The Fleet Report and Daily for Saturday March 18th, 2023

We have been to Corinto and to Leon.  Our first stop was in 2015 on Statendam.  One time to Leon was enough, as there is not much to see.  In 2020, we stayed in Corinto both times on our b2b Panama Canal cruise.  Corinto is not the greatest port, but we felt safe, and the people are friendly.  We took one of the bicycle taxis for a tour of the town, then walked around a little.  The stop of the west bound portion of the cruise was on a day the town was having a fiesta, which we found interesting.  You can call me odd, but I actually enjoyed Corinto more than I did Leon.  You just need to remember that Nicaragua is a very poor country.

I think HAL and other cruise lines stop there to help boost the economy.

These are some pictures from Leon.  You could go on the roof of the church, which DH did, but I stayed in the square which was hot.  To walk around the roof on the path that was laid out, you had to take your shoes off.

Our last stop on the tour was the steaming mud pots with the volcano in the background.

These are some pictures from Corinto.  Both days, we were only off the ship a little more than an hour.

Thank you Ann, Debbie,Dixie,Sandi and Vanessa every day for being the backbone of this wonderful thread with your amazing Contributions.

Thanks to Lenda for all of your photos daily which are extremely helpful in helping me decide which ports to visit that I have not already visited.

Best regards to all my friends on here.

Good morning everyone.  Awkward Moments Day?  I have plenty of those.  The Goddess of Fertility has her place. Good quote, food and drink.  We’ve been to Corinto a number of times — went to Leon once.  It’s a tough port stop imo.

We have the deepest respect for those who make the supreme sacrifice.

We had a nice dinner with DD’s family last night for St. Patrick’s Day.  Good food and Irish band.

The past week was full of health maintenance tests — now completed.  If anyone out there is working on cholesterol, it was very encouraging to find that after really working on diet for several months, nothing was flagged this time.  My doctor kept saying it’s hereditary and I need statins.  I knew better — that my diet was crummy.  So even with the holidays and a cruise during that time period, got it done!

It’s going to be about 78 degrees here in San Diego today.  First warm day in quite awhile.

Thanks everyone for all the contributions to the Daily.  Wishing everyone a great Saturday!

I think some improvement but still dragging me down.  Your second meme brings back a memory.  Shortly after joining the fire department I was invited to visit the 911 center.  He had one interesting story I remember.  He tells of dispatching a call one night with a new fire officer,  He told him something like "take a left at my brother's place", and the officer was very confused.  While firefighters try to be very familiar with the area they serve sometimes it doesn't happen immediately.  My Brothers Place" was actually a very popular bar.

Good Saturday Morning Dailyites!  I am not late, but I started reading, and saw all the mention of events yesterday,  I went back tor catch up from yesterday.

DH told me to make sure he was up to watch Practice 3 of Formula 1 but after 3 attempts, I gave up.

So it's on, but I don't usually watch practice, just qualifying, and it's Saturday, and he can watch the recaps later.

Have you ever seen the movie, based on a true story called Under Fire.  It is the story of the attempted and somewhat successful take over of the government of Nicaragua?  It starred Nick Nolte as a press photographer and reporter,  and his boss, played by Gene Hackman.  Nolte is trying to get his boss to understand that what was happening in the country was not very peaceful, and they are driving through a town, asking for directions, and the military shoots and kills his boss.  Well, in real life the boss, was a friend of my fathers, so I really have never had an urge to go to that country.  The music from the film is fantastic.  Every time I play it for some one they are intrigued. You can hear it on Youtube.  Two  years ago I found 3 copies of Under Fire at Dollar tree, and yes, I bought them all.

And in regards to yesterday, I too have done the Atlantis submarine in Grand Cayman, listed by DH as number 1 excursion ever....I do suffer from claustrophobia, but it was so beautiful, for an hour of my life I put the fear aside.  I cant even watch DH play escape the room on the computer.  My hands sweat.

Heights, enclosed spaces, and mad dogs.

I hope you all had a great St. Patrick's Day.  I had two call backs left near the end of my shift last night, and a non call back actually answered, and bought 5 concerts for 3 people, and I ended up with over 2800 in sales this week, so even though it felt slow this week, I didn't do too badly.  But I am going to lower my hours to 5 hours per day, and if I go over because I am on a sale, they have to pay.  I had been splitting the day up with 4 hours, than a mandatory break, then come back and do two hours for a total of 6 hours per day, but at 5 hours, I don't have to take a break, and I seem to do better.  I di however miss the two call backs that I had scheduled.

Years ago I was in a house and had a small fire in the kitchen. I got it out, but called 911 so that the fire department could make sure I got it all. They asked for a cross street and I gave it to them. The truck arrived quickly (the station was about a mile away). I asked why they needed the cross street and the Captain that answered said he didn't because he had known a family living in the house and played there when he was a kid.

