That can't be good for cruising.

It's  not.  It's simply another reality check.

Yes, it's nice to think positive thoughts, but one also has to develop a sense of realistic expectations and act accordingly.

Positive cases on cruise ship docked in Greece

A dozen crew members have tested positive for the virus on board the cruise ship Mein Schiff 6.

The cruise was the first to dock in Greece after the Covid-19 lockdown, and is currently moored off the Aegean island of Milos, AFP news agency reports.

Tests were carried out on 150 of the ship's 666 crew members. Those who tested positive have now been isolated on board.

The ship was heading towards Piraeus, near Athens, but is now waiting for instructions from the country's public health agency.

More false positive testing?

Can you imagine flying to Rom from the US for a 11 night cruise and being test in this fashion?

This is going to suck for some future cruisers.

Agree and that is the scary part.  Many false positives were discovered during the baseball season.

I think at this point we have to expect this kind of stuff - the question is not so much, "who tested positive" as it is "what are the cruise lines doing to mitigate exposure"... Even the Healthy Sail Panel acknowledged that its *going* to happen... The biggest question is going to be how the cruise lines deal with it when it does

Yep.  That's why I like United's system where you get tested at SFO before you fly to Hawaii.  But that takes cooperation between SFO, California, and Hawaii.

Ideally, a cruiser would get tested before starting travel at their originating airport.  If I get false positive at home, it would be bad, but at least I have not started traveling yet.  But not nearly as bad as flying to a EU city, and getting stopped at the cruise port.  In my book, I am already traveling.

This would take more cooperation than United's Hawaii system.  Now we're adding EU and embark port.  With every additional country and jurisdiction, the chances of cooperation get slim.  Heck, when was the last time everyone agreed on where to go to lunch at work?

Have to correct myself... an information from onboard was a little misunderstanding. By last night all processed second tests came back negative. The captain did not tell a number but the last the cruise line did confirm was 6 (at that was 4:30 pm German time). The ship is docked in Piraeus now. No news so far. But by now all second tests must have been processed.

The problem with this new  covid virus is that it might show a negative result but you can still be a carrier which is even more dangerous. You carry the bodies of the virus and potentially get people around you sick. So, if your result was first positive and then negative - you still need to be very careful

Absolutely.  That has always been my concern.

In the same way, where all the airlines have been promoting safety by saying ‘we check temperatures of all passengers’ - and you happen to have a raised temperature because of some non-covid related infection, does that make you lose your 7 day cruise in Alaska or indeed your 11 night Aegean cruise ???

We are talking about thousands of pounds of travellers‘ money.  Days of annual leave.  All at risk.

@Roger88 that´s why a third round of tests will be done.

But usually when you carry the virus the first test might be negative as there is not enough viral material. Then the second test is positive. But usually there are one or two days inbetween the tests. Here it was within a 24 hour time period.

All crew members are onboard for at least for weeks now with not going ashore (except for those who have to because of their job - but no free off time onshore). All crew members are tested on a regular basis.

The airline I work for you have to produce a negative test result before you are accepted on the flight. And same for return flight. The test had to be within 72 hours of travel. With fast tests being developed I think that time frame will come down.

Latest new - confirmed by TUI Cruises - all 12 crew members have been negative on the second PCR test. The Greek authorities did an antibody test and it was negative too. Also 24 contact persons who are on isolation too have been tested negative with the antibody test. The 12 have been tested once more with an PCR test. Results are of course pending as this takes several hours.

If you are negative you are negative.  Quit with this nonsensical fear porn.

Your statement is not accurate. Here are two articles that demonstrate a problem with false negatives:

This article is easier to read from Contagion Live:

https://www.contagionlive.com/news/when-is-a-negative-covid19-test-truly-negative#:~:text=According to Woloshin%2C several recent, person to be picked up.

And one from the New England Journal of Medicine:

That’s interesting!  Sounds like we have no idea with supreme confidence who is positive and negative.

If I’m negative I am negative - that’s my mindset.    After two tests in a week I’m negative.  I’m going back into the world - much like I have the past few months.   Sorry

Do you want some materials on false positives as well?

It is my understanding that the company who administered the  original tests announced that the initial  results were incorrect

Unfortunately  the in accurate  info has spread  all around the news outlets and once again cruising is deemed not safe!
