Thank you for the Monday Daily, Rich.  I hope our Canadians are celebrating Commonwealth Day.  I hope to pass on Be Nasty Day.  A salute to International Women's Day.  The quote is interesting.  Another Norwegian port I have not visited.  The meal looks interesting.  My alternative is Chilled Pineapple Pina Colada, Pineapple Glazed Ham, and Pistachio Ice Cream as served on MS Prinsendam March 8, 2019.

Good morning, everyone!

I'm off to the pool this morning and then this afternoon I get my second jab of the Moderna vaccine.  I am so excited!

Today's celebrations are interesting.  I think I'll pass on Be Nasty Day.  The drink of the day sounds interesting.  I'm looking forward to information on Hammerfest.

Today's meal sounds good.  I'm sure some other cheeses could be substituted for those who find blue cheese to be too strong.  Good reviews on this one, but only one person left a comment.

Good Monday morning.  Thank you for the Daily Report.

I will not be nasty today.  Sorry, that is not a day  I will celebrate.

But I salute all women who have influenced me in my life.  And a salute to our Commonwealth.  Many years ago, I was on a HAL ship and there was a Commonwealth brunch for those of us from a Commonwealth country.  Met lots of Aussies then.🙂

The dinner looks good, thanks for the recipe.  And the ham dinner sounds good too.  Not sure what we will have.

Looking forward to reading about the drink of the day and the wine.

I've never been to Hammerfest, but I loved seeing some ports in Norway on our cruise several years ago.

Sending prayers to all on the Care List.  Cheers to all who celebrate.

Stay safe.

Today's sunrise is actually a sunset, from my last cruise, Queen Mary 2 from Sydney to Perth instead of New York. On March 8 we visited Melbourne and it was the 10th time I saw "Come From Away"

Good morning all!

Yay to International Women’s Day! I love the quote. My mom was an inventory control specialist; computers came into her life very early. She worked when they were hulking pieces of equipment in their own room with carefully controlled temp (cold) and they used punch cards. Garbage in, garbage out was her favorite expression.

Another port I haven’t visited ☹️. Looking forward to descriptions/pictures.

I have not heard of this drink; I wonder what ingredients go into the recipe for the time of your life.

Hope some workmen show up to continue my kitchen remodel here at our vacation home. I have a frig, a stove and a microwave now, but no plumbing yet. Waiting for the tile for the backsplash right now. My end of January finish morphed into end of February, sure hope it’s not the end of March! Shower doors still not delivered either. Oh well, enough whining.

Today is supposed to be sunny and a high of 66 degrees, I’ll take it!

Take care everyone.

Thank you for today’s Daily, Rich! What a combo of days! Nastiness should never have its own day. But I will celebrate International Women’s Day, by getting my second dose of the vaccine! @dfishwe can compare notes!  Woo hoo! 🥂to all our Dailyites in the Commonwealth!

Roy, thank you for our lists! When do you go for your CT scan? Morning Dailyites & my Sisters. Looking forward to reading about the drink. Debbie, I would substitute Gorgonzola for the bleu cheese. Just enough power for me.

After getting my second dose, I am back to meet my painter. He is going to paint my new door. Then I am going to dog walk my neighbor’s Grand dog, Emma. A beautiful golden retriever mix. I will try to snap a picture. I have been told she will do almost anything for a treat. 😎 It is another sunny but WINDY day here.

Prayers for all who need our support. Cheers to all who are celebrating!

Stay well everyone!

This Cab has great ratings for all released vintages, though the 2016 vintage has slightly higher ratings, and is also the most expensive. On line prices start at $19.99, but you might be able to find it for less locally! The review and notes are for the 2016 vintage.

