supply which is re-circulated so it's very easy for viruses and germs to travel thorough the ventilation system.

 

I think that the cruise lines will need to definitely look into this issue.  While it may not be possible to rework the entire ventilation system, perhaps some type of vent filters (like on air conditioners) may help to block out some of the bacteria.

recycled air, just like in an airplane.

 

my central air unit at home is for both a/c and heat. it has a filter at the base of the blower.

there are different types of filters from cheap stranded fiberglass ($.50/each) that filters just 40% of dust, to super expensive ones that filter allergens.

but i dont know any that filters viruses.

For all the people who are ready to cruise right away, I have a a few questions.  And I am not saying this to be controversial, I am just asking a question. 

 

1.  Will you pay for any and all "extras" if the cruise does not go as planned?   

 

Like: 

Transportation from a different port?  Hospitalization? Extra days on the ship plus grats (what if the cruise lines add that on?)

 

If you are willing and able to pay for ANY inconvenience you may experience regarding the cruise, then you should definitely go.  If you are not willing or able to pay, then you should not go.  

 

If you look at the roll calls of ships that have had problems(from about mid FEB) you will see that before the cruise, people were saying, "Nothing can keep me off the ship" ,  "I don't care if I am stuck on the ship, at least I am at sea" etc. 

 

If you look at them now, it is "when will I get a refund", "they won't pay for airline changes"

 

So, if you are willing and able to handle every single change without expecting the cruise line or the government of any country to handle the expense...........have a safe trip and enjoy your cruise.

I don't know of any either, but you would think that if medical grade masks block viruses that someone could come up with an air filter that would block viruses.  Probably would be good for airplane travel also.

sounds logical.

then again, the force of a person inhaling air is much less than a blower forcing air throughout the plane, and especially throughout a cruise ship!

 

hopeful the retired chief engineer sees this post and offers his opinion.

They are called HEPA filters.

They are used mostly in medical settings ( IV compounding rooms, infectious patient isolation rooms, etc).

They are also used on airplanes.

Most of the countries around the Baltic sea are members of the European Union so I shouldn't worry about costs for hospitalization.

So you would not expect any other comps or payments from the cruise line if anything goes wrong?  No free wifi, no extras?  No free cruises, or airfare to your home?  If so, you are definitely ready to go!!  

 

People are worried about cruise lines not allowing anyone over 70 to cruise and to have a form signed by a doctor stating that you are healthy enough to cruise.  Maybe the cruise lines will only allow those that sign a form saying you have the money to cover added expenses and that the cruise line will not be responsible for any added expenses due to missing ports, sickness on board, etc.

I had a July (Carnival) cruise booked that was canceled (due to ship refurbishment delay) so rebooked for Oct.  Oct cruise is "no longer available" to book and I cannot buy excursions or gifts.  In addition, it's out of NY.  IMHO...it's on the queue to cancellation. Thinking ahead, I canceled and booked something for June 2021. DH and I were really not comfortable with Oct.  By reading posts in general...I have no doubt that someone with mild symptoms would try to mask them just to sail.

 

For me to be comfortable they need to come up with a vaccine.  I imagine those who are ready to jump on board asap don't live in "the epicenter" so it's more like "things that happen to other people" than having a temp hospital built (literally) across the street.

        Not much for me, I have been a teacher, computer tech, doctor, dentist, maid, and gourmet chef over the last 2 months I’m ready to go.  I’m 85 days out I’m assuming it will be canceled but if not I’m going. I’m not canceling because I don’t want fcc. I also feel far more comfortable on a cruise ship then I would at any domestic vacation. I’m not a camper so my alternative is long lines and close proximity at a theme park. My wife also said no way to a rv trip around the us. I find myself pleasant so I’m not sure what her problem is.

It'll take at least six months of trouble free cruising across the board before I'd even contemplate booking one for myself.

We'll be waiting until there's a vaccine.  DH is in a higher risk group.  No cruise is worth his life.

If the cruise shall end in Stockholm of course I expect them to take me to Stockholm. Thay have no reason to end the cruise anywhere else.

i had 3 free cruises in my acct. 1 from land casino and 2 from CAS. 

all of which must book by end of March, and must sail by with various dates between April and Sept.

I plan on going in December - so if that is within the first 4 months - I am in.  My doctor told me as long as I follow good hygiene, I should be fine (I am on immunosuppressant drugs) but also they think we (my family) have already had it in January - no test but based on symptoms, etc.  
Worst case scenario I am thinking for us is quarantine - but an aft penthouse - big balcony - I think we can deal if necessary

i wonder if i had it.  Around March 1, i had a heavy chest, dry cough, 2 day temperature of 100, my legs muscle hurt, i felt heavy and a little tired. I used a heating pad on my chest . I did not think anything of it because i usually suffer from mild asthma around this time but this felt different, i never get a temperature with asthma. Is not that i could not breathe but my breathing felt heavy, with lots of work, for me it took 4 week maybe a little longer to clear, drank lots of hot liquids etc. My brother had something similar maybe he got it from me...I have read others stories on how bad they felt with covid19 and i like to think maybe mine was just a common cold because i managed it at home but who knows,i never got tested. I am 49 years old.

Every HVAC system works this way, ships are not unique. That is the way they are designed. 

 

If you try to run some HEPA filter that has the ability to filter viruses you will have so much back pressure the system simply will not work.  We don't even filter out all the dust in HVAC systems, much less to that scale.
