Mr. Boston Posted October 13, 2023 #28 Share Posted October 13, 2023 (edited) Good morning everyone, a gorgeous fall day here in Boston, the kind you wait for all year! Fun collection of days, as a skeptic I’ll celebrate. Silly sayings can be a lot of fun. Eye checkups are so important for maintaining good eyesight. I like the quote and the meal suggestion, I’ll pass on the drink. Finally a port that I have photos of from, our Corfu hike excursion on the Oosterdam last month. Prayers for everyone on our prayer list today. Cheers to everyone celebrating happy events! Olive grove planted by the Venetians. Door for @StLouisCruisers Some beautiful vistas along the way. Tasty snack at a local restaurant. A shrine with an offering of olive oil. Finally, our reward at the beach! Rare ottahand7 Posted October 13, 2023 #29 Share Posted October 13, 2023 (edited) Good morning everyone, Thanks for the Daily Reports @richwmn. It is good to be a skeptic from time to time. John has some silly things he says from time to time. As a late bloomer to get on with my life there is an awful lot of truth in EE Cummings' quote. Pass on the cocktail, pass on the fussy cod dish but the Toscana sounds like a lovely wine. The wine dinner I went to a couple of weeks ago had Jackson Family Wines as an extra treat they poured their specialty line of wines. They poured a Terlato importers Toscana. I liked it a lot so I bought 6 bottles. I got it home and looked it up on Wine Advocate and it was 92 points and keep until 2030, probably the reason I liked it so much it is more Merlot than Sangiovese, better yet it was $19 off from usual retail. Thanks for the lovely photos @StLouisCruisers. Thanks for the Cares list @JazzyV, Vanessa I hope you can get some help for your pain. @mamaofami I am sorry your DH is back in the hospital and to top it off your smoke alarm going off. Please take care of yourself too. @smitty34877 I hope things are going smoothly with Tana's new aide and her health is stable. Prayers for Israel and Ukraine, so much loss of life and homes. Prayers for everyone needing them. We had a nice day yesterday driving about and stopping at my favorite restaurant in town for their happy hour, great $5 a glass sauvignon blanc and they have the best calamari. Plus no need to cook dinner. Our oven is probably on its' last legs. It started making its' beeping sound and two error messages that indicated the mother board for the key pad had failed. I said lets reboot it tomorrow by flipping the circuit breaker. No need, John hit bake this morning and the display started working again. It is 21 years old and it gets a lot of use in this house. We probably need to start thinking of getting a new one because we can't have it going kaput at Thanksgiving. A windy and rainy day but the forecast shows nice weather for next week, hopefully I can get my ferns cut back and my calla lilies dug and dried. I bought Narcissus and Tulips and they are due too. The ground I plant the Narcissus in is so hard the ground where the Tulips go is soft. I hope all the rain makes digging those daffodil holes easier. We got great news from HA stockholder benefit department. Since we are on 3 different bookings for our Eurodam cruise we get $100 onboard credit for first booking and two $250 for our second two bookings, That put a huge dent in the price of the shares. Have a lovely Friday! Nancy Edited October 13, 2023 by ottahand7 29

Rare tupper10 Posted October 13, 2023 #31 Share Posted October 13, 2023 @mamaofami so sorry to hear about your DH's return to the hospital and just what you didn't need is the smoke detector going off all night. Try and take a nap today if possible. It is so sad that so many are ill or dealing with a lot of pain that interferes with sleeping. I read on one of the live from threads here that the Amsterdam is not going to Guatemala but instead is going to El Salvador. Those who are posting said they are not getting off the ship given the situation there. Thinking of everyone who posts on this thread and thank you for all of your great pictures of the ports. I can travel in my arm chair to many places that I doubt I will ever see in person. @marshhawk I hope had a safe flight and transfer to the hotel in Rome. I also hope her cat sitter came through for her. We are waiting for a big rain storm today in very warm South Florida. The weather has been in the 90's. Not much on the agenda today -a visit to get some blood work done and then staying inside to avoid the storms. 28
Rare Nickelpenny Posted October 13, 2023 #32 Share Posted October 13, 2023 Good morning to All! Thanks for the daily and fleet reports. I tend to be a skeptic (I want data and proof) so this is a wonderful day for me. I wear glasses so I cherish my sight and frequently say silly things!! LOL!! Love the quote, the meal and wine sound yummy, I will pass on the drink and never been to Corfu. What a good group of days in history!! A cool morning to start the day. It is presently 60F with a projected high of only 87F. Fall is finally here in the desert. Today is a half day at the Jr H subbing for Resource English. It will be tough (hee-hee) as the teacher has me just taking them to the library. Full day of pay so that is a bonus. The management company is working on getting me a new dryer. Funny, I haven't really dried my clothes outside for such a long time. My clothes are "crinkly" - not soft. I forgot I need to add fabric softener if I will dry them outside and I don't have any. Maybe the dryer sheet in the wash? Didn't go out to the new restaurant but may today. A friend went and she stated it was good. Decisions, decisions. Want to prepare for the eclipse tomorrow. I don't think we will see the ring of fire but maybe. Thoughts for those on the care list and cheers to those celebrating. Have a great Friday the 13th everyone!! Beware of black cats!!
