Quartzsite Cruiser Posted September 30, 2021 #26 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Good morning from central Texas, where we did not get any rain yesterday. About 2 pm we had a 92% chance of rain and thunderstorms at 10pm, but by six pm the chance of rain was 15%. That's Texas weather in a nutshell. Quite a colledtion of days. I'll celebrate Maritime Day and I try to be prepared -- operative word is try. 😉 The quote is interesting. The drink sounds good, but will pass on the wine and the meal. My one attempt to cook acorn squash was a total failure, even following the directions exactly. @StLouisCruisers Sandi, glad you're feeling better and enjoy your visit with Brenda. @mamaofami Carol, I know you are excited. WELCOME HOME SAM ! and HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY JARED ! We have been to Hilo many times, several in pre-digital days. The most memorible was in 1996 on the old Star Princess (hadn't discovered HAL yet) the captain spent a long time off the coast about midnight so we could watch the lava flowing into the Pacific. My pictures are a combination from different cruises beginning in 2007. Here are three pictures of Rainbow Falls taken different years with different water flows. Only once have we not rented a car in Hilo. In 2007, did a tour to Mauna Kea and the observatories on the mountain top. The was taken from the ship on one visit. There is snow on Mauna Kea and you can see the observatory above the snow. Some of the telescopes. The one that is open is a solar telescope. On another visit we drove north along the coast and stopped at the Waipo Lookout. There is a view of the valley where the residents farm. The road into the valley is very steep and we did not want to attempt it. The coast north of Hilo Thurston Lava Tube with one of the entrances The Volcano Observatory and Jagger Museum which were closed this summer and will probably be permantely closed due to the instablility of the caldera rim. Both were damaged by a series of earthquakes just before the caldera collapsed, Before the last big eruption of Kilauea, we were there on February 25. 2017, and lava was erupting in the caldera. This is a little fuzzy as I had to zoom a long way. We also drove to the end of the road where lava had gone into the Pacific over the years. I have a few more pictures, but they will have to be in another post since this one is getting long. Lenda 33
kb4683 Posted September 30, 2021 #27 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Good Morning Dailyite Family! Thank you to Rich, Roy, the F&B Department, and everyone else who contributes. Hugs to those on the care list and cheers to the celebratory list. @mamaofamiWelcome home to Sam. I have been to Hilo several times starting back in 1970, but only twice by ship. First time by ship was on Celebrity Mercury, March 5, 2009 (LA/Hawaii/LA). We rented a car and drove out to Volcanoes National Park. It was a dreary day so didn't take a lot of pictures. After that we drove over to Volcano Golf & Country Club for a couple of pictures and souvenirs. On the way back to Hilo, we stopped at the lava tube. Our second time by ship was March 31, 2013, Star Princess (LA/S.Pacific/LA). Again, we rented a car but went up the East coast of the island. Once back in Hilo, we stopped for a bite of lunch. Check out that killer Bloody Mary! Tuna poke for him Caprese bruschetta for me -- no thanks to raw tuna🤢
NextOne Posted September 30, 2021 #28 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Good morning! Welcome home Sam!!! I'm conducting my personal Prepareathon as I try to get ready for my Maritime Day next Wednesday! My boarding time in San Diego has now been delayed to 3, so I'm wondering if I have time for a visit to the zoo.... Hilo is a nice town and has a very interesting tsunami museum, and a child-size aquarium. We enjoyed wandering around the town & had a nice plate lunch on our last visit. BTW, did you see that Kilauea erupted yesterday? Thanks for the Daily and the lists. Prayers are raised for all that need them. The moving van is scheduled to arrive with the kids' belongings today, so I'll be spending the rest of the day up at the apartment sorting boxes. Fun times, and I'm happy to help! Stay well! Rare TiogaCruiser Posted September 30, 2021 #30 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Good Morning All It’s really feeling like Fall here. Now all we need is some rain. Maybe I should wash my car, and the windows……. Or maybe it might happen in a few weeks when we (hopefully) tear up what remains of the back yard. I have 3 requests for bids out and nothing back.☹️ In recognition of Mud Pack day, a brief video: If it does rain here, our pooch will likely do the same.😱 Off to run errands and visit Dad. Have a great day everyone! 23

