tjcox9 Posted September 20, 2021 #28 Share Posted September 20, 2021 We were in Lerwick on the Prinsendam in 2008. The Scottish Coast Guard asked if they could do a practice rescue with us. So, the deck was cleared and they got to practice. It was great to watch the maneuvering. Other than that, it was a very gray day and Barbara told us where to go for really good fish and chips. I remember it as a gray town on a gray day.

Quartzsite Cruiser Posted September 20, 2021 #30 Share Posted September 20, 2021 (edited) Good morning from what will be a hot day in central Texas. This will be quick, so I can tackle the yard before it gets too hot. Pepperoni pizza is my favorite, but we usually add a lot more to a pizza except anchovies. Punch day and gibberish day will mainly be ignored. We'll pass on the meal and the drink. The wine sounds nice, but pricey Like the Cicero quote. Just try not to over think things. @mamaofami Carol, good picture of you and Sam. Glad you had a good day together. @Seasick Sailor Joy, I hope the medicine is working and your're feeling better. Looking forward to seeing you back on the Daily soon. Just as soon as I reposted this, I saw your post. Glad your better and sorry about the thrush. We have been to Lerwick three times, and in 2003. we had to miss it. The Rotterdam was caught in a bad storm between Greenland and Canada for two days, so we had to cut one port. Our first visit was in 2009 on the Tathitian Princess, and we took the tour to Scalloway Castle. In 2017, we were in Lerwick twice on the Prinsendam. The first time we walked around town, which being there on a Sunday, meant most stores were closed. The second time, we rented a car and drove around the island. I'll post pictures of our walk around town in another post. These are from our drive around the island. Sumbergh Heat and the lighthouse Jarlshof, the site of the remains of a viking village To get to the southern tip of the island and Sumburgh Head, you had to drive accross the airport runway, so the road was closed when a plane was landing to taking off. Scenery along the road heading back to Lerwich and the part of the island north of town. A couple of interior pictures of Scalloway Castle Scenes from the northern part of the island Lenda Edited September 20, 2021 by Quartzsite Cruiser 31
Seasick Sailor Posted September 20, 2021 #31 Share Posted September 20, 2021 Good morning friends. Thank you Rich for the Daily. I have been feeling very unwell, and now have thrush to boot. Sorry I concerned my sweet CC friends. This infection took me by storm. I need to read backwards to see what y'all have been up to and will check back later. Is Bruno in hospital? Is he ok? We have the 16 guys and wives from the 1st Cav arriving Wed for 4 days. I'm blessed to have 3 wives close that will bring food and snacks and help out. Prayers, Cheers and Blessings. 24

StLouisCruisers Posted September 20, 2021 #33 Share Posted September 20, 2021 We arrived in Lerwick on Sept. 8, 2015 on Caribbean Princess and tendered over to Victoria Pier The first thing that caught our eye was a zebra-striped accommodation barge used to house workers building the Shetland Gas Plant. It's no longer there since the project was completed several years back. We had scheduled a tour of the Jarlshof Ruins and the Hoswick Visitor Center. Excuse the photos taken from the bus window of the countryside. Our driver told us Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick own property here. I have no way of verifying that information, but it would be a perfect place to get away from it all. The Hostwick Visitor Center had a lot of very old radios and other communication equipment, along with textiles and other odds and ends. Seemed an odd collection to me. Most of us thought the scenery outside more interesting so went out to take some photos before time to move on to the Jarlshof Ruins. Scenery like this and this Back in the bus for the drive to the Ruins we saw lovely beaches which were dotted with seals, surprisingly. The guide passed around photos and other information while en route. In order to reach the Ruins we had to cross a runway at Sumburgh Airport! Arriving at Jarlshof Ruins Whew! There's a lot of photos. I will try to post this now and continue with the tour next post. 32

grapau27 Posted September 20, 2021 #35 Share Posted September 20, 2021 (edited) Thank you Rich for today's daily and Roy for today's care and celebration reports. It is 14.30pm 62°F and sunny here. I went to see the doctor first thing this morning and while there the nurse gave me a flu jab. I then did some sales calls and just got back home. I like Pepperoni or any pizza. Punch day has a few meanings but the drink is the best. I know a few people who are quite gibberish. I'm not keen on the food or drink but the quote was interesting. We have never been to Lerwick. Prayers to everyone who need them. Take care and stay safe everyone. Graham. Edited September 20, 2021 by grapau27 23

