MIAMI, Dec. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrity Cruises has taken a bold step in ship design with the signing of a letter of intent for a new class of vessels, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and French shipbuilder STX France announced today. The two 2,900-guest, 117,000-gross-registered-ton ships, developed under the project name EDGE will build upon the modern luxury experience of the brand's Millennium and Solstice class vessels. At 984 feet long, 123 feet wide and 190 feet high, Project EDGE will deliver small ship itineraries with large ship amenities, a perfect vacation experience in step with today's premium vacationer. "The addition of two project EDGE vessels to our fleet delivers on our long-term strategic plan of moderate capacity growth, and continues the positive momentum the Celebrity brand has achieved in the premium segment of our industry," said Richard D. Fain, chairman and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "Our new class of ship will set the standard for premium world travel and deliver the next generation of modern luxury experiences that our guests know and love," said Michael Bayley, president and chief executive officer of Celebrity Cruises. "STX France designs and builds some of the most innovative and stylish cruise ships in the world, and project EDGE offers them the opportunity to again set a new standard for modern iconic architecture. On this stunning new ship we will bring our guests even closer to the must-see destinations of the world, while indulging them onboard in the most luxurious accommodations, the finest culinary experiences, and the best hospitality delivered by our dedicated staff." "We are excited to be collaborating with Celebrity on this dramatic step forward in premium cruise ship design," said Laurent Castaing, managing director of STX France. "This class of ships will be designed to deliver the destination to vacationers who want to experience all the world has to offer." These vessels also represent a significant leap forward in environmentally friendly ship design, benefiting from new technologies to drive significant fuel efficiency and an ongoing process to ensure the extensive use of sustainable materials. The company expects delivery of the first ship in Fall 2018, with the second vessel delivered in the early part of 2020. The order is contingent upon the completion of customary conditions, including financing. Capacity increases for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 are expected to be 2.4%, 5.5%, 6.7%, 3.8% and 4.3%, respectively. These figures do not include potential ship sales or additions that the company may elect to make in the future. Celebrity Cruises is owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Orator Posted December 4, 2014 #14 Share Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) Guess my information about size was correct. Same shipyard that built Mein Schiff 3. was told the externally a new build might resemble Mein Schiff 3, but the internal configuration will be different according to the Same sources who told me about size. Mein Schiff 3 has been built by STX Turku in Finland, X Millennium has been built by STX France however. Wondering why the new ships are not built by Meyer Ship Yard who built Solstice Class and also RCL Quantum Class.

Rare ghstudio Posted December 4, 2014 #20 Share Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) I'm wondering how a 2900 passsenger, 117,000 gross ton ship is going to deliver small ship itineraries with large ship amenities. That's NOT a small ship that can sail into smaller harbors doing the type of itineraries that oceania and azamara can offer...in fact, the s-class ships are 122,000 tons and carry fewer passengers. I guess we'll have to see, but I suspect that these ships will try to offer about the same cruises that are being done on the m-class ships, if they can even get into some of those harbors. More likely, they will replace the m-class ships, but will still be limited to docking way out of some ports, due to size. On the surface, I welcome new ships, or course...but I think we are getting some marketing speak vs the reality of where that size ship can dock and it's potential itineraries. Heck, based on size, the current s-class ships can offer "small ship itineraries" so not much change expected on that front.... I am being positive....I really do look forward to the new ships and hopefully, they will offer new ports and routes.....I just have a mental problem with a solstice size ship delivering small ship itineraries. I visited vietnam on celebrity and we had to dock hours from the cities (on m-class ship)...the azamara size ships got much much closer.....that's what I think of when I think small ship itineraries. fortinweb Posted December 4, 2014 #25 Share Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) Celebrity is determined to reduce operational and maintenance costs on these new ships. To reduce these costs, and to improve fuel efficiency, the new design will indeed be "iconic", with a more streamlined appearance. Here is an artist's rendering of the first ship: Edited December 4, 2014 by fortinweb