Because of that I've never prepared it or ordered it in a restaurant or on a cruise ship. Am I missing something? You should try it. Sounds like there was some ongoing fermentation happening. That might account for pressure buiding up inside the bottle. Poor quality control. Wines that undergo pressure (mostly sparkeling wines) compensate with thicker glass bottles to withstand the pressure. A cab and most other wines should be stable before bottling. 17
Sea Viewer Posted September 30, 2021 #35 Share Posted September 30, 2021 We spent 4 weeks in Hawaii in 2008. Flew from Island to Island. On the Big Island I had a great hike over the lava fields, it was really interesting seeing how the lava had flowed. My husband is always on the lookout for "danger" and I have a collection of photos of warning signs from our travels! Me, I'm just looking for adventures.

lindaler Posted September 30, 2021 #38 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Good morning all. Thanks for caring about my fall. I do feel better today. I am so glad Sam is coming home. I loved my visits to Hawaii. I love acorn squash. One of the favorites with my kids as each one got their own. Thanks everyone.
Sea Viewer Posted September 30, 2021 #39 Share Posted September 30, 2021 @richwmn Thank you for including port of the day in The Daily. I don't always post pictures but if I have visited the area I do look at my photos. It is a good reminder that despite not being able to do my planned post retirement travel, I have been fortunate in being able to visit so many places in the world so far. Hopefully we all will be able to travel to our bucket list destinations soon🚢
smitty34877 Posted September 30, 2021 #40 Share Posted September 30, 2021 DSIL is the handsome fellow next to the woman in green. I loved seeing him play the ukelele onstage while we spent those lovely seadays going to Hawaii. He even convinced us to try kareoke up in the Crow's Nest. 25

bennybear Posted September 30, 2021 #44 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Hilo is a good choice today as Kilauea started erupting again today. The Big island is usually our winter home, so hopefully we will return in the new year. 30
Marmot@Sea Posted September 30, 2021 #45 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Good Morning. Another rainy day here. Some how it seems appropriate today with it being National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Below are photos of our day in the port of Hilo in 2011. Quartzsite Cruiser Posted September 30, 2021 #47 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Earlier, I did not mention Canada's new national day of rememberance. It is good to remember and try to reconcile what happened to the First Nation children. I wish the US would do the same for the Native American children who were forced into schools where they were taught to forget their language, religion and heritage. The Navajo children come to mind since we spend so much time in Arizona, but there were not the only ones. Thank you to all who have posted pictures today. They show all the varied things to do and see on the Big Island, and the varied interests of the Dailyites. I have a few more pictures from Hilo, but I cannot find any pictures of downtown Hilo. I am sure I took some pictures of the town, but about that time iTunes was giving me trouble putting my pictures on my iPad. Since iTunes added pictures that were not in the folders I downloaded, I suspect it may have deleted others. I guess we'll just have to take another cruise to Hawaii. We had tried several times to visit the Imiloa Astromony Center, but by the time we got there it was closed. In 2018, we finally made it on a day they were having an open house and food fair. Here are just a few pictures from the cdnter. In 2017, after visiting the Volcanoes National Park, we turned off the main highway to town and headed to a road and neighborhood that had been covered in lava during one of the eruptions. This is what we saw from the end of the road, but decided we did not have time to hike out there. From the end of the road, we turned toward the coast and found this local place. We followed the coast toward Hilo until we realized we needed to turn around and retrace our route since the coast road did not go all the way to Hilo. A couple of scenes along the coast. Finally, some pictures from various sailawys. Lenda 30

XBGuy Posted September 30, 2021 #49 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Oh boy. Another port we have visited--more than once. Most of the pics that I have are reruns of many that have already been posted. However, on our last visit we took a cab downtown, walked around a bit and had lunch. On our way back to the taxi stand we found a brass band performing in a nearby park. 22
StLouisCruisers Posted September 30, 2021 #50 Share Posted September 30, 2021 Wow, lots of great photos today from all the unique and interesting places to visit when visiting Hilo. I have only one photo to add - more offerings to the Goddess Pele. Fruit, flowers and the bottle of what might be gin. I hope these people got the protection and forgiveness they asked for.🌺 Still feeling well so that's encouraging. And Brenda and I chatted for hours! No moving vans showed up though to our disappointment. 😇
