Exploding coffee cup

Recommended Posts

Just got back from the Navigator of the Seas.

Getting tea from the cafe one night, I poured hot water into a mug. As I started to walk away, the cup exploded and hot water burned the back of my hand and got all over my stomach.

As I was escorted to the medical clinic, the pieces of the cup were taken away. The person walking us down made an interesting remark to me... he said "Yeah, that happens time to time. It's the old cups and some of them got missed."

I was given aloe and sent on my way. It's been a week and the burns are still visible on the back of my hand. Despite being asked my cabin number, I never heard anything after.

Has anyone heard of this before? What should I expect from RCCL in a situation like this?

I can only speak from my own experience:

First of all, someone certainly should have called and followed up with you.

If you felt that the aloe was inadequate, you should have returned to the infirmary and asked for something. (burns will be visible for weeks and weeks before eventually fading. Either see your doctor or go to WebMD and find out the best way to fade burn marks.)

Frankly, you should expect monetary compensation. I will tell you that on one cruise, the french fries in the Windjammer were heaped up VERY high on the serving platter. In serving myself with the tongs, my hand brushed the heating element. I screamed before I could stop myself. An officer rushed over, and wanted to take me to the infirmary. I said that it wasn't that bad; he got me a glass of ice water, and I just used a napkin and soaked my hand in the cold water for a while. It left a nice line burn.

A few days later, there was a $200 credit on my SeaPass account.

I would expect free aloe and not to be charged for the visit. MM, you got $200 for a burn? I tore my ACL and had to pay for the visit and the xrays. :(

Perhaps it is a matter of perceived liability. You don't explain how you tore your ACL, so its hard to say for sure, but maybe there is no perceived direct responsibility or connection with the cruise line for what happened. However, the burn was caused by an RCI fixture that may have been preventable if the French fries were not stacked as high, which may at least be perceived as more of an RCI responsibility or issue. It seems like an act of good will with RCI in that case.

By no means criticizing anyone or anything, trying to spark a debate, or suggesting that I have any answers - just speculating.

It happened to me at Mariner at Cafe Promenade one night. Thankfully, the cup was on the table.

I was half amused, half shocked

On our recent Explorer cruise, I picked up a coffee cup and filled it with coffee. After I got back to the table, I noticed that there was a crack in the cup from the top and half way down the cup. I just carried it back and showed the waiter at the coffee station the problem and he threw away the cup. I can understand how these things happen though. They probably run thousands of these cups through the washing machines every day. It would be impossible to do a visual inspection of every cup.

I had a beer pitcher explode in my hand once at work. Still have the scar. This was 32 years ago. Didn't expect anything then wouldnt expect anything now. Had the bottom of a glass fall off and drenched the customer with soda. I apologized, got him rags and that was the end of it. The point being glass containers do break. I've even had them break at home while filling them. They gave you something for it so I think you are good to go.

....bringing my own mug on our next cruise......

:D:p

I always bring my travel mug for coffee. OP I think a follow up is definitely in order. In fact, I would contact them and ask for a copy of the medical report to keep in my file.

Hope you are doing better now. I believe aloe is a very good remedy to soothe burns. Another thing to do is to put tooth paste on it but that is now useless sicne it should be done wihtin the first few minutes. I have also heard about putting honey.

I have read about these cup explosions happening in everyday life, not because of the old cups or anything, but the slight movement of hot water could cause this. Also be careful when you heat a liquid in the microwave...let it rest for a few seconds before you move it or put a metal spoon in it.

Best wishes!

I think some of you misunderstood the op. They said they weren't looking for monetary compensation....just some sort of communication.

But on that note, op, I do happen to think they could've done something for you. It's not like this was your clumsiness or anything. They could've at least given you a free specialty dinner or something. It would've been a nice gesture. :)

Maybe that's it, I should have known injuries at Quest stay at Quest. :D

That's probably the best solution! :)

I do think a gracious follow-up from management or guest relations was in order.

Burns are extremely painful. I think at the very least a voucher for free specialty coffee at Latitudes or the Prominade Cafe or a bouquet of flowers to the room or something--any small gesture would do.

I believe what happened is that no one followed through because word of the incident was not passed on to anyone hgher in the chain of command. The incident was buried in dozens of small events that happen every day on a cruise ship.

My sympathies go to the OP and I do think the OP is owed at least an acknowledgment that defective cups in the WJ resulted in a burn injury to a passenger. No passenger on a Royal Caribbean ship should ever receive a burn.

I cook a lot, I have burnt myself a LOT and I know how painful that is

I am sorry for your injury, and wanted to take a minute to tell people about the power of aloe, from a "non believer" !!!!!

I've also bought some bottled aloe from St. Kitts on the pier.

I wasn't expecting it to work, the guy "Doctor Nature" said it would...

Obviously I was very cautious but my hubby had QUITE a sunburn and the "Doc" managed to get him to remove his shirt and spent about 40 minutes rubbing pure aloe on his back, arms and face.

I gotta say, I paid $20 for the bottle of aloe and the 40 min treatment and it has saved me soooo many times since returning from home.

I burnt my arm severely on cooking oil and but for a couple spots of darkened skin it is almost unseeable.

I was also bit by a dog, and used it there... the bite healed better then I could have imagined and I was expecting to have to cancel a trip because I was worried about infection. ( heading to Churchill which is very north and very far from great medical care) I went on the trip, because the aloe sped up the healing so much.

Its amazing stuff!!!

Anyways, if you are near St. Kitts, and see Doc Nature, remember my words and grab a bottle of this amazing aloe.

Soooo worth it.

Hope you are feeling better, and yes, I would have expected some kind of call follow up.

Anyway, you mention cafe, and a mug... I'm familiar with the plastic kind of mugs that are in most Windjammers that we've recently sailed on (the orange ones). And have seen some ceramic mugs around the ship.

What kind of mug was it? You indicated that a crew member thought it was one that should not have been in circulation, so I just want to keep an eye out for it. Being a late event, was that at the cafe promenade?

We won't be bringing mugs, so....

And hope you are feeling better.

Comment on using the medical facility. I had a minor accident on the Allure recently - balcony door slid forward and gave me a good whack - it was purely an accident. After applying ice and realizing how my hand had swollen, and hurt like heck, I decided to go to the medical facility.

They were very kind and professional. The nurse took a brief history, vitals, etc. The doctor gave my hand and wrist a very thorough exam, including x-ray. To the best of his knowledge, the x-ray was negative, but he recommended having it re-xrayed when I got home if it was still so painful. He felt once the swelling had gone down it might show more. They wrapped my hand and wrist and gave me pain meds. There was no charge for the visit - said it was an on-board ship accident. Also said to call back or visit again if any questions.

We were home a few days later. I did need another x-ray and now have hand therapy for a deep tissue injury and contusion.

A couple of thoughts - I am now filing with my travel insurance for the visits here at home. I should have asked for a copy of the records/incident report from the ship. I am now awaiting them sending to me. Would have been easier if they had given to me, or if I had thought to ask.

Finally, the care was good. I was very surprised how busy they were - I was the only passenger, but there were 4 or 5 crew members being seen, including our assistant waiter, who had burned her hand. I think we forget they take care of a "small city."

I did not receive, nor did I expect a follow-up call; just figured it was an accident and I was grateful for the care.
