cjdixon4 Posted August 21, 2013 #26 Share Posted August 21, 2013 You bet and dock right at Navy Pier! It would have to leave on a Saturday because Sundays would be crazy traffic when the Bears are home! :D ...and don't forget if our illustrious President happens to be home for the weekend, fuggetaboutit. Ocean Boy Posted August 21, 2013 #27 Share Posted August 21, 2013 ...and don't forget if our illustrious President happens to be home for the weekend, fuggetaboutit. George C Posted August 21, 2013 #28 Share Posted August 21, 2013 I agree New Orleans is a great city to start a cruise from, I am very happy that they are now sailing year round from Gavelston, which is close ( starting this November)
Rockfordcruiser Posted August 21, 2013 #29 Share Posted August 21, 2013 Keep asking for a ship to cruise the Great Lakes... No luck here...
cjdixon4 Posted August 21, 2013 #30 Share Posted August 21, 2013 Better that he be home than messing up my weekends on Martha's Vineyard. Heck,if driving/parking's tight here in the Chi...it must be INSANE on the Vineyard. My sympathies...:(
mjldvlks Posted August 21, 2013 #31 Share Posted August 21, 2013 Given my home location I really have no sympathy with these discussions. Upset at having to spend more than $10 in gas to get to the port -- seriously?
JasonV1 Posted August 21, 2013 #32 Share Posted August 21, 2013 Two things I can think of: Takes a long time to get out into international waters, and when returning you get into US waters much earlier. I don't think that affects casino hours since LA allows gambling, but I wonder if it has US tax implications. I know that the ships must collect some US taxes on purchases for the trip out of/in from the gulf, so maybe this affects the casino as well. I didn't pay attention to when it opened on my spring break (RCCL) cruise out of NOLA earlier this year. Also, in my experience airfare to NOLA seemed more expensive than that to FL, at least from NC. There are a lot more flights and airports you can use to make it to FL to catch a boat. My favorite is FLL, where you can pretty much see the boats from the airport. Even the "off site" cruise ship parking is very close, and cheap. Mark_K Posted August 21, 2013 #33 Share Posted August 21, 2013 Keep asking for a ship to cruise the Great Lakes... No luck here...:rolleyes:If you mean Royal Caribbean, none of their ships will fit through the locks. Ashland Posted August 21, 2013 #35 Share Posted August 21, 2013 At least you have a ship for part of the year. I understand putting your addiction on hold for 4-5 months of the year is tough, but you could have no RCI ship at all, like many of us. We live 15 minutes from the port in San Pedro. So we are sailing on Princess more now rather than flying to a port to catch an RCI ship - we're still sailing on them, just not like we used to.:( I sailed on PCL on the newly refurbished Sapphire to my beloved MR and tried "hard" to love PCL...What's wrong with me ...I just couldn't...something just felt "off" :(
PianoGary Posted August 21, 2013 #36 Share Posted August 21, 2013 My heart goes out to you for tolerating an unbearable situation...I miss the 45 min drive to San Pedro for an RCI cruise too...What we must sacrafice to cruise RCI :(;):D That's why we're spending way too much money next month to fly to FL! awhcruiser Posted August 22, 2013 #37 Share Posted August 22, 2013 Why not try a different line? For the love of God why does RCI stop cruising out of New Orleans in the summer... looking for a early July cruise and the only cruise ships out of NO are Carnival. ssb Posted August 22, 2013 #41 Share Posted August 22, 2013 Also 3 cruises out of Quebec City in fall of 2014 on RCI. Yes we are considering one of those the repo for b2b to San Diego And we live 20 blocks from the terminal in Galveston.
critterchick Posted August 22, 2013 #42 Share Posted August 22, 2013 I sailed on PCL on the newly refurbished Sapphire to my beloved MR and tried "hard" to love PCL...What's wrong with me ...I just couldn't...something just felt "off" :( Crew on other PCL ships refer to Sapphire as "Suffer." We don't much like her, either. But the Star is an amazing ship with a crew to rival an RCI ship. I'll let you know how we like the Golden - we have a bunch of weekend cruises booked on her.:D
Ocean Boy Posted August 22, 2013 #43 Share Posted August 22, 2013 So I found a great price on the Carnival Magic which seems like a nice ship that leaves on the perfect date out of Texas. Not my first choice, but after about 25 cruises on various lines I have never really been on a bad cruise. So off to the CCL boards.... PG Why not try a different line? You are a bit late with your suggestion.

Max Density Posted August 22, 2013 #47 Share Posted August 22, 2013 And why don't my favorite ships leave from Tampa? Depends. If your favorite ships are any in the Freedom-class or Oasis-class, it's because they don't fit under the Skyway bridge. :(
Rare Tapi Posted August 22, 2013 #48 Share Posted August 22, 2013 I know that for many on this board, the following suggestion may be insulting, but how about trying Carnival during the months when Royal and Norwegian are out of town? Carnival Dream is being repositioned year round to New Orleans and she's a very nice ship. We had a VERY enjoyable sailing on her (and that was after sailing on the Allure a few months prior).
Extra Kim Posted August 22, 2013 #49 Share Posted August 22, 2013 We started our trip to the U.S today, first a train to the south part of Sweden. Spending one night there, Then the train to Denmark. From Denmark we fly to London and from London we fly to Miami. From Miami we rent a car to Fort Lauderdale, spending two nights in a hotel before boarding the ship. And people complain about a five hour drive? I don't even want to start counting hours and monye spent just to get to the ship..
travelplus Posted August 22, 2013 #50 Share Posted August 22, 2013 I would love to see cruises out of San Francisco via the Panama Canal that connects with Trans Atlantic Cruises in the spring. Then in the fall the same reverse trip. That way I'm not stuck on a long flight getting Jet Lag. On cruises my body clock tends to adjust better as you move the clock forwards or backwards one hour at a time and since your body clock is built for one hour per day going Eastward and 1.5 hours going westward the time change is not too bad. Also you can walk up on the deck and of course enjoy the good food. You can't do this on an airplane.
