Very nostalgic for those who sailed in those times, for sure...

In 10 - 15 years I will be able to look back think similarly about the current times in which I Am sailing on X.

It is very interesting to see how things changed from way back when to now over the decades.

Thanks to all for the memories and photo captions, lest we 'newbies' forget.

bon voyage

Well I would hope in ten to fifteen years you will be able to say how much better Celebrity is since LLP was sent packing.

I have an old Celebrity Century model ship and I just compared it with my new Edge model ship. The old Century ship model is heavier, longer  and has more detail features of the actual Century  ship IMHO..

Remember being escorted to your cabin by a person wearing white gloves?:D

Dave

This prompted my very first post on Cruise Critic.!  I had been lurking for over a year but I had my first Celebrity cruise coming up and I needed to know if it was customary to tip the escort.

In a healthy world we live our lives lookng foward. I think we already know that Celebrity has missed the ship.

Sorry but my health is nearer the end than the beginning..  The future just ain't what it used to be.

That ship photo above is our beloved Century.

Century is my favorite Celebrity ship, with Galaxy a close second. Century’s main dining room was, IMO, the most beautiful at sea. Remember the teak decks on C Class balcony rooms? They were just indicative of the detail that went into the design of C class ships. You’ll never see that again on a main stream cruise ship.

Our first in 2001 on the Zenith.

Suite 1008.

Butler, Zenobio.

Ocean view, no verandas on Zenith at that time.

Dining room, beautiful, luxurious.

Waiter and assistant, excellent, knew your every need but never hung over us.

Live music during dinner.

Food was excellent in quality, variety and appearance, Michele Roux influenced.

Sommelier for wines and bar attendant for other drinks.

Formal nights, Suits and tuxedos, waiters with white gloves with chairs dressed for the occasion.

There was no need for a special dining venue.

Buffet, trays, gloved waiters to carry your tray or at least bring you to an open and clean table.

Stewards escorted you to your stateroom on boarding and carried your bags.

Stateroom amenities,  there was everything you could need or think of.

Room steward and assistant, almost invisible but seemed to always be there to open your stateroom door.

A true chocolate treat from Godiva on your pillows at turn down. Not a five cent wafer.

Never heard the words "nickel and dime".

Each night the desserts for the evening were presented on a tray and were true delights.

Probably even more that I can't remember after all these years.

Easy to see why we were hooked on cruising and even now 20 years later with things so very different we will still cruise as often as possible.

The desserts, omg..! They were so good we could never decide which one to pick. After the first 2 nights the waiter just left one of each on the table and we shared every one. 😁

Remember when the waiter would approach your table with the dessert tray and announce “It’s showtime!” Dinner back then was an event to be savored.

Bo, I really think that you would appreciate the details ofservice that people here recall. I fully realize that times and tastes evolve and  things change, but even having never met you, I think you would have enjoyed the attention to detail that Celebrity regularly tried to achieve in years gone by. I also admit that if they continued on that path and tried to maintain that level of service at mainstream prices, they would no longer exsist. That, in a nutshell, is why they were acquired by Royal Caribbean back in the 90s. They could not sustain their business model.

Loved Showtime!  Loved that every time I asked someone for something on the Mercury, the response was, "It would be my pleasure."  I was hooked there and then.