Good morning,

It is a brisk March morning in Kansas. I will pass on the lamb stew and substitute beef today. My hats off for those who made the extreme sacrifice.

I am amazed at how much everyone has traveled.  I enjoy the pictures. Thanks to everyone who keeps this going with shares, pictures and jokes.

Have a great Saturday!

Hi friends! Sorry I've missed a few days -- have to go back and catch up. Lots of doctor visits happening.

I've had my full share of awkward days, particularly the one at work when I hit "reply all" instead of just "reply." Oh yes, that caused some ruffled feathers...

We took an excursion in Nicaragua that arrived back to the ship two hours late because of road construction. We had an armed escort both ways, and on the return trip the guards made the road crew stop so we could pass. They were afraid we'd be too exposed. We were glad to get back on the ship!

My November ER visit continues to be the "gift that keeps on giving." The original cause was AFib, but the echocardiogram they did at the same time revealed a leaky mitral valve - officially "mitral regurgitation." It's taken four months, but I finally got a decision from the cardiologist on how to proceed. Minimally invasive surgery to repair the valve is recommended, but now I have to speak with a surgeon. I have no idea what their scheduling is like, and am really afraid that I'll have to cancel the July Voyage of the Vikings. I have insurance, but I REALLY want to do the cruise. Fingers crossed & prayers raised that it will all work out!

Wishing everyone a happy & relaxing weekend!

Roy, I'm glad you have noticed some improvement.  Several years ago, our DSIL who was in his 30s at the time and in good shape, had pneumonia.  It took him quite some time to fully recover and get his stamina back.  It sounds like you are headed in the right direction now, so just hang in there, and take it easy.

Graham, thanks for your nice comments.  I'm glad my pictures and comments can help you decide about various ports.  We have been lucky to have been able to make something good out of even the less desirable ports.  There are only a few we really have not desire to see again, but we wouldn't not take a cruise because of one bad port.  We could always make that day a "sea" day.

Edi, sorry you will need surgery to repair the valve.  Maybe, they can work around the cruise so you don't have to cancel.

Good morning all,

We have a beautiful, windy day. I’ll have to figure out how to get some spray painting done for my table decorations project for the upcoming tea.

The wine raises an interest here, and I may swing by our Total Wine as it is in stock.
@marshhawk thanks for the info on the sun shorex. DH has that scheduled for next month while I go snorkeling. He doesn’t like swimming off a boat, and there’s no way I’m gonna get in a sub.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Thanks for the input on corinto. We have that shorex to Leon & the mud pots booked. I was just contemplating getting coloring books and crayons for the kiddos and bringing them in my backpack. I do remember Captain Albert talking about that port and the issues with customs. So I’ll think on that a bit more. Any thoughts anyone?

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

We all have some awkward moments, but hopefully not many. I'll pass on the goddess of fertility and supreme sacrifice brings to mind all the military and law enforcement officers who gave all. I like the quote. The meal looks interesting. Pass on the drink and wine.

I haven't been to Corinto.

It's sunny today after lots of rain yesterday, but staying in the 30's with some possible snow showers this afternoon. I got 8 hours of sleep! I have no plans other than doing things around the house. But everything is hurting these days; knees and back mainly. Not sure what that's all about or if it's weather related.

@StLouisCruisers Thanks for our start today and the Corinto photos. Good luck to Ren and his team on their games.

@rafinmd I hope your improved sleep helps your energy level too.

@smitty34877 I do hope Tana and the aide develop a comfortable relationship.

@kazu I hope all your seedlings survive. Since I'll be going away soon, I can't start or plant anything.

@dfish Growing up my DM made lamb at Easter, but with lots of garlic and not mint jelly. It was good. Many people cook lamb until it's too done and then don't like it.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Thanks for the photos from Corinto and Leon.

@grapau27 Wow, lots of cruises in your future.

@AncientWanderer Good job on getting the cholesterol down! I just stopped my statin (with permission from the Cardiologist) to see if some of my muscle aches would go away.

@marshhawk Congrats on the sales.

@NextOne Prayers for the surgery and that you get to go on your July VOV cruise.

Prayers for the Care List and a Toast to the Celebration List.

Be well everyone.

Our province is still reeling from the loss of these two young officers,  one was taken to the hospital where his pregnant wife was working.   So tragic and the shooter was only 16.

Good morning! Survived the storms that passed through yesterday evening and now it’s a windy 46 degrees and will only reach a high of 59 today. Not good for the spring breakers.
I’m definitely aware, humbled, grateful and mournful for those who have made the supreme sacrifice.🙏

it will be weird watching DW sail away on the Rotterdam today. First time we have not sailed together.

