Just_a_cruiser Posted April 29, 2016 #3751 Share Posted April 29, 2016 I think the poll numbers are the result of non smokers being inside on their computers more to answer such a poll, while the smokers are outside smoking their little lungs away. i don't smoke but DH does and he's always outside away from the computer. I always thought the Celebrity ships were pretty but I guess i'll never find out. Right, that's the reason :D.

Cheryl and I don't always share the same interests or vacation goals (she's more land based), but we compromise. If you'd like to give Celebrity a try, pitch it to your husband - perhaps offering him something in return (somewhere he'd like to go or such) if that's necessary. Just a thought! :) Tom Edited April 29, 2016 by Tom-n-Cheryl
sammiedawg Posted April 29, 2016 #3753 Share Posted April 29, 2016 Most non smokers do not want to have to negotiate terms of usage of their balcony. Smokers lose their sense of smell and do not realize the stench left behind. Smokers and non smokers do not coexist in the same physical space, for this reason public smoking was outlawed in the US. The smoking ban is now being extended to the dwellings and public spaces of shared housing types. Right now condo and apartment complexes are banning smoking altogether. nb125 Posted April 29, 2016 #3754 Share Posted April 29, 2016 Today they have to have the highest ratio of smokers vs non-smokers on their ships. Is there any evidence of this? If it's true there is no wonder the tiny space round the Seaview Bar is overcrowded given that there is nowhere else to go.

peaches from georgia Posted April 29, 2016 #3756 Share Posted April 29, 2016 Most non smokers do not want to have to negotiate terms of usage of their balcony..............Non-smokers should consider themselves lucky to get to negotiate balcony smokin time and not complain about doing it. Smokers are under absolutely no obligation to negotiate anything. balconies are a HAL smoking area

Ummm - Smoking has not been outlawed in all public places in the US. Some cities, yes, but not all cities and towns across the country. You can even still smoke indoors in bars restaurants and casinos in some states.

I think that is way some get irritated more by smoke than some others. We live in San Diego -- we do not encounter any smoke in our daily lives. We have no friends or family that smoke. There is virtually no inside smoking allowed -- city parks and beaches are also smoke free. Those cities and states that are behind the times are just anachronisms, like HAL. An additional 6 have banned, except for adult only venues such as casinos and bars. Another 6 have bans with some unique exemptions. Only 10 states do not have general bans at this time

It seems to me that 20% of states, which is not an inconsiderable percentage, not having general bans certainly supports what Taters stated.... Rare albingirl Posted May 2, 2016 #3763 Share Posted May 2, 2016 Ok so I have NCL cruises booked, but I booked a HAL cruise yesterday. No balcony, thanks, smoking is bothersome, but I just could not stand the lack of ports on most cruises with most cruiselines. Just going to suck it up, do the M. Streep thing, and say I'm all in with you. :)

Rare albingirl Posted May 2, 2016 #3765 Share Posted May 2, 2016 Thank you v. much. I am expecting backlash since I really dislike the smoking thing on this line and stated that I was going to put my money into other cruiselines, but I guess I am only doing that to a certain extent. It's a hard call but we have been with HAL since forever and the love affair continues..... except for the smoking yuck factor.
SJSULIBRARIAN Posted May 2, 2016 #3766 Share Posted May 2, 2016 I really don't understand why you booked HAL if you are so anti HAL Makes no sense to me at all.

Rare albingirl Posted May 2, 2016 #3769 Share Posted May 2, 2016 Thanks for your kind wishes. To clarify, I've never been anti-Hal. I've spoken up about pricing and promos, that's for sure, and never liked the smoking policy, but we've sailed many times on Hal and have been happy overall. The good outweighs the bad. Nothing is ever perfect. They have the best itinerary of all the cruiselines I study within my price range. So, while I have other cruises chosen, as well, I still like Holland America.:)

I wish they would at least ban smoking on balconies as we always book one as I'm claustrophobic. We just feel at home on HAL. Hopefully one day their smoking policy will change. Rare Tom-n-Cheryl Posted May 20, 2016 #3772 Share Posted May 20, 2016 Good discussion regarding smoking policy on Carnival board It will never last. I've seen MANY on the Carnival board, and they all eventually get locked (permanently) or deleted. Tom

Aquahound Posted May 21, 2016 #3774 Share Posted May 21, 2016 So I assume there was no smoking on HAL when the love affair began:confused: Their love affair for HAL probably began before HAL was the go-to line for balcony smokers.
Host Walt Posted May 21, 2016 Author #3775 Share Posted May 21, 2016 So I assume there was no smoking on HAL when the love affair began:confused: Smoking has been permitted on HAL ships since they began sailing. The issue about balcony smoking, however, began in 1993 when HAL introduced ships with balconies (Verandas) when the Statendam (now P&O's Pacific Eden) was launched.