Cruzin Terri Posted October 13, 2023 #33 Share Posted October 13, 2023 I have been to Corfu a few times and can add some different photos. We had a driver the last time we were there by the name of Spiros. He was great. He took us to a little place to have lunch and prepared it himself for us. Bread, tomatoes, feta cheese and wine. It was delicious. 29
Cruzin Terri Posted October 13, 2023 #34 Share Posted October 13, 2023 A quick Good morning before the day gets the better of me like yesterday. I will go back and read the posts. Thank you to Rich et al for the Daily and Fleet Report as well as the lists and recipes @mamaofami I am sorry for all your troubles and prayers for Sam and you. @StLouisCruisers Happy Anniversary to your Daughter @rafinmd Welcome Home Lots of things on the agenda today. I will try to post again later. God Bless, Terri 28
kochleffel Posted October 13, 2023 #35 Share Posted October 13, 2023 I say enough silly things already, no need to have a special day. The code with Romesco sauce would be OK with me. Actual dinner will probably be haddock with peppers sautéed in Greek olive oil. The drink does not sound good at all. A website says that the wine is made from Sangiovese, which isn't grown here, plus some Cabernet and Merlot, which are. I might choose Dr. Frank's Saperavi, sold out at the winery but maybe still in stores. I have been to Corfu, last year on the Norwegian Jade, and I think I might have posted some of these photos before. The Duolingo Greek course was constantly talking about elephants, and I expected to see them roaming all over Greece, but these, at Corfu, were the only elephants I saw. Today I need to take more things to the rummage sale and then try to figure out the donated electronics--whether they work, and before that, what they're supposed to do--but for that I must pick up some batteries. Tomorrow morning I am a service officiant at the synagogue. Later I'm scheduled for a flu jab, then leading a brief online religious ceremony, then attending an orchestra concert. Right now I really just want to go back to bed. 22 2
Quartzsite Cruiser Posted October 13, 2023 #36 Share Posted October 13, 2023 Good morning from a warmer day in central Texas. It is 72F and feels like 72F. There is a 9mph wind with 92% humidity and a dew pint of 70F. Our high will be 82F, so fall is edging back toward summer, but will not go that far. It looks like it will be a good day to trim the Silverado Sage, replant the iris, and touch up the mulch in the flower beds. Then this afternoon, I will get my pneumonia vaccine, and this time I hope it is really the last one I'll ever need. Do I sound a bit skeptical? I was told the previous version of the vaccine was one and done. Silly Sayings can be fun. World sight day is work celebrating every day. The E. E. Cummings quote is a good one. It takes some of us a little longer to grow up than it does others. We'll pass on the meal, but tonight DH will have a different version of cod, and I'll be having salmon. BTW, the ribs turned out very well last night, and there are enough for another night or two. We'll pass on the drink, but the wine sounds worth trying. We've been to Corfu many times over the last 20+ years, and I'll retrieve my pictures shortly. Three more good days in history to celebrate. We've visited the Prime Meridian. Bob Dylan and Simone Biles have many achievements of which to be proud. Simone is still making history with more world titles. @marshhawk I hope Annie and Chuck @catmando had a smooth flight and an easy transfer to their hotel in Rome. @rafinmd Roy, welcome home after two good cruises. @StLouisCruisers Sandi, please wish your DD and DSIL a Happy Anniversary for us. Thanks for the pictures. @mamaofami Carol, I'm sorry that Sam is back in the hospital with breathing issues. I hope he's home soon. Yikes 😱 on the smoke alarm going off at 2 am. @cat shepard Ann, I'm happy you and your sister were safe from the tornadoes yesterday. I hope your arm feels better soon. @cruising sister Lorraine, I hope you get rid of that cough soon. @Heartgrove Jack, thanks for the pictures of Corfu. @Nickelpenny Penny, I hope you get the new dryer soon. @Cruzin Terri Great pictures, Terri. dfish Posted October 13, 2023 #37 Share Posted October 13, 2023 Good morning, everyone! It