I'm sending my son on a honeymoon to san juan in sept., I'd like a really nice hotel on the beach, sorry I know this isn't cruise related, but know yall will help 🙂

Pre COVID would have said Vanderbilt or Concha.

BUT now not so sure and advise to check out all hotels against postings on the current advisor sites

You have three main choices for hotels in San Juan.  Downtown (older buildings with direct access to old city), Condado (just east) and Isla Verde (also called Carolina, just north of airport).  The first has no beaches.  Condado has fair beaches but may have heavy surf.  Isla Verde has an outer reef and several miles of nice beach.  More like a US beach town, with Walgreens, fast food.  All three have great hotels, but with the hurricane a few years back, covid and storms this year you need to look at recent reviews.

We usually stay at Embassy Suites in Isla Verde pre-cruise because it is close to the Pueblo Market (wine) and has breakfast.  Couple blocks from beach.

Yeah Embassy Suites is nice.  Easy walk to beach and lots of restaurants etc.  Intercontinental in Isla Verda is on the beach and beautiful.  Marriott in Condado area is also very nice.  For a honeymoon I'd choose Intercontinental or Marriott.

Our favorite hotel in San Juan is the Intercontinental. We've stayed there several times and will be there again when we take our next cruise out of San Juan. It's near the airport but not close enough that the sound of planes is a bother. They do have a beach but they also have a very nice pool area, with a swim up bar on site. There are multiple restaurants on site and several more within walking distance off site.

When was the last time you were there?  I went ahead and booked the hotel, , I told my kids, for the price I'm paying for 5 days, you could go on a cruise and you'll have ports, food, entertainment included.  But, New Wife is afraid of getting sea sick.  I told her there is medicine for that 🙂 🙂

Sonesta Opens First Resort in Puerto Rico Caribbean Journal (caribjournal.com)

I see it changed brands and had some major renovations, didn't know that until I googled it just now.  It was beautiful 3 years ago, should be even nicer now 🙂

We were there in March of 2020 just before the whole Covid issue became as big as it is. We stayed for 3 nights pre-cruise. We boarded Freedom for her first cruise after amplification which ended up being her last cruise for about 16 months. They were remodeling the hotel while were there but the work being done was not an issue. It looked like they closed a floor at a time to do the work. The hotel was in very nice shape, even before the remodel.

We stayed at the Intercontinental for a few days in 2018 after a TA, really loved it, would be first choice for me.

I've attached a few pics of the beach and pool area which is lovely. Third one is the view from our room.

Does it have to be in San Juan? There are a lot of other beautiful places on the island to stay. For instance, El Conquistador (Waldorf Astoria) Resort in Fajardo is beautiful. Has a casino, golf course, water park, it's own private island with nice beaches and snorkeling. It's also walking distance to the starting point for the kayak tours of the bio bay. If they rent a car, they are also close to El Yunque and the kiosks at Luquillo. If they are not that adventurous and want to stay at the hotel the entire time, the resort has everything they need. The resort is built into a cliff with the main section at the very top and other sections build at various levels down the cliff side.

We had the Embassy Suites  by the airport booked for our original cruise in 2020 that got cancelled. We planned on booking Embassy Suites for our L&S this November but they were completely booked.

So we settled on 2 nights pre cruise at the CasaBlanca Hotel in Old San Juan that has been highly recommended. We are also staying at Courtyard by Marriott Isle Verde for 1 night post cruise. I plan on doing a review so I will report back on these hotels. It will not help @hollon in time but maybe someone else.