Winemaker Notes

Borne of Fire epitomizes the terroir of The Burn. This rugged, yet elegant wine leads with herbal expressive aromas laced with pomegranate and stony minerals. Upon tasting the wine, powdery tannins frame flavors of cherry, currant, savory spice, and red pepper. A green coffee inflected finish rounds out the overall experience.  Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec

JS96 James Suckling:  This is the first year made of this wine with wonderful blackberries, rose leaves and blueberries. Wildly floral. Stems. Full body and round and fine tannins. Juicy and intense. Shows an eccentric style. All large oak [Large Format Barrels]. A new nature and personality. Drink now or hold.

Good Monday morning.  I only plan to be nasty to the weeds growing in my plants.  I like the other two days too.  The quote is so true.  Many believe what it says on the internet.  Interesting meal, thank you Debbie for the recipe.  Looking forward to hearing about the port.  Prayers and toasts to our lists.  Stay safe, social distancce, and wear your mask.

I couldn't find Time of My Life, but did find Thyme of My Life:

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp fresh thyme
  • 2 tbsp gin
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp of thyme simply syrup see recipe
  • 3 tbsp tonic or soda water

Instructions

  1. Make a simple thyme syrup by bringing 2 cups water, 1 cup sugar, and 3 tablespoons fresh thyme to a simmer in a small saucepan.
  2. Let simmer for a few minutes then remove from heat and let infuse for another ten minutes.
  3. Strain into a jar.
  4. For each drink combine 2 tablespoons of gin, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, and 2 teaspoons thyme syrup in a small glass.
  5. Stir well, add 4-5 ice cubes & top off with about 3 tablespoons tonic or soda water.

Thanks for the Daily, Rich and our morning smile 🙂

Be Nasty Day is one day I hope none of us celebrate.  I will happily celebrate International Women’s Day and Commonwealth Day and listen to the Queen’s message today.  Can’t help but wonder if it will be tweaked after the interview last night with her grandson and wife.

That quote is so true.  Interesting meal suggestion - think we will go with Roy’s alternate suggestion - pineapple glazed ham.

We’ll be in Hammerfest next year so I’m looking forward to hearing about it from those that have been.

It’s been over a year since all of the restrictions started :

Prayers for everyone on Roy’s Care list & for those that need them.  And a big 🥂 to those on the Celebratory / Shout Out list.

Have a great Monday everyone.  Stay safe and warm and please don’t forget your masks 😷

Good morning, thanks for the Daily!  Be Nasty Day . . . nope, I don't think so.  Happy International Women's Day to all my cruising sisters!  Happy Commonwealth day to my fellow commonwealthers (lol).  I didn't watch last night's interview, but understand it was quite scathing.  I'm sure HRH et al were not pleased.

We had a great weekend weather-wise, but it appears we can't quite put the snow shovels away yet.  The forecast is calling for another 5 to 7 cm (around 2") of snow today.  With that in mind, I think I'll make today's menu suggestion, but will sub in a super sharp cheddar, or maybe just fresh grated parmesan for the bleu cheese, as I'm allergic to the stuff.  With a side salad it will make a nice meal for us on a snowy night.  And wine.

BTW, did anyone watch the sail-away of our lovely Nieuw Statendam from FLL yesterday afternoon?  It was wonderful seeing that blue-hulled beauty on the screen again!

We went for groceries early yesterday morning and while there, I saw a man grab a grape and pop it in his mouth.  I really dislike that habit, and it annoyed me to see it.  Later in the day I saw this, and it really made me giggle:

image.thumb.png.931985c9a591acda38906b5ca1713e7d.png

Prayers for everyone who needs them and even for those who don't think they do.  Extra hugs for Roy.  Raising the wine glasses tonight to toast all on the happy list.  Be well, stay safe, wash your hands and wear your mask(s).

Smooth Sailing!  🙂🙂🙂

Love your quote today! When I was at the market yesterday I was so happy to see our brand of toilet paper back on the shelves.

Hi all!  We are shuffling things up today and instead of our morning treadmill routine we plan on taking a long walk about mid-morning to an out of the way area of our neighborhood that has recently been under development.  I hear some people actually live over there now so we want to see the new streets and homes.  They tell us all to stay out of the way while the builders are working on streets, underground utilities, and early home construction so we did.  The fresh air will be good for us and we get to use new muscles going up and down the hills.

