Hi All,

I know majority of us love the stop in Labadee for the day. I got to thinking, wouldn't it be great if RCI considered an overnight there and we could enjoy 2 full days on the island. They could have entertainment at night on the island in a certain area and possibly a buffet. Just some of my thoughts. What do you think? Happy Cruising!

It always makes me giggle when someone posts a thread like this.

You asked a simple question but there are so many people who won't answer it 'because' or put up a reason for why it wouldn't happen etc. Lol.

You asked a simple question and without thinking about the possibilities and barriers (malaria, more cruise ships arriving, mosquitoes, being moored rather than cruising etc.) which I wasn't asked to do by the OP, I answered it with a yes !!! Ha ha ha.

There are no vaccines for malaria. People going to endemic areas take prophilactic oral medication to help protect them from aquiring the disease.

Thanks, I thought there was a vaccine along with the quinine pills. Back in a former life, I almost had to go to Ghana for work and I remember that there were a bunch of vaccines and pills that anyone going there had to take. Luckily, never ended up going and even more luckily, never had to take all that mess.

If I remember correctly, several years ago some passengers were stranded on CocoCay for the night. Heavy winds came in suddenly and the tenders could not safely transport those still on the island back to the ship. The crew had to get food and supplies on the island for those who were not able to get back on board, and the ship stayed anchored for the night until they could get everyone back on the next morning.

I thought I responded with a pretty clear NO.

I actually didn't enjoy Labadee at all, and although I haven't been there, I am guessing I'd feel the same way about CocoCay.

I like to have an actual city to visit or a sea day, not just a small beach resort.

I agree 100%. But we may be the only two people who feel this way. :D My first time to CocoCay was in May and I stayed on the ship. Had a feeling it would be similar to Labadee, which I could take it or leave it.

Guess I am in the minority, I would not mind an overnight stay at Labadee at all. Once they include off ship activities like beach party, BBq's etc. You can even have an early morning swim in the lovely Caribbean sea before breakfast.

As others have said I dont see it ever happening and I think safety will be the main reason. Can you imagine drunks swimming all over the peninsular (labadee is not an island) at all hours of night

I "LOVE" the idea! In order to miss the bugs and drunks, have everyone on board at the usual time float around at sea and return again the following morning. :):):)

Overnight in Labadee - no thank you! There's nothing to do there except maybe have a bonfire. IMO, if RCCL wants to stay overnight (which they don't seem too interested in), stay someplace with a nightlife like Key West, San Juan, Aruba. Places with bars, restaurants & fiestas that are in easy walking distance to the ship.

We've taken a few cruises where the ship stayed until around midnight in Aruba and San Juan and I had a blast.

We are not beach people and only get off the ship so that my husband can go to the lunch buffet. Actually, he only eats the ribs. I keep him company and wait to eat lunch when we return to the ship. We spend the rest of the day enjoying a very quiet ship.

I would absolutely not book a cruise that had an overnight at Labadee. Personally, it was one of the most boring days I have ever spent on a cruise. I don't know... that was back when we had to tender and it was a bit of a hassle, but it just wasn't fabulous for a variety of reasons, IMO. Sorry. :(

Don't think it would ever happen because of the risk of malaria. Mosquitos like to come out around dusk, if you notice, the ships get out of there usually around 4pm.

I don't think that is a valid reason and here is why I say that. I couldn't give blood for a year because we stopped in Costa Maya and Cozumel in 2012. The red cross has an increased alert in those areas, but the ship still stopped.

Occasionally when ships are chartered or off their normal schedule they wlil do a Labadee run like Oasis did once. That would be a good overnight one. The advantage to the cruise line would be no ports to siphon cruisers money away from the line.

Have you ever noticed ships depart before sunset? One reason for that is partly due to malaria issues on that islands. In order to stay overnight where there is a malaria problem, everyone would have to take preventative meds. The ports where ships stay overnight are not known to have huge problems with malaria, but Hispaniola is, especially on the Haitian side.

It absolutely is a valid reason. The risk in Haiti is very high. Just google it. It's being there overnight where the risk lies.

We love Labadee, but not enough to have to take those meds which have their own side effects.

That's what Disney will be doing for a few of their 4-day double dips that will call Castaway Cay on two consecutive days.

I like the idea. They could for sure try it and see how it works. I agree, I would not like to contract Malaria. How do guests at land based resorts on the island handle this issue?

Maybe do a few cruises a year to mix it up as the number of ports are limited for the larger ships. That too may play into the issue. How do you handle 4,000 people at night. What do they do beyond a buffet/luau type event. They may think the liability high for the reward. People wading into the water/surf loaded with drink.

Still, an interesting idea. We have sailed late out of Aruba before and the city area around the port closed down except for the casino. Most people went back on ship prior to main seating in MDR and did not get back off. Edited by shipshape sam

The late night departures from Aruba were fun. I really like getting to experience a port in the evening. However, when we departed at midnight we found that most things in town shut down well before then. We were on other cruises that left at around 8 PM and that seemed to work out well. My Mom has asked this question before to a person working on the dock and they said that it will never happen because of a security issue with being docked there. We personally plan all of our cruises around Labadee! We love it!