is a chilly, rainy morning here in mid-Michigan. It doesn't look like there will be any improvement in that situation during the day as the rain is supposed to last all day and the high is 52F. @mamaofami I'm so sorry to hear of Sam's setback. I hope this latest issue is resolved quickly. Today's meal is an interesting one. Bon Appetit usually has unique recipes and this is one of them. Romesco (Catalan pronunciation: is a tomato-based sauce that originated from Valls, province of Tarragona, in Catalonia, Spain. The fishermen in this area made this sauce to be eaten with fish. There is no single correct recipe, rather many variations. In general, romesco sauce is a rich and piquant purée made from sweet dried Spanish peppers along with tomato, garlic, almonds, vinegar, and oil, pounded with breadcrumbs as a binder. Here is the recipe from Bon Appetit: https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/cod-romesco-sauce-hazelnuts-lemon-parsley ROMESCO Step 1 Preheat oven to 350º. Toast hazelnuts on a rimmed baking sheet, tossing once, until golden brown and fragrant, 7–10 minutes; let cool. Smash hazelnuts in a mortar and pestle until very coarsely ground. (Alternatively, you can crush using the bottom of a mug or small saucepan.) Transfer to a small bowl. Stir in 2 Tbsp. oil and season with salt; set aside. Step 2 Place a rack in upper third of oven and heat broiler. Broil peppers and tomatoes, skin side up, on a rimmed baking sheet, turning peppers occasionally, until charred all around and flesh is soft, 12–15 minutes. Step 3 Slip off tomato skins; discard. Transfer peppers to a medium bowl and cover with plastic wrap so they can steam a bit (this extends the cooking and also makes the charred peels easier to remove). Peel peppers (flesh should feel slippery) and discard seeds; coarsely chop. Transfer peppers and tomatoes to a mortar and pestle and smash, covering the mortar slightly with your hands to prevent juices from splattering everywhere, until mixture achieves a saucy consistency. (You can also do this by pulsing in a food processor.) Step 4 Transfer romesco sauce to a clean medium bowl. Add garlic, vinegar, paprika, cayenne, and remaining ¼ cup oil; season with salt and let sit 15 minutes. FISH AND ASSEMBLY Step 5 Preheat oven to 350°. Place fish a rimmed baking sheet and rub with with 2 Tbsp. oil; season with salt on both sides. Bake fish until cooked through and a paring knife can easily slip through flesh, 10–12 minutes. Top with zest while fish is hot. Step 6 Toss parsley, lemon juice, a drizzle of oil, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl. Spoon romesco onto plates, then spoon reserved oily hazelnuts over sauce. Arrange fish over, then top with parsley mixture. For those with a paywall greeting that the kitchen is closed, the ingredients can be found here: https://www.punchfork.com/recipe/Cod-with-Romesco-Sauce-Hazelnuts-Lemon-and-Parsley-Bon-Appetit Here is a similar recipe. https://www.theartofeating.info/new-page-3/ Wishing you all a wonderful day! 17
smitty34877 Posted October 13, 2023 #38 Share Posted October 13, 2023 (edited) Good morning. It will only get up to 64 today and it has been in the forties at night. My DD DH was a confirmed skeptic and some of it must have rubbed off on me. The cod recipe is a possibility tonight as the teenager has requested fish and I think he will like romesco sauce. I have not been to Corfu but it looks like a wonderful place to visit. The PBS series “The Darrell’s” was filmed there as well and I was always stunned by the beautiful scenery. Tana and the new aide seem to be doing well together. I am waiting for my shoulders to relax and working on just getting through the days. We are planning a “gathering” for Lou in the beginning of November and the family has sent us many pictures taken over the years so we could display them there. It will be in one of the Irish pubs in the neighborhood. I am glad we waited a while to do this. I would have still been in shock if there was a service right away. This is a picture of DD’s two black kitties. They are a hoot. Edited October 13, 2023 by smitty34877 31