Hammerfest, Norway is a port we saw on what we call the Famous Norway Cruise of 2016.  If you ever see a cruise itinerary that includes ports like Hammerfest, Bronnoysund, Trondheim and Narvik, book it.  I always look for cruises that include a couple of new ports and this one was it.  Little did we know we'd meet the very personable Captain D. D. on that Prinsendam cruise.  He later told us the surveys that were returned after this cruise made it the highest rated cruise in recent Holland America history.  We had a ball!

This was the furthest north port before arrival at Honningsvag and North Cape.  The weather was sunny but very windy so we required tugs to get to the dock.  That made our disembarkation about an hour and a half later than planned.  Little did we know that we would be leaving early as well as arriving late!  More about that later.

enhance

enhance

We took the shuttle bus to the downtown area and started a walk up the steps to Mt. Salen's peak.  The port has a bit of distance from where we docked and then a curved road around to the other side of the harbor to the downtown area.  Here is a pic from Mt. Salen that shows the distance involved, somewhat.enhance

Mt. Salen isn't terribly tall so most of us could make it up the slope to the top.  There's a gentle ramp so you could stop and rest if necessary.  It's worth the view of the town.  enhance

enhance

enhance

After leaving there we walked along the main street towards the Hammerfest Kirke built in 1961 which featured unusual architecture inspired by fish scales.  We passed some cute painted mailboxes in front of homes which I couldn't pass up without a photo.  Can you tell this is a mailbox?enhance

The front of the church and then the side of the unique church.enhance

enhanceI think I will split up this visit's photos into two posts.  They get so long and I don't want to lose anything.

Good morning Rich. Thank you so much for the Daily. I don't think any day should be nasty. As for dinner suggestion, we're meeting friends tonight for prime rib Monday. It's been a long while since we were there, as they do not have outside seating.

Roy, hoping everything goes well tomorrow. Keeping you in prayer.

Love to my sweet sisters and top of the morning to our Dailyites. Ann hope your 2nd shot isn't too annoying.

I am looking forward to having Claudio and his guys come this morning. I believe today is the day they complete the flagstone. Still waiting on the fireplace piece so he can finish a corner area. I'm so excited! This week we choose the pergola color. It's coming together!

Prayers and Cheers!

Across the road from the Hammerfest Kirke is an older church built in 1937 called the Hammerfest Church.  It was the only building left standing after World War II. enhance

enhance

We wandered through the cemetery looking at some of the old headstones there. enhance

enhance

This is the Museum of the Reconstruction.  When I looked up the name of the museum, the description read that like most of Northern Norway, towns were razed by the retreating German military forces at the end of the war.  Looks like somewhere to visit if you have time on your next visit.enhance

We took the shuttle back around the bay to the Prinsendam, but stopped to see what this object was nearby.  It's called the Meridian Pillar.enhance

Not being able to read the words on the monument I looked it up.  Lonely Planet says this about it:

Historic Site in Hammerfest On the Fuglenes peninsula, just across the harbour, is the Meridianstøtta, a marble column commemorating the first survey (1816–52) by Russian scientist Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve to determine the arc of the global meridian and thereby calculate the size and shape of the earth.

Back on the ship, we were surprised when the ship left the dock several hours early to let a ship (waiting nearby) take our spot.  Someone in charge had made an error and double booked this dock and that ship needed to be there at 6 pm, not 8 pm! enhance

We watched HAL crew members out at the dock trying to hurry folks along so we could leave.  As soon as we moved away from the pier the other ship slipped right into our spot.  We sailed out further to the edge of the harbor and anchored, and the port agent brought passengers who were left behind out to us on the pilot boat while we were at dinner!  Can you imagine their panic when they saw the Prinsendam was gone?  We heard some of them were enjoying themselves in the local bars although who can afford an alcoholic drink at a bar in Norway?