@rafinmd have you recovered from your bout of pneumonia or is it still dragging you down? Just curious.

@RedneckBob good to see your humor after such a let down yesterday. Pray all works out.

Haven’t put much thought of what I will do today. Sure won’t be going outdoors in my present wearing of shorts and polo shirt. Maybe this cold front wind gust will let the oaks shed their remaining leaves.
Time for a second cup of coffee. Sandi thanks for getting up so early and getting the Daily started. Your loyalty is appreciated but it’s OK if you sleep in now and then.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Someone said a few weeks ago on this thread that humor was the best form of medicine, or something like that.

By the way, thanks a lot for giving the world directions to my house 😀 !!!

A little while ago, I remembered that we had been to Corinto four times.  It was in 2014 on Veendam, that we did the tour to Leon.  In 2015, we did a tour to the Fore de Cana rum distillery while in Corinto.  It was an interesting tour.  I looked for my pictures of the tour, but the file for Corinto that day was empty.  My best guess is they were also in the group that were deleted from my iPad when it was updated with a faulty update.

When we were there in 2020, there was no mention of the school or about bringing school supplies.  I'm not sure what the situation is now.

A funny note -- a few years ago, I was reading a Ruth Ware murder mystery -- the one with a wedding on an island -- and everyone in the wedding party was drinking Whispering Angel rose.  I figured the sales must have shot (no pun intended) up after that!

Good morning all!

Today we'll be watching the grandsons do their derby car race with the Scouts.  Afterwards we may go into Seattle to HAL's Alaska Cruise & Travel Show.  We went last year and it was entertaining, so we'll see if we decide to go again.  We may just pop in and enter the "win a cruise" and head back home...

Yesterday's neighbor-lady firepit gathering went very well, we chatted for almost 4 hours.  It was warm enough (low 60's) that we almost didn't need the fire, but agreed it added some ambiance lol.  As always, people walking by stop and chat too, so a good way to meet new people in the neighborhood.

Lenda @Quartzsite CruiserI wonder if we were on the same cruise in 2015?  We were on a 2-week South America cruise out of Lima on the Statendam.  I believe it left Lima on March 30.

We didn't stay Corinto, we took a tour to a rum factory that day.  We enjoyed that 18-year-old rum for many years. 😉

I hope asking this isn't too painful but is this the same surgery DH had just before me?  I have a feeling that if you feel up to going on your cruise doing the surgery after the cruise will not cause any additional problems.

Thanks, Roy! It's okay - DH's surgery was to rebuild his ankle after it was eaten away by cancer, so very different. Mine should be much less severe, and the recovery should be relatively quick. Still counting on that cruise!!

@marshhawk Congrats on the sales.

@NextOne Prayers for the surgery and that you get to go on your July VOV cruise.

Prayers for the Care List and a Toast to the Celebration List.

Be well everyone.

Vanessa, DH has had a lot of trouble with low back pain since he started statins.  That's why I really gave it my best effort.  I found there are still plenty of good things to eat that don't have much saturated fat or trans fats.  Wishing you success!

Insurance might be an issue Roy @rafinmd.

When I got home after my heart attack (18th December 2019) we phoned our insurance company who immediately cancelled our policy.

My doctor let me fly out to Spain 4 weeks later but we had to pay quite a bit of money for my medical issues with a different specialist medical insurance company.

Graham.

I am not a regular, but sometimes I check in to see what tasty recipe is posted! You are a very tight warm group of friends.

I had to comment on todays port. On our Holland Panama cruise some years back, we also stopped at Leon and Corinto. It was my worst port ever.

They  first took us to a local open air food market. At one stand, the man was holding up two little live lizards bound with twine. The poor little fellows were wriggling their heads and tails frantically trying to get loose. Apparently they can be someone’s dinner.

I was gagging so hard, I had to leave. Later the tour included lunch. We had a choice of chicken or something else. While everyone else ate happily, I was NOT going to trust anything!
I had another experience while there but since this is a family board I will not repeat it.

I will never return there. As mentioned, the only reason it is a port of call must be for humanitarian reasons.

Oops.  I confused your DH with @StLouisCruisers DS and the complications she had,

If your surgeon decides on a Mitral Clip that should be a really easy recovery.

Good afternoon, it's very cold, snowy and windy here today.  It was not a good week for me to get my walks done!  I like the quote today, I've organized a sewing class for 6th graders at our church's school.  I'm finding out that I would not have been a good teacher, I'm better at 1 on 1, rather than a bigger group!  Sometimes I have a hard time describing what I'm doing, I need to demonstrate it instead.

We haven't been to todays port, but I have a cousin who had property in Nicaragua.  Their house looked beautiful, but the area did not seem like a good place to visit.

Prayers, hugs and cheers for all who need them.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend.  K.