Quartzsite Cruiser Posted October 13, 2023 #39 Share Posted October 13, 2023 We have been to Corfu seven times, all on BHBs. I'll divide the pictures into two posts. The first post will be from our Noordam III 2002 and 2004 stops and our 2016 and 2019 stops on Prinsendam. In 2019, we stopped in Corfu three times on b2b2b cruises on Veendam, and I'll share them in another post. The coast from the Noordam III in 2002 The view from a hilltop restaurant on the other side of the island in 2002 A church we saw in 2002 The old town and part fo the open area in front of the old town from various stops. The area around the old fort and the entrance to the fort. Lenda 23
Quartzsite Cruiser Posted October 13, 2023 #40 Share Posted October 13, 2023 Now for our three stops in Corfu in 2019 on Veendam. The first stop we rented a car and drove around the island. The other times we took the Ho-Ho and did one loop each time. Our drive on July 11, 2019, took us to Roda and Palaiokastraitsa and across the island. Heading out of town Roda Some cruisers stop for coffee or beer, but we stop for gelato when in Europe. Palaiokastraitsa Some random pictures from the two Ho-Ho loops. A street market There were a lot of ruins along the first loop and this is one. An old windmill For the garden club A sign on the new fort In town We wanted to go through the Achillean Palace, but when we saw the line for tickets, we got back on the Ho-Ho. ger_77 Posted October 13, 2023 #42 Share Posted October 13, 2023 Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily! DH is skeptical about a number of things. My silly saying is: You can grow old, but you don't have to grow up. Sight is so important and needs to be protected. We've got an overcast and breezy day again - wow, the leaves are really coming down, although I can still see a couple of poplar trees behind us that are fully green. If they come down after a snow, that means a real mess for us in spring. A few minutes ago we had about 20 geese noisily flying over the yard in a southerly direction - maybe they know something we don't? DH's daughter and her mother are also on the Nieuw Amsterdam and she messaged us the other day to say that Guatemala was being removed from the itinerary due to civil unrest and rioting in the streets. Today they are supposed to be in El Salvador; not sure that's a much better option, but that's where they are. I mentioned the safety factor to her and was told they were going on a ship's excursion, so keeping our fingers crossed for all of them! @mamaofamiI'm sorry to hear Sam spent so little time at home and is now back in hospital. Hopefully they can get his breathing under control so he can return to you quickly. I know @marshhawkusually doesn't check in once they've left for a trip, but do wish them safety and happiness as they explore Rome before heading to their cruise. In about an hour I'm going to call the physician's office to see what the results were of the x-rays and ultrasound on my shoulder. While watching the ultrasound, I asked the technician what one of the images was; her reply: "That's where Neil Armstrong landed on the moon." Then apologized that she couldn't tell me anything. At all. I understood, but enjoyed her humour. Not a lot on our agenda today, although DH wants to go out and get a few things from the hardware store - it seems he's running out of nuts and bolts, who knew?! LOL I'm going to give the drink a pass, am sure I'd like the wine, and would love to try the menu suggestion, just not today. It's Friday night pizza night at our house, so if we head out to the hardware store late this afternoon, we'll stop by one of the shops and pick up something hot and gooey to enjoy at the kitchen table tonight. And wine. Prayers for everyone who is in need, particularly those in Israel and Ukraine. Cheers to all with celebrations. Smooth Sailing! ☺️☺️☺️ Gerry
Sharon in AZ Posted October 13, 2023 #43 Share Posted October 13, 2023 Good morning and Happy Friday! It’s chilly this morning, at least for me it is, right now 62F. I could feel the fall air last night when I took Blue outside. It’s still hot in the afternoons but you can feel the change. We were in Corfu June 9, 2022 on the Oosterdam. We did an excursion to the Palaces of Corfu which was very enjoyable. The following is what I posted on October 2, 2022 and thanks to Sandi I am reposting. We were leaving the next day for Quebec City and I didn’t have time to post more that day so will do that in another post. I’m on my iPad and will post them from my iPhone which is easier for me. ************************************************* My favorite picture from Corfu. This is from the palace that Prince Phillip was born. 24

