Happy afloat Posted October 2, 2021 #1 Share Posted October 2, 2021 Good morning all, Not posted for a while. Hope everyone has managed to keep safe and well over the last 18 months. We paid for our November cruise to the Canaries the day before the volcano erupted. Opinions are invited on the likelihood of cruises to this area being able to continue, nothing on p&o or any travel website we've seen provides any info. Too soon to speculate, perhaps? Harry Peterson Posted October 2, 2021 #2 Share Posted October 2, 2021 For us, La Palma is one of the nicest of the islands, and I really feel for the people there. I imagine cruises there may be subject to a changed schedule, depending on what happens, but the Canaries are a delightful place to visit, and from our point of view I'd be happy with any change in the circumstances. I’m on the October 31st sailing which is scheduled to call at Le Palma. I’m not expecting that port stop to happen even if the volcano calms down soon. I read this morning that the island has been declared a disaster zone by the Spanish government, and I think it will be quite a while before the island recovers. It would be good if we could at least do a sail by though. I can’t see any reason why the other islands would be affected. Les.

Someone posted that we had been changed to Lansagrotty. However this may be speculation as, like you, I have seen no conformation. BTW you cannot miss me on my scooter, usually in the casino after second sitting. Or sitting somewhere with my IPad. john watson Posted October 2, 2021 #5 Share Posted October 2, 2021 It will help the economy if you dock and I should imagine if it is feasible you will. Regards John

Gan Canny Dai Hi Dai, I would very much like to meet for a drink onboard after spending a lot of time reading all your posts over the last few years. I know from experience though that it is very hard to “bump” in to someone even when trying very hard to do so, so if you feel like giving me a call in C629 we could arrange something. I must warn you though, I’m not a Geordie by birth! 😂 Les.

jeanlyon Posted October 2, 2021 #8 Share Posted October 2, 2021 I would doubt very much if any cruise ship would dock with this going on. Black ash everywhere, toxic fumes. I read that all excursions and holidays to the island are cancelled. Also it doesn't look like stopping any time soon.
majortom10 Posted October 2, 2021 #9 Share Posted October 2, 2021 I cannot see any cruise line taking the risk to staff, passengers or the ship itself by docking at La Palma and the risks involved and I would certainly not be very happy if I was on the ship if they did. We have a cruise in November with Cunard that fortunately doesnt call at La Palma and do not know as yet with any other islands will be affected. The primary concern is the welfare and safety of those that live there and the unimaginable conditions they are going through losing their house and belongings.
john watson Posted October 2, 2021 #10 Share Posted October 2, 2021 We docked at Haiti after the 2010 hurricane as soon as it generally opened up. Sad but people need recovery in these situations. Regards John
Happy afloat Posted October 3, 2021 Author #11 Share Posted October 3, 2021 We did the Caribbean in Jan 2018 following the hurricane the year before, but had plenty of notice regarding itinerary changes. Different now obviously, as it's an on going occurrence. Having seen the news this morning, it's looking like the situation is worsening. I suppose how it affects the other islands is down to wind direction etc. Can't begin to think what those poor people are going through. Aren't we lucky that bad weather is the worst we've got to complain about?
Son of Anarchy Posted October 3, 2021 #12 Share Posted October 3, 2021 I think the difference is that hurricanes last for only a day or so at that particular location. Then the clean up commences and decisions can be made as to what can and can't resume. Volcanic eruptions can continue for weeks before cleaning up can start, occasionally if at all. Snow Hill Posted October 3, 2021 #13 Share Posted October 3, 2021 (edited) Two new vents have opened up with lava pouring out, some concerns that this will take another route to the sea straight through a populated area, so likely further evacuations other side of island will be required. The 1949 eruption lasted around 6 weeks, volcanologists are not predicting how long this eruption will last. TUI have cancelled all flights to the island until 7th October and review whether further cancellations will follow. davecttr Posted October 5, 2021 #18 Share Posted October 5, 2021 I would work on the principle that Ventura won't be calling there. The eruption could continue for weeks/months and there is volcanic ash fall over parts if not all of the island. apart from some excursions, and the ones to the south of the island will not be running? there is not all that much to do in the capital except walk ashore for an hour or so. Sounds great - lucky you going for a month. I always feel Lanzarote has such a lot to offer. We love it and keep going back for land holidays - in fact in four weeks time, all being well.
