Formal Night Dilemma with No Solution

In my opinion, a man wearing a very nice sports jacket with a tie on formal night looks significantly more urbane than a man wearing a cheaply made polyester suit or a very old tux.

I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to duplicate WVFAN's wedding jacket... and get the dog onboard... :D

You might be right but then I'm pretty sure that Celebrity's dress code guidelines for formal night do not state, "Please show up looking urbane".

I have to go with Ma Bell on this. If someone showed up to my table wearing pajamas, I wouldn't say a word about it and it wouldn't spoil my dinner. However, if someone on a cruise board asked, "is it okay to wear pajamas to the dining room for dinner?" I wouldn't respond that it was fine, cool, just go and be comfortable. I'd say that pajamas didn't meet the dress guidelines and would not be appropriate wear.

I also don't quite get why some people make such a big virtue of being 'non-judgemental'. We all have to make judgements everyday of our lives, judgements about who to trust and who not to trust with our investments, judgements about who would be a good person to spend the rest of our lives with and who would not, judgements about what job to accept and what job to decline...what is the great evil in making judgements?

Actually, I am very judgmental about important things such as people who do horrific things that destroy the lives of other people. I am also very judgmental about a physician's qualifications because I want only the best specialists to take care of me or people that I love. I also won't work with an attorney or investment broker without doing extensive research on him/her first.

When I was young and single I was also very judgmental about who I would marry which is probably why I have been happily married for 35 years.

On the other hand, I am not very judgmental about things that I consider to be superficial such as the way a person is dressed.

Where does one get the right to judge another by his attire. Sounds like junior high!. What if man does not own a tux or suit? He happens to have great sports jackets..clean , sharp looking...When I called to book my next cruise no one checked my wardrobe before they took my money. I did not read the pages of info on the site to see if I 'qualified' for a cruise

We shared a table once with 2 young and 2 middle age men . No suits ( just clean shirts) and we still talk about how we were lucky to have the best table mates on the ship!

We ourselves were in Florida for a while and had no need to take formal attire with us. Our friends suggest we all cruise before we went back north, so off the 4 of us went. We attended formal night well dressed, but no suits!

Personally we never judge a book by it's cover.

Yep, it's hot, hot, hot here too....:D:D

I have never met a passenger on a Celebrity ship that is as judgmental as some of the people who post on this message board.

Thank goodness for that ! :)

I suggest you all send your emails to Celebrity telling them not to judge their passengers. Although I haven't seen it recently, they used to turn people away at the door who were not dressed properly. They have lots of regulations that you might like to read before booking a cruise since they have the authority to put you ashore if you don't comply with some of them. It won't be people on a message board or the other passengers who make the decision.

OK....I am going to go first. I have no problem judging people by the way they are dressed. I am not ashamed of it and I will engage in this activity as often as I like and as frequently as I like as long as people force me to...:D

AND I will gossip with others about them and right behind their backs too...there are plenty of people who love to gossip. On the news it as even a topic of how people feel closer to one another as a result of gossip!

Some of my entertainment on board is to people watch on formal night. Seeing how others interpret "formal" is a very interesting thing.

I have loved my husband for 52 years. After surviving life threatening medical conditions, I realize what is and is not important. :D

Yep, it's hot here in Alabama as well!!!!!!

Can I slightly change the subject? This thread has gone on way too long but here is a thought... Do you think that people dress more formally while on a Mediterranean cruise as opposed to and Alaska cruise or Caribbean etc.

Europeans are extremely sharp, clean, neat dressers so I would assume that people might go to more trouble for a cruise to this destination?

One thing for sure is that we are not going to get out of this life alive.

So its a level playing field for all of us.

Based on what I read here, Alaska has the largest bunch of trouble makers.

I have found that passengers were more formally dressed on our Caribbean Cruises than they were on our European Cruises or the one we took to Alaska. However, the passengers on our Caribbean cruises were also older which may have been a factor.

Most of the time the passengers are well dressed regardless of the destination, but each cruise is an experience of it's own. It's difficult to generalize if one hasn't been on a lot of cruises to the same destination.

Nana,

I took it to mean that most of us have been around for a while and there are probably a lot of us that have faced life threatening situations and know what's important. I didn't think she was being sarcastic.

Ma Bell...the reason I thought it was sarcastic was the "smilie face" she used is described as Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) or I would have perhaps taken it the way you explained, as well.

Thanks for your thoughts!:D....and that is a definite big grin from a happy lady!

So...until then, when I (capital I kick the bucket) I will pick and chose the environments I want to be involved in, and until that time comes I will choose to keep that bar high rather than low.:)
.

Too right, wot! Sod the formal; it’s off to Michaels Club for a dram of uisge beatha (water of life)

Well, I'll have you know, I shower just before we cruise and then shower at least once (twice on hot humid Caribbean cruises) during the cruise, so I'm just as clean and neat, as all those 'Europeans', and all us Americans and Canadians and such, we're real clean too. But I don't generalize, so there.

Sorry I should have said "in my experience"... from my time spent in Italy. You just didn't see "scruffy" over there. The ladies were all in tailored clothing and you just didn't see people out and about in track pants etc. You know what I mean. I know for a fact that we all had to grab the dressiest things out of our suitcase while there so that we didn't look too underdressed.

Mind you, we were not in a tourist location while there so we did tend to look obviously like tourists!

:)