StLouisCruisers Posted October 13, 2023 #46 Share Posted October 13, 2023 Thanks to all for the anniversary wishes for DD and DSIL. Much appreciated! Lorraine @cruising sister you story about the dog giving you a disgusted look and moving to the other end of the sofa cracked me up! I hope your cough is better soon. I can sympathize due to my own dratted cough. Jack @Heartgrove great photos today! @Mr. Boston thank you for the door photo! Beautiful photos of your recent visit to Corfu. Nancy @ottahand7 that's an excellent deal with all the shareholder credits. Did you have three booking numbers or just one? Debbie @tupper10 stay safe as well as all Floridians in the dangerous weather conditions this week. Terri @Cruzin Terri thanks for the pictures taken while in Corfu. The snack looks yummy! Paul @kochleffel thank you for your photos as well. Lenda @Quartzsite Cruiser Nice pics of your various times spent in Corfu. Thanks for posting them. Terry @smitty34877 nice to hear the aide is getting along well with Tana. Your planned gathering for memories of your DH Lou sounds like it will be quite nice. I agree that having some time to grieve before the gathering can be beneficial due to shock and stress at the time of passing. Sharon @Sharon in AZ the cat looks "healthy", meaning well fed. Sharon in AZ Posted October 13, 2023 #47 Share Posted October 13, 2023 The first Palace we went to in Corfu was Achillion Palace in the village of Gastouri and was built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria after her son died and later owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II. It is also known for being the set for the casino scene in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only. The Palace was closed for restoration but the views and gardens were lovely. It was raining so a bit overcast. Then we went to Mon Repo Palace built in 1828 as a Summer residence for Sir Frederic Adam, a British High Commissioner. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh was born and baptized there in 1921. The Greek royal family used it as a Summer home. It’s set in a park setting and the walk through the park is beautiful. I’ll have to check the pictures Craig has for some of the park. He tends to take more pictures than I do and his are usually better. 22

durangoscots Posted October 13, 2023 #49 Share Posted October 13, 2023 Downright chilly here today. It was 25F when the dogs and I ambled forth. I need to get Monty's coat out although it is supposed to warm a bit the next few days. No signs of any wildlife which is the way I like it especially when it is not quite light. Little going on here. I am having trouble getting motivated to do much of anything and think I will give myself a day to regroup and organize. Laundry does need to be done and I think the flannel sheets need to go on the bed. My heaters are turned low just now while I wait for an electrician to come and reset the timers which seem to be way off for some reason. I will run my friend back in to have the cataract surgery checked. She admits the operation was very easy and she is not worried about having the other eye done in a couple of weeks. Take care all. Rare ottahand7 Posted October 13, 2023 #50 Share Posted October 13, 2023 @StLouisCruisers Sandi, we had three bookings. We had booked 2 21 day cruises last winter and then took advantage of another "deal" for the 10 day so we have three bookings. @Nickelpenny I doubt you will get soft clothes with more fabric softener. We line dry our clothes at the cabin because we run off solar. Our clothes are fairly stiff and it ttakes a lot of shaking to try to get some of the wrinkles out. We get really spoiled by tumble dried clothes, for the ease and the feel. Those line dried towels sure do absorb well though. I hope you can get a new dryer soon. John did some research on our oven with issues and one youtube said to run the self clean because sometimes it causes the panel to reset. We are cleaning it now, I usually wait for cool weather so it is perfect to do today. 13
