My husband died on the Discovery Princess

My husband of 47 years and I went on our 45 cruise to Alaska on the Discovery Princess. It was a fantastic cruise. But a lot of rain, But we made the most of it. After our stop in Skagway my husband said he was short of breath.  He thought it was his COPD because his doc changed his meds just before we went on the cruise. We took it easy the rest of the day . We had room service in the cabin. The next morning my husband woke me up to say he needed oxygen (which he doesn't ever use) because he was having trouble breathing and having chest pains. I called 911 on the ship. They were there in less than 5 minutes. They took him to the medical facility. I had to take a rapid Covid test before I could see him . When I went in they said he had a heart attack.. He was still saying it was his COPD. They were making plans to have an ambulance meet the ship in Victoria. The Captain sped up the ship to get into port hours earlier than planned.  But while still on the ship his heart stopped .The doctor and nurses heroically tried their best to save him . Using CPR for a long time. But they were not able to save him. So he was gone too soon at age 67. The response was amazing. And I will always remember how hard they tried. It was a nightmare. Having lost my loving husband that I had been with since 15 and married at 18. We have two amazing sons and a Grandson. Having to stay on the ship with him in the morge . Luckily the Captain was able to keep him with us , and when in Seattle I had to arrange for a crematorium to pick him up from the port. There is a lot more detail I wont go into about the process. The Captain was amazing and kind . The medical staff was heroic. Thank you so much. No travel insurance so I was handed a $7,800. bill to be paid (put on my credit card) before I got off the ship. Which  I expected. Jim died Aug 20 2022 doing what he loved

also sorry for your loss.  Did he happen to have medicare and/or a medicare supplement?  only asking because I had a medical situation on board ($1,200) which, like you, we had charged to our on board account.  Our medicare supplement paid 100% of the charges, no deductible.

I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you. It must have been so very difficult for you on the ship.

He looks like such a kind man.  Hold onto all those beautiful memories.
Prayers for you and your family.

Very sorry for your loss.

And I agree with voljeep.  I am sure the financial aspects are the last thing on your mind but it's worth submitting to Medicare.  In some cases they will pay for care on a ship (see page 53 of the Medicare handbook under "Travel").

Sending good wishes to you and your family.

Oh my gosh, I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine how you must be feeling.

It's good to read that the Princess medical crew was so quick and tried so hard to save your husband.

Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