StLouisCruisers Posted September 20, 2021 #37 Share Posted September 20, 2021 I see Lenda was there on a sunnier day than we were so won't have to post many photos of the Ruins. This photo shows outlines of some of their huts and other buildings. This would have been where the fire was in their rocky home. And some of the walls Leaving the site, we stopped to enjoy a few of the Shetland ponies next to the walkway. I'll pass on posting my photos taken back in Lerwick since that has been covered. We are scheduled to return to Lerwick in July 2022 on Island Princess but who knows whether I will be on that cruise or not at this point. There are too many things that could happen between now and then.❓

Thank you, Rich, for keeping this thread and thank you to all who contribute. Healing hugs 🤗 to those on the care list and cheers 🥂 to the congratulatory list. We were in Lerwick on 9/28/2010 during a TA from Southampton to Fort Lauderdale on the Grand Princess (our first Princess cruise). We took a ship tour that went out to Scalloway where we visited the castle remains. Along the way we saw some Shetland ponies A golf course And nice scenery When we got back into Lerwick, we went to a local pub and had a bite of lunch. DH swears these were the freshest and best mussels he's ever tasted! Now, a bonus for the Garden Club .... Thanks for your photos of Scalloway Castle and your delicious food stop. Your visit there was almost exactly 11 years ago. Time sure flies when you're having fun! 12

NextOne Posted September 20, 2021 #44 Share Posted September 20, 2021 (edited) Growing up, my family attended a church that had a German legacy, and they loved to hold pork & sauerkraut dinners as fund-raisers. I was the family disgrace because I hated sauerkraut! Funny thing, though - now I like it. I'll be off the boards for the rest of the week because I'm flying to Iowa to help my son & DIL (and 2 cats) drive back to MD for a permanent move. Yay! While I'm away, I'll be deciding whether I'm going to go on my NA trip in October or cancel. The latest round of itinerary changes (which I learned about here - still nothing from HAL) eliminates the two ports I wanted to see, and I'm not thrilled with an overnight at Half Moon Cay. But, on the other hand, it IS on a BHB. Decision time! Edited September 20, 2021 by NextOne 24

Horizon chaser 1957 Posted September 20, 2021 #48 Share Posted September 20, 2021 Good morning, all! Now, WILL cc let me post here from my iPad today? At least today I’m not getting the entire first page attached to my reply - that’s a good sign. After two days of cc lockdown, I wrote to cc help. No idea if it worked, but we shall see. The days are interesting. The meal looks good, but we have company tonight and a leg of lamb is waiting to go into the oven. We’ve never been to today’s port. We are back in Chilliwack, enjoying the rain. After a long hot summer of drought, the rain is still a blessing, not a curse. As others have said, it’s Election Day in Canada. We voted in the advance polls, so we don’t need to brave the lineups at the polls today. DD from Saskatchewan is staying with us for a while. I’m going to be very used to having one or the other of my girls around. I’m making the most of it while it lasts! Happy Monday, courtesy of the Monday elevator mat from a much missed BHB!
Cruising-along Posted September 20, 2021 #49 Share Posted September 20, 2021 Good morning all! I'll take a pass on everything today! We had pizza last night, but not pepperoni, which is one of the few things I don't like on a pizza. I've never liked the taste and it gives me heartburn! DH loves it though. We've been to Scotland, but not this port. Thank you to all who are posting photos! Am I the only one who can't see mamaofami's photo? I get a blank screen with a huge - in the middle of the screen. 😞 We will be leaving early in the morning for SeaTac, so depending on CC quirks, internet availability and other things, I may not be able to post much in the next month. Will try to send photos now and then, again if possible. Please stay well everyone!
durangoscots Posted September 20, 2021 #50 Share Posted September 20, 2021 CC does not like me either this morning. Had to log out and log in to reply. I am on my computer. Have to comment on Lerwick. I was there for several weeks doing archaeology. Drove my car from London to Aberdeen and took the car up to Shetland via ferry. (I loved my bright yellow Mini). Driving on and off the ferry was a real experience. Arrived in Lerwick on a dark, grey late September morning and I drove straight off the ship and stopped at a shop to buy a couple of wool sweaters which I still have and wear at times. I stayed in Lerwick with a nice lady who ran and bed and breakfast. One morning when I came down to breakfast she had the radio on and they were giving the weather forecast which I could not hear well. Asked her what was said and she replied the announcer was from the north and she could not understand him. Loved the time I spent there and would like to go back - maybe at another time of year. It was cold!!!!! Susan
